Nitrogen Cycle
Bacteria do it all (lightning helps a little)
Nitrogen Fixation: conversion of nitrogen gas (N2(g)) to a useable
dissolved form. Done by nitrogen fixing bacteria and happens in root
nodules of legumes. show powerpoint now
Denitrification: nitrates in soil are converted back by denitrifying
bacteria to atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2(g))
Nitrification: interconversion between nitrates (NO3-(aq)) and nitrites
(NO2-(aq)) by nitrifying bacteria. Ammonium ions (NH4+(aq)) may also
be a starting point.
Ammonification: conversion of nitrogen in dead stuff or from
atmospheric form (N2(g)) to ammonia (NH4+(aq)). Done by ammonifying
bacteria and nitrogen fixing bacteria in soil.
