Position Description – Vice President
The Vice President is a volunteer staff position, whose primary purposes are to:

Support the President and fill the role of President in the event that s/he is unable
General qualifications:
NOTE: The position of Vice President may be held by a qualified member of the Board of Directors, but the Vice
President is not required to be a Director










Minimum age of eighteen (18) years old
Current residency in one or more community of Southeast Alaska, with preference for understanding and/or
personal experience of underserved communities
An understanding of and passion for animal welfare issues, especially those affecting the communities of
Southeast Alaska, with a preference for experience-based knowledge
A commitment to improving the lives of both domestic animals and animal owners in the communities of
Southeast Alaska
Leadership experience and accomplishments in business, government, or the nonprofit sector
Honesty and personal integrity
Sensitivity to and tolerance of different views, methods, and lifestyles; a friendly, responsive, and patient
approach to others; and ability to build consensus among diverse individuals
Ability to listen, analyze, and think creatively
Willingness to volunteer sufficient time and resources to help achieve the mission of SOFA
Proficiency and access to common communication technology such as: telephone, internet, email, Facebook and
other applications
Special qualifications:



In-depth knowledge of animal welfare issues and domestic animal care
Knowledge and understanding of animal care and control ordinances for communities throughout Southeast
Alaska region and Alaska state statutes and regulations related to animal care
Experience managing multiple employees or volunteers to accomplish group goals
Duties and Expectations:







Be familiar with SOFA’s Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, missions, values, goals, policies, and the directions of
the Board of Directors, as well as the local and state laws related to animal welfare, care, and control
Support and assist the President in day-to-day duties
Perform all of the duties of the President if s/he is unable
Volunteer sufficient time and resources to help achieve the mission of SOFA
Attend all regular board meetings via phone, skype, or other means as required (currently scheduled on the 3rd
Saturday of every month at 3pm) as well as committee meetings and other important meetings or functions
Be a primary SOFA representative at public functions, fundraisers, events, etc. when the President is unavailable
Cultivate relationships with other board members and volunteers

Represent SOFA as an ambassador by being able to clearly define and articulate SOFA’s mission,
accomplishments, and goals, in order to gain community support and increase public awareness
Term of Office:


The Vice President is elected by the Board of Directors at the regular board meeting in January of each year, or
during any other regular meeting, when necessary to fill a vacant seat. The Vice President serves from the time
that they are elected until the following January meeting, unless they resign or are removed by a vote of the
Board of Directors in accordance with the bylaws.
The position of Vice President is not a paid position.
