Let us pray. The Collect for This Day Written by Marty Steyer We have no power to preserve ourselves. We and our works decay—dust on dusty shelves. Keep us intact, God, in body and soul; outwardly and inwardly, make us whole. Amen. WE TELL THE STORY All are now SEATED for the first reading. First Reading Exodus 17:1-7 From the wilderness of Sin the whole congregation of the Israelites journeyed by stages, as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarreled with Moses, and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?" But the people thirsted there for water; and the people complained against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and livestock with thirst?" So Moses cried out to the Lord, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me." The Lord said to Moses, "Go on ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink." Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. He called the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled and tested the Lord, saying, "Is the Lord among us or not?" After the reading, the Reader will say Reader The Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. The Third Sunday in Lent Page 4 March 19, 2017 Psalm 95:1-8 We STAND and say the Psalm responsively. Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice! Harden not your hearts, as your forebears did in the wilderness, at Meribah, and on that day at Massah, when they tempted me. The Third Sunday in Lent Page 5 March 19, 2017 All are now SEATED for the second reading. Second Reading Romans 5:1-11 Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person-- though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. After the reading, the Reader will say Reader The Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God. The Third Sunday in Lent Page 6 March 19, 2017 Please STAND as we sing Gospel Song | Thank You for Loving Me By Sinead O’Connor The Presider then introduces the Gospel by saying People The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you Lord Christ. The Gospel John 4:1-30,39 Jesus came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.” (Continued on next page) The Third Sunday in Lent Page 7 March 19, 2017 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking to you.” Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?” Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he?” They left the city and were on their way to him. Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” After the Gospel the Presider will say People The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Homily The Third Sunday in Lent Page 8 March 19, 2017 OUR AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We STAND and say together these ancient and new words. We believe in God above us, maker and sustainer of all life, of sun and moon, of water and earth, of male and female. We believe in God beside us, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, Born of a woman’s womb, servant of the poor. He was tortured and nailed to a tree. Knowing full passion and deep sorrow, he died forsaken. He descended into the earth to the place of death. On the third day he rose from the tomb. He ascended into heaven to be everywhere present. And his Kingdom will one day be known. We believe in God within us, The Holy Spirit of pentecostal fire, Life-Giving breath of the Church, She is the Spirit of healing and forgiveness, Source of resurrection and of life everlasting. Amen. We confess that we have disobeyed your word, denying your providence and care and relying on our own cleverness. Have mercy on us, we pray: cover us with your grace, feed us with the bread of life, and re-create us in your image; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In turn, around the circle we say for and with each other, You are forgiven, be at peace. This can be accompanied by any gesture of compassion and welcome. God, the source of all good things, has given to us all that we need. In joyful response, we offer our gifts, the fruit of our labors. The Third Sunday in Lent Page 12 March 19, 2017 THE CELEBRATION OF OUR SACRED MEAL Now seeing how greatly God loves us, let’s share freely of the good things we’ve received. You are invited to offer your gifts of money for the work of the church. If this is your first time here, you can wait. Instead, notice your blessings and make a thanksgiving gift when you return. Presider People Presider People Presider People Presider The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life. And so this day we join in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to you as we sing: Sanctus by Bernadette Farrell The Third Sunday in Lent Page 13 March 19, 2017 Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again he gave thanks to you, gave it to them and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is the cup of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of Jesus. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ's Body in the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in unity of the Holy Spirit to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. Amen. The Third Sunday in Lent Page 14 March 19, 2017 And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray People and Presider Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Presider breaks the consecrated Bread and a period of silence is kept. The Breaking of the Bread We are now invited to share the gifts of communion. Then the Presider says Presider People By eating this bread and drinking this wine we become one in hope. The Third Sunday in Lent Page 15 March 19, 2017 Music During Communion | I Shall Not Walk Alone By Ben Harper Battered and torn still I can see the light tattered and worn but I must kneel to fight Friend of mine what can't you spare I know some times it gets cold in there When my legs no longer carry and the warm wind chills my bones I reach for Mother Mary and I shall not walk alone Hope is alive while we're apart only tears speak from my heart break the chains that hold us down and we shall be forever bound When I'm tired and weary and a long way from home I reach for Mother Mary and I shall not walk alone I shall not walk alone Beauty that we left behind how shall we tomorrow find Set aside our weight in sin so that we can live again When my legs no longer carry and the warm wind chills my bones I reach for Mother Mary and I shall not walk alone I shall not walk alone Following communion we are invited to share the sounds of silence with one another. The quiet will last a few minutes–and will begin and end with a bell. For all of us, young and otherwise, these simple moments of stillness are offered as a chance to find ourselves held in the timeless presence of God. The Third Sunday in Lent Page 16 March 19, 2017 We stay SEATED and sing together. Hymn after Communion | Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking for I have climbed the highest mountains, I have run through the fields Only to be with you, only to be with you I have run, I have crawled I have scaled these city walls, these city walls, only to be with you. But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for I have served, I have tried, I have listened to so many lives Calling your name, singing your name I have spoken with the tongue of angels, I have held the hand of the devil It was warm in the night, I was cold as a stone But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for I believe in the Kingdom come, then all the colors will bleed into one, bleed into one. Yes, I’m still running You broke the bonds, you loosed the chains Carried the cross of our shame, of our shame You know I believe it But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for Words and Music by U2 The Third Sunday in Lent Page 17 March 19, 2017 GOING OUT INTO GOD’S WORLD Our Prayer after Communion After the hymn we STAND and say together Eternal God, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
