The Story: “A Woman Anoints Jesus for Burial”
Every year the people of God would go to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of the
Passover, to remember how God had saved his people from slavery in Egypt. Jesus and
his friends, the disciples, also went to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. But this year,
there were priests and religious leaders who did not like Jesus. They wanted to find a way
to arrest Jesus and even have him killed.
It was two days before the feast of Passover. Jesus was outside of the city of
Jerusalem in Bethany, at Simon the leper’s house. Suddenly a woman came in with a very
expensive bottle of sweet-smelling perfume. She opened the bottle and poured all the
perfume on the head of Jesus.
Some of the people who were watching this happen got upset and angry. “Why did
she waste this perfume? We could have sold this perfume for more than three hundred
silver coins. We could have given this money to the poor! Why Jesus, did you let her
waste all this money?”
But Jesus turned to all who were grumbling and complaining and said another
amazing thing. “Leave this woman alone! She has done a beautiful thing for me. You
will always have poor people with you and you can always give to them. But you won’t
always have me here with you. She has done a beautiful thing to me. She has anointed
my body before I die. She has prepared my body for burial!”
Then Jesus looked at the woman and said, “Wherever God’s story is told around the
whole world, people will remember what she has done for me. And they will tell others.”
Jesus’ words are true. Even today, two thousand years later we remember this
woman and the gift of love which she gave to Jesus.
The Scripture:
Mark 14: 3-9; Matthew 26: 6-13
Wondering Questions:
- I wonder why the woman poured all her perfume on Jesus?...
- I wonder why some of the people were upset with the woman for
using all the perfume on Jesus?...
- I wonder why Jesus told these people “Leave this woman alone. She
has done a beautiful thing to me”?...
- I wonder what this woman teaches us during this Lenten season?...
Lent – Sharing the Faith in Your Family:
Today is the third Sunday in Lent. Lent is the season that the Church prepares
for the suffering and death of Jesus and the marvelous celebration of Jesus’
resurrection on Easter. In the Worship Centers we learn that purple is the color of
waiting and preparation… the seasons of Advent and Lent are both “dressed” in
purple. Are there ways that your family wants to “dress your home” in purple to
celebrate the Lenten season? Are there special activities that you can do as a family to
remember this special season?
Worship Center Training
Parents, have you ever considered leading the children in worship on a Sunday
morning? Have you ever wondered if you might enjoy being a worship center leader?
We are now looking for adults who would enjoy leading children in their worship
experience. A training event for the Young Children and Worship program is being
held at our Church on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20. Gretchen Munroe, one of our
Worship Leaders, will be the trainer. If you have any questions about this program or
the training event, please contact Joyce Fry or Gretchen.

our love in extravagant ways. Help us to give our entire lives to you

first loved us! In the name of Jesus, we pray, Amen.
