Important ERROR COINS March 2013 Only TEN examples known! One of Australia’s rarest circulating coins… A mong Australia’s most important, most celebrated and most fascinating rarities, it is with great delight that Downies can present the 1916I Halfpenny Mule. A rarity of world standing, the coin before you is one of only TEN known examples! First discovered in 1965, and seldom seen on the market, the 1916I Halfpenny Mule is shrouded in mystery. The production of Australian copper coins was transferred from Britain to India during World War I, in a bid to allay concerns about Germany’s navy intercepting coinage shipments, and from 1916 to 1918, Australian halfpennies were struck at the Calcutta branch of the Royal Mint. Created by the accidental combination of a traditional Australian halfpenny reverse die with an obverse die for India’s similarly sized copper Quarter Anna, the presumption is that the 1916I Halfpenny Mule was struck at the Calcutta Mint. Whilst the creation of this coin may be steeped in mystery, there is no mystery about its extreme rarity. Instantly recognisable due to the English obverse inscription, rather than the Latin legend found on Australian coins, as well as the presence of an elephant motif upon the chain hanging around the King’s neck, the 1916I Halfpenny Mule is known by no more than ten examples. There is no doubt that it is one of the rarest circulating coinage types in Australian history. Distinguished by the obverse legend, which is rendered in English rather than Latin, as well as the elephant motif upon the portrait of George V, the 1916I Halfpenny Mule was created through the accidental matching of an India Quarter Anna obverse die with an Australian Halfpenny reverse die As illustrated by iconic coins such as the 1922/21 3d Overdate and the 1930 Penny, condition is largely irrelevant where extreme rarity is apparent. The 1916I Halfpenny Mule is another excellent casein-point. Despite the fact that it is not known in anything better than Very Fine, this high-profile rarity has soared in catalogue value since discovered in 1965 in the lead-up to decimalisation. Graded at about Fine, we naturally have only the single example of this celebrated rarity in stock, and it is sure to be snapped up instantaneously. The first time in more than 15 years that we have offered this exceptionally important, excessively rare Australian coin, how many years will you have to wait before the opportunity to secure the 1916I Halfpenny Mule emerges again?
