Namibia Trek Itinerary In the Nama language Namibia means “vast”. Situated to the north of South Africa and straddling the west coast of the continent, this country lives up to its name. From its parched desert (the world’s oldest), with some of the highest sand dunes in the world, to the fascinating geology and dramatic landscapes of the Brandberg, this trek takes us through a land of extremes. Wildlife has adapted well to the harsh and inhospitable conditions, and Namibia is home to the largest free roaming population of black rhinos in the world, the desert elephant and numerous other species. Our experience here should combine the physical challenge with a great cultural experience; we learn the Nama language, cook with our bush guide, listen to local music and learn how the local guides live. DAY 1 DEPARTURE 4th November 2017 DAY 2 ARRIVE WINDHOEK We arrive in Windhoek where we are met by our guides and transfer by road to our Hotel in Omaruru. Here we have a welcome dinner to mark the start of an incredible week and a full briefing on the challenge ahead. DAY 3 UGAB RIVER 15KM TREKKING After an early breakfast we transfer 160km northwest to our bush camp on the banks of the Ugab River. Here we trek with our local Damara guides into the Brandburg Nature Reserve, where we are greeted by the awesome sight of the tallest mountain in Namibia, rising 2573m out of the surrounding arid land. The mighty Brandberg is also known as “Fire Mountain” due to the captivating red glow that smothers its west face as the sun sets over the desert. Our route takes us from the Upper reaches of the Ugab River along its dried river bed and eventually into our camp. This camp just below the Brandberg massif is the first of our trekking camps and should be a great experience. DAY 4 BRANDBERG 16KM TREKKING This morning we walk from the camp into the Tsisab gorge on the northern side of the massif where we trek to see the famous “White Lady” Bushman painting which is approx. 16km. We then continue through the ravine to view more spectacular rock paintings before returning for lunch just below the caves. From here we return to our camp for our second night in this incredible wild camp setting. DAY 5 SPITZKOP 13KM TREKKING This morning we start with a 100km transfer to Spitzkop which is probably the most iconic rock formation in Namibia. When we get in to the national park we start immediately on our trek from camp which is a circular route that takes us over the steep slopes and into the heart of the mountain where we see bushman paintings. We will probably have lunch here before we head over our highest point and down onto the plains the other side, a trail that eventually brings us back to camp. Tonight we watch as the sun sets, lighting up the side of this beautiful mountain and we relax with a cool beer under millions of stars with a great plate of camp food. DAY 6 ERONGO MOUNTAINS 16KM TREKKING The day starts with breakfast in the chilly air as the sun rises onto the amazing Spitzkop and the surrounding peaks. We break camp and make our way to Ameib private farm and game reserve where we set up camp in this well establish site with great facilities. Here we have an early lunch before heading off for the afternoon through the Erongo Mountains, a trek that will take us to the huge granite boulders of Bulls Party and onto Elephants Head one of the most incredible places of our trip. Later this afternoon once back in camp we can relax with the luxury of a swimming pool set in a truly incredible setting. DAY 7 WINDHOEK 10-14KM TREKKING For our final trekking day today we move to the northwest hills overlooking the city to trek through the local communities. This is a different world from our wilderness treks, giving us an insight into the lives of the ordinary Namibian, with a visit to one of the local schools and charity projects. This evening we make our way into town for our celebratory evening to mark the end of an incredible challenge.
