Times table challenge
Dear Parents/carers,
Times tables are an area of learning that many children find challenging. By the end of Key Stage
2, we expect that all children should know their times tables up to 12 x 12. To help the children
learn and to generate some additional incentive we have introduced a system that will help.
The system has four different levels to work through and achieve. At least once a fortnight,
the children will be tested on the times table level that is appropriate to them. If they achieve all
of their times tables correctly for a particular level twice, they then have to complete a speed
test assessment. This involves a mixture of the questions for their level which they have to
complete in 2- 3 minutes.
The system starts with a ‘Bronze Buddies’ level. This involves making sure the children know
their 0, 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The second level is the ‘Silver Squad’ which involves making
sure children know their 3, 4, 9 and 11 times tables. The third level is the ‘Gold Gang’ which
involves making sure the children know their 6, 7, 8 and 12 times table. The final level is the
‘Platinum Posse’ this involves testing the children on all of these times table facts, division facts
as well as square and triangular numbers. Once the children are secure on all these areas they
will join the ‘100 club’ where they are timed on rapid recall of 100 times tables.
If the children pass their assessment sheet they are presented a certificate.
We hope this pack of information is useful, but please come and speak to us if you have any
questions or queries.
