Glossary
Candidate. Candidate institutions have demonstrated compliance with Core Requirements 2.1-2.11, three
Comprehensive Standards (3.3.1, 3.5.1, and 3.7.1), and the Federal Requirements. Candidate institutions move into
membership after demonstrating compliance with the remaining Comprehensive Standards.
Commission on Colleges. The Commission on Colleges is the regional accrediting body for the eleven southeastern
states. Its seventy seven Commissioners, elected by the chief executive officers of the member institutions, implement the
accreditation process.
Degrees. The following codes identify the types of degrees offered by member institutions:
A Associate
B Baccalaureate
M Master
ES Educational Specialist
D Doctorate
Initial Accreditation (Init. Accr.). In this year, the institution became a member of the Commission on Colleges.
Last Reaffirmation (Last Reaf.). In this year, the most recent review of the institution’s compliance with the
Commission’s standards was acted upon by the Commission on Colleges.

Level. Classified according to the highest degree offered, member institutions are placed into one of the following six
categories:

Member. Through regularly-scheduled reviews, member institutions demonstrate on-going compliance with the
Commission’s standards.
Next Reaffirmation (Next Reaf.). In this year, the Commission on Colleges will act on the results of the next
comprehensive review of the institution’s compliance with the Commission’s standards.
Public Sanction. When an institution fails to document compliance with a Core Requirement, the Commission places the
institution on one of two sanctions, Warning, the lesser of the two, or Probation. These sanctions alert the public to the
Commission’s identification of serious issues of non-compliance that could result in loss of membership if not corrected.
Sanctions may also be imposed on institutions that fail to document sufficient progress towards achieving compliance with
Comprehensive Standards or Federal Requirements.
Type of Institution. Classified by type of governance, member institutions are identified as either Public or Private.
Private institutions are further classified as Not-for-Profit and For-Profit.
