Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #1: June 27-July 1 Theme: Art & Literature Project name: Onomatopoeia words Supplies needed: Book pages, white paper, markers, construction paper, letter stencils, glue Description: Campers will look at some comic book excerpts and discuss what onomatopoeia is (the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named). We will discuss how it is used in literary works, particularly in comic books. The campers will then choose a word (like boom, splat, etc.) and begin to draw their word art. We will be trying to draw them to illustrate the idea of the word (see above examples). They will draw the word on plain white paper and color it in with markers. When they have finished, they will choose a color to draw a cloud shape on. They will then use book page scraps to collage their thought bubble. They will then paste their word onto the bubble. Campers who finish early may draw their own comic strip. (template below) Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #2: July 4 -July 8 Theme: Art & Music Project name: Tangled Music Notes Supplies needed: Paper, pencil, Black sharpie, colored pencils Description: Teacher will show examples of different music notes. The teacher and campers will discuss patterns, and what makes them successful or unsuccessful. The campers will then draw a large treble clef and fill it with different patterns. They may choose to do only the treble clef or collage a few notes in as well. They may also choose to doodle outside of the note. Campers who finish may add colors (one per pattern) or choose to leave it black and white. They can create more music note tangles, or instead draw a musical instrument tangle if they complete the project and wish to continue. Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #3:July 11th - July 15th Theme: 3D Art Project name: 3D Op Art Hands Supplies needed: Paper, Pencils, Markers, Colored Pencils Description: Campers will begin by tracing their hands onto a piece of paper with pencil. The teacher will demo how to create the optical illusion, making the hands appear to be 3D, by drawing lines. They will then create a pattern using colors, and fill the page with that pattern/colors. Campers who finish early can create a 3-D foot drawing as well, or they may create an optical illusion using lined paper. Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #4:July 18th - July 22nd Theme: Art & Nature Project name: Chalk Pastel Flowers Supplies needed: Black paper, Elmers Glue, Chalk Pastels, Pencils Description: Campers will begin by drawing their flowers with pencil onto black paper. Once they are satisfied with their drawings, they will go over the pencil with white elmers glue. Once the glue has dried, they will add color using chalk pastels and smudging with their fingers (finished example on the left). If they finish and would like to keep trying, they can create more flowers or a simple landscape using the same method. Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #5:July 25th - July 29th Theme: Art & Film Project name: Movie Theater Drawing Supplies needed: Construction Paper, Sharpies, Glue, White Charcoal Description: Campers will begin by discussing space, specifically foreground, middle ground and background. I will show them examples where objects in the background are smaller; objects in the foreground have more detail, etc. They will then create their first two rows of the audience. The first row should have more detail, the second has less, the 3rd and 4th will be shapes without detail. We will then construct our rows using glue, with a black background. They will then draw the “projector” and use the white charcoal to show the projection. Campers who finish early can draw the screen, which would be a scene from the movie their audience is watching. Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #6: August 1st - August 5th Theme: Art Ages Project name: Pointillism Landscapes Supplies needed: Paper, Pencils, Markers Description: Campers will look at famous works created using pointillism (Georges Seurat). The teacher will demonstrate how to stipple using markers, and how to show space/value with the intensity of the dots (more/less dense). They will then lightly draw a landscape using pencil. They will then use colored markers and the pointillism method (only dots!) to add color and dimension to their work. Campers who finish early may also do a small still life using the same method. Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #7: August 8th - August 12th Theme: Art & Architecture Project name: Retro Skyscrapers Supplies needed: Paper, Pencils, Rulers, Sharpies, Scissors, Glue Description: We will begin by looking at pictures of skyscrapers and discussing architecture and building design. Campers will draw first on one side of a colored piece of paper. They will use pencil first, and then trace over with sharpies. On a separate white paper, they will design one single skyscraper. This will then be cut out and glued onto the other side of the colored paper, creating a nice contrast to the colored page. Students who finish early may design a cityscape, using their new knowledge of skyscrapers to help them! They may also use paint swatches to create another couple of skyscrapers. Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #8: August 15th - August 19th Theme: Art & Psychology Project name: Melted Crayon Scream Portrait Supplies needed: Paper, Pencils, Markers, Colored Pencils, Crayons, Blowdryer, Hot glue gun Description: Campers will view “The Scream” by Edvard Munch. They will be drawing a screaming face. It can be a self-portrait, but it doesn’t have to be. They will then arrange crayon chunks around the “scalp” of their face. The teacher will hot glue the crayon chunks into place. They will then get to use the blowdryer to melt the crayon wax out to create the hair. Teacher will demo how to use the blowdryer, and carefully supervise/assist with those who need it. Children who finish early can make their name or a shape using melted crayons. Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #9: August 22nd - August 26th Theme: Art & Movement Project name: 2 Faced Drawings Supplies needed: Paper, Pencils, Markers, Colored Pencils, glue Description: Campers will draw two portraits – one “normal” or “realistic,” and another that is unrealistic. These should also try to convey two different emotions (one happy, one sad, etc.). When they have completed both drawings, they will be sliced vertically and assembled as pictured above. They will then be folded as zigzags or accordions. Then, depending on how you hold it (or move it!), they will have both drawings visible or be able to view one at a time from the side. Campers who finish early can do another zig-zag drawing, but this time with a landscape! They should show two different types of weather (like sunny and rainy). Camp (CAC, Science, TA, EB, TT): CAC Week #10 : August 29th - September 2nd Theme: Art & You Project name: Cubism Self Portraits Supplies needed: Colored Construction paper, Pencils, Oil Pastels, Scissors, Glue Description: Campers will begin by viewing picasso portraits (links at bottom). Then I will demonstrate drawing different features in a picasso-y way. To practice, we will play “roll-a-picasso” where the campers roll dice to decide on each feature. Then they will select their paper scraps, and start to draw features separately on each one .They will draw using oil pastels. Once they have their features and basic head drawn on a large paper, they will glue them together. They may then finish coloring the entire paper. Once finished, they may create another one using the “roll-a-picasso” method! http://www.pablopicasso.org/girl-before-mirror.jsp http://www.pablopicasso.org/seated-woman.jsp http://www.pablopicasso.org/the-weeping-woman.jsp http://www.pablopicasso.org/dora-maar-au-chat.jsp
