What are lighthouses for?
Look at the pictures. Now read the sentences. Which picture goes with
which sentence? Use the space beside the pictures to copy the words.
1. Ships come to harbours in our country bringing many types of goods, such as food, that
are produced in other countries.
2.A lighthouse keeps ships and boats safe by showing them where land is.
3.Lighthouses are built on rocky cliffs, sandy shores, out at sea and at the entrances to
harbours and bays.
4.The lamp and lens are kept in the lantern room at the top of the lighthouse tower.
5.A lightvessel is a ship that is fixed to the seabed by a chain. It marks dangers that lie
just below the surface of the sea which ships can’t see.
6.Buoys come in many shapes and sizes. They float on the sea and are attached to the
seabed. They mark a safe route to harbour.
