Ms. Ellen Harris, AICP, LEED, AP Director of Urban Planning & Historic Preservation Chatham County Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission Attention: Sites & Monuments Committee 110 East State Street Savannah, GA 31401 Dear Ms. Harris and Members of the Committee: After much concern and consideration over the assigned and approved site for the monument to the Sisters of Mercy, our committee has decided to ask for an approval of a change of location. As it stands now, the monument has been approved to be placed in the tree lawn on the south side of Liberty Street. It was approved to be in the first section of the tree lawn on the southeast corner of Liberty and Abercorn Streets. Our problem with that location is our fear of the possibility of traffic accident badly damaging the monument. To avoid the probability of this happening, we propose the bronze statue be placed behind our fence on that corner. Not only will the wall add protection to this statue, our insurance will cover any damage since it is on our property. The level of the ground behind the fence is 2 feet higher than the tree lawn, giving us added height. The base of the statue would be 3 feet above the ground rather than the former proposal of 2 feet above the ground so that the figures of Catherine McAuley and the student would be looking over our wrought iron fence and the bodies of the figures will be clearly visible through the fence. Attached is our site plans showing our change of location. The measurements are the same with the tallest figure being 5 foot 8 inches tall and the width of the statue is 40”. The following are details for the granite base of the statue:  44” high  35” from front to back at bottom  27 and ½” from front to back at top  34” on bottom…side to side  29” on top… side to side The wall itself measures 3 feet (stucco over brick) on the bottom and 3 feet on the top. The top
of the fence is wrought iron and, we feel, will provide good visibility for the statue.
As you can see, the size of the monument remains the same with the only change being the size
of the base and, of course, the location.
We sincerely hope that you will find this location to be as agreeable, or perhaps, more agreeable
than the original.
I remain grateful for your consideration,
