No. However, it is advisable to take LRSK62ABCD to determine your readiness to take the test and pass it. It will help you to brush up on areas that need improvement so you do not waste time and money retaking portions of the tests. When are the classes offered? MonMon-Thu 8:00A8:00A-12:00P (English) MonMon-Thu 6:006:00-9:00P (Spanish) Tue & Thu 6:006:00-9:00P (English) 1 Am I eligible to take the GED? Must have some sort of documentation: drivers license, identification card, passport and/or student ID. Must be 18 years of age or older or within 60 days of your 18th birthday (regardless of school enrollment status). Must I be a resident of California to take the test? No. All you need is an identification card. Is there a minimum age requirement? Yes. The minimum age is 18 except in the following cases: z z z The individual is 17 years old, has been out of school for at least 60 consecutive school days and provides a letter of request from the military, a post secondary educational institution or a prospective employer. The individual is 17 years of age and is incarcerated in a California State county correctional facility*. Resides in the school district, is at least 16 years old, submits a parent signed permission form to the board of trustees, has not graduated high school, is not currently enrolled in high school and has satisfied any other requirements prescribed by the board of trustees. * For more information regarding eligibility requirements go to http://www.cde.ca.gov http://www.cde.ca.gov// May I take the GED exam if I have a high school diploma from another country? Yes. Persons whose diploma is from an unaccredited high school are eligible to take the GED test if they meet the eligibility requirements. 2 What will be required of me? We recommend that you purchase Complete GED Preparation (SteckSteckVaughn) for your own personal and supplemental use. However, all inin-class material will be provided for you. How will I know if the GED prep class is right for me? A strong desire to pass the GED exam in as short a time as possible. Commitment to making that happen. Room in your schedule to attend class regularly and complete preparation assignments. When can I schedule the GED exam? As soon as you feel ready. During Testing months*: February, April, June, August, October, December You must sign up with the counseling office at least two weeks prior to the first day of testing. *More detailed information regarding date and time will be provided on a separate form. 3 May I take the GED exam if I am not a U.S. Citizen? Yes. As long as the individual possess verification of identity and eligibility for testing. Is there a Spanish version of the test? Yes. The Spanish preparation class is taught in the evenings from 6:006:00-9:00 MM-Th. Th. Drivers license, valid passport, military ID, and governmentgovernment-issued identification. Are there other versions of the test available? Yes. There are seven versions of the GED test (English, Spanish, French, Canadian, audio, large print and Braille). Since not all sites will have all the versions, students seeking accommodations in the following areas will need special permission and advance notification: Do I need a Social Security Number to take the test? Yes. The counseling center requires that you register at least two weeks prior to the first day of testing. What if I move? Where is the test administered? Old Board Room Diagonal from SSS z Modular building z currently used as TIL classroom If you move before completing all of the GED, you can finish the test anywhere the tests is administered in the United States or overseas. You will have to inform your new testing center and they will contact the State of California GED office to obtain your previous scores. What do/don’ do/don’t I need to bring? z Do bring a valid picture ID and receipt. Don’ Don’t bring companions and/or children. Do turn off all cell phones and pagers. Don’ Don’t bring food/drinks. 6 How is the test scored? Students must score a minimum of 410 (52%) on each test. The combined score must add up to 2225 (or an average of 450 points). Students must receive a 1.5 or better on the essay portion. Do I have to take the entire test over if I miss one part? No. You only have to retake the sections of the test with scores below 410 (52%) on the GED subtests and 1.5 on the essay portion. You have to earn an average standard score of 450 or higher. What happens if I don’ don’t pass the GED exam? You have three chances within each year to pass the exam. You will not be required to retake any section you have passed. You are welcome to return to class to focus on the areas that need improvement. When will I hear my results? Approximately two weeks. The California Department of Education will mail them to you. All results are CONFIDENTIAL. You can indicate whether or not you would like the results disclosed to the instructor. This will help us help you prepare for areas that need some improvement (if any). 7 May I continue with the class as long as I need to prepare for the GED exam? Yes. You can continue to register for this class under section 62B, 62C, or 62D. Remember: You will need to rereregister each semester and pay tuition.
