Fall/Winter Issue | November 2014 A Place to Call Home and love prepared meals. Home is where memories are made and shared. When you are home, you have help with homework, advice for life and laughter with your family. We learn to work, love and forgive inside the blessed shelter of home. Hearts and secrets are both safe at home. It is where you learn what life is really all about and where those who love you point to the One who gave us the path to life abundantly. What a privilege belongs to our staff! Our staff at Calvary has the rare privilege of being family to precious children to whom they are not biologically related. Aunt and Uncle are the titles used here by those whose hearts God has touched to raise children for His sake. These titles point to our desire to live like family . . . and families need a home. The very purpose of our ministry is to be a home to children whose parents are not able to care for them. At home, you find a warm bed, safe nights Home is also where you are “cheered for” as you walk this life. Three of our young men play football for Grace Christian Academy. One of them has been a dominant player, and throughout the games, he scans the fan base for his House Parent’s affirmation. Occasionally, after hearing his name over the PA system, he has actually waved at our staff from the field. This is a big boy loving his family’s encouragement . . . sure sounds like home to me. We first experience trust and grace inside the sacred walls of home, and our wins are trumpeted and our losses forgotten just inside the gates of home. Your support gives our children the special gift of a home . . . and we thank you so much. Home should be a retreat to which a son or daughter can return in triumph or defeat, in victory or disgrace, and know they will be loved. -- Author Unknown Snyder Turner Executive Director Calvary Children’s Home 1430 Lost Mountain Road Powder Springs, GA 30127 770.794.1500 Office 770.794.1777 Fax www.calvarykids.org Sherry Croft Program Director Committed to Making a Difference! We want to always inspire our children to greatness and to keep in mind that hearts can mend within a caring, home-like environment. The growing availability and added convenience of online purchasing, provides another method for our friends to support Calvary Children’s Home while making online purchases at Amazon. Since we receive no federal, state or local funding, this will also help support our work at Calvary Children’s Home for children who have been separated from their families through no fault of their own. AmazonSmile is a program where Amazon donates 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to charitable organizations when you shop at smile.amazon.com. This link will allow you to select and support Calvary Children’s Home. Since there are other charities with similar names, please make certain you select Calvary Children’s Home in Powder Springs, Georgia. There is also an extension available to your Chrome browser which will automatically select Calvary Children’s Home after the initial sign in. From a former resident . . . We received the following letter from Jessica King who was a member of our Calvary family for ten years. After graduation, Jessica became an Au Pair for a special needs child with a family living in the Chicago area. The following is used by permission. “Growing up was not easy for me. I was given up by my biological family and put in foster care where I suffered a lot of abuse. When I was adopted, I thought I finally had a family to love and care for me. I would soon find out that my adopted family would abuse and abandon me as well. When I came to Calvary Children’s Home, I was a damaged little girl who was mad at the world for the suffering that I had gone through and feared what I would still go through. I fought everybody, and I did not trust anyone. Above all, I refused to get close to anyone for fear of being abandoned again. damaged little girl and began to grow into a strong and good woman. I worked hard, wanting to be the person God wants me to be, and finally became someone that not only God could be proud of, but that I could be proud of also. It wasn’t easy to say the least. So often you find yourself fighting for the wrong thing, but God was on my side and the Children’s Home was there for me every step of the way. It was a long time before my pain began to heal. It wasn’t until I accepted the Lord (when I was 14 years old) that I began my long trip to forgiveness. It was hard to face those who had hurt me and to forgive them. But when I did, I finally began to heal. (Living is easy, but letting go is hard.) I am still growing in my walk with God and every day I grow closer to Him. Someday I hope to have a degree in Early Child Development. For now, God has truly blessed me with a wonderful job with an amazing family. I am the caregiver for their special needs daughter, whom I absolutely love! Someday I hope to have my very own family, with beautiful children of my own to love.” As time passed and I grew in my walk with God, I stopped being a Memorial and Honor Gifts TRIBUTE GIFTS June 2014 – October 2014 If you would like to make a donation to this program, please complete the form on the envelope and make check payable to Calvary Children’s Home or you may make a donation online at www.calvarykids.org.
