Sticking to the Optus RockCorps mantra of ‘Give and Get Given’ volunteers received in return for volunteering a ticket to a money can’t buy concert at Luna Park Sydney, this year featuring Samantha Jade, Empire of the Sun and Rudimental. Bright eyed and keen to get started our volunteers showed up at 10am ready to get their hands dirty and work hard for their tickets, which they most certainly did, with shovels hitting the dirt for hours on end. Volunteers split into four groups each with their own area to focus on including the front garden, the entrance to the office, a side garden and one group getting hands on plant growing experience through propagation and weeding. In a ‘blink and you will miss it moment’, the gardens were suddenly transformed—a complete makeover. What was over grown and full of weeds was suddenly bright and colourful with freshly laid plants. The Optus RockCorps program encourages people to give volunteering a try in the hope that they will enjoy it and volunteer with not-for-profits on an ongoing basis. This paid off for Ability Options who has since had an eager volunteer want to do his work placement with us, as well as over half the volunteers wanting to stay in touch. With quarter one 2014 behind us; I am excited to announce that there will be some fun times ahead for quarter two. Make sure you take a look at all of the events that will be coming up during this time. We look forward to seeing your smiling faces there. The My Plan, My Choice: Early Start Program was established as a pilot program in 2010 to trial individualised funding for families. The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) has continued to grow and I am pleased to introduce a number of new faces to the team that will assist me to drive our organisation towards a great future with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Michelle Hodge has come on board as the new Executive Leader, Accommodation & Supported Living, Nicola Hayhoe, who has been relieving in this role for the past 10 months, will now focus solely as the Executive Leader, Community & Lifestyles. Lastly, I would also like to officially welcome Brian Ward and Naomi McCorkell to the SLT. Brian has been acting as our interim CFO for the last few months but has now agreed to join Ability Options on a permanent basis and Naomi has moved into the role of Executive Leader—New South Wales NDIS. Our annual strategic planning day took place in February. This day was a huge success with the SLT, Board Directors and Our Patron working towards shaping the future of Ability Options as we move ahead into the NDIS. Outcomes from the day included developing initiatives that will drive growth across all divisions which will form part of the overall business plan for Ability Options 2014–2017. We look forward to working with our clients, families and carers and progressing with our new direction of ‘One Trusted Source—Many Options’. Best regards, Fred JP Van Steel Chief Executive Officer 2 AbleCable April 2014 The case management team operates this program with 23 families currently participating, and 16 families successfully completing the program with some positive results as their young ones started school this year. This program is aimed at building on a family’s knowledge; skills and capacity to self-manage the needs of their child with a developmental delay or disability. It aims to allow parents to have a significant role in determining the supports and services required for their child with disability aged 0–5 years not yet attending school. • Flexibility and the use of creative solutions are used to address families’ critical stresses; • The child’s every experience includes supports and services that promote skill development and independence; • Family culture and diversity is acknowledged and respected. • Community access and inclusion provide opportunities to enable families to build their own supportive networks. Families have purchased therapies, resources, activities and equipment with the funding allocated. Some outcomes include improved motor skills, speech, language and communication. Purchasing equipment has enabled some families to have improved community access and allows more flexibility within the family unit. In two cases families were able to purchase second skins body splints, which are designed to improve specific skills for each individual, to support with sitting skills, standing skills, stepping or mobility skills as well as transfers from sitting to standing, posture, control and stability of the trunk. Body splints cost over $2,000 and families would not have been able to afford these without the Early Start funding. The participants are now able to sit up using the body splints and become more involved in family time and socialisation with other children. My name is Sarah and I have been a volunteer and client with Ability Options. In 2013 I registered with the South Western Sydney Institute TAFE for the Diploma of Disability course. It was being offered full-time which was exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, at time of registration there were low numbers and I received a text to notify me that they had no start date at this point. A few weeks later I received an email with enrolment details as the course was going to proceed with 12 students. I was ecstatic that I had been accepted into the course and was looking forward to commencing my studies. Due to some previous studies I was even lucky to have 3 of my units credited which meant that I only had to complete 13 units to receive my Diploma. During the second semester, I went on a six week vacation to visit my family in England which I had not been back to in 28 years. I had a fabulous holiday and really enjoyed catching up with my family and look forward to future holidays over there. (Intellectual, Neurological and Psychiatric) who assisted me to undertake this study; it means so much to me. The course teacher, Gricel Mendez, and the TAFE were so supportive and flexible throughout my course and assisted me to ensure that I would still complete the course on time in November even though I had been on my holiday. We sat down together to ensure that we knew what work I would need to complete on my return and how many hours I would be required to make up. I could not believe how supportive and flexible they were and was extremely appreciative at not having to be withdrawn from the course. My Plan for 2014 is to undertake my Diploma in Case Management at the same TAFE—Sarah. On 25 November 2013, I completed my Diploma in Disability. Where other TAFEs had previously advised that I would not be able to complete it, I persevered and with some hard work achieved my goal and showed that anything is possible if you want it enough. I would like to thank my TAFE teachers and teacher consultants Sarah (middle) with her TAFE support network. Individualised Drop in Support (Outreach) Employment Star Ratings on the Rise This program has two streams either short term or long term support. Both are to provide support to individuals that live independently in the community. With the recent public release of the Disability Employment Services star ratings it is clear that Ability Options is sitting in a solid position. Drop in Support builds capacity with individuals at home and within their community. It enables individuals to maximise their independence and assist them to remain in their own home. They are also given the opportunity to socialise and build social networks. Support is also given to our ageing clients that need to look at future planning, including support to address their changing health needs. This is done through client choice and tailoring their individual plan. If you are interested in becoming part of our outreach program, please contact Alison Carpenter on 02 4722 6523 or email [email protected] Over 70% of sites have improved their performance compared with the previous release with Mount Druitt ATSI and Seven Hills Generalist contracts now holding the coveted 5 stars and Baulkham Hills, Mount Druitt Generalist and Penrith contracts holding 4 stars. With unemployment predicted to rise this presents the Employment Division with new challenges but these are challenges that the team welcome and will face head-on to ensure all sites achieve the goal of a minimum 4 stars at all locations. AbleCable April 2014 5 University of Newcastle Internship Program Ability Options has partnered with the University of Newcastle to host a Social Work Student on placement for a period of three months. We are delighted to welcome Caitlin Stephenson to the organisation for this period of time and look forward to sharing our knowledge with her. Caitlin is the first social work intern to be placed at Ability Options and will be working closely with the Hunter team. Caitlin will be working on a project plan to develop a volunteer model for the Supported Accommodation Innovation Fund (SAIF) project. We are an experienced National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider supporting more than 30 clients who have made a smooth transition to the NDIS and are experiencing more choice and control over their support needs. For example, as a result of a flexible NDIS plan, one of our clients who had been working in supported employment for 15 years is now undertaking a Business Administration course at TAFE and working in an office one day per week. They are now thinking about how their life could be different and working closely with the Ability Options’ support team. They are achieving the goals set with them and could be achieving paid work in mainstream employment in the near future. When the scheme is rolled out in your area, Ability Options will support you through your transition process to the NDIS. This will involve a meeting with National Disability Insurance Agency Planner to plan your new support arrangements in line with your goals and aspirations. We can be involved in this planning meeting to assist you. The National Disability Insurance Agency will want to hear about your goals and aspirations. You may already know what these are or you can think about these before attending your planning meeting. Whilst you may not be transitioning for a few years yet, you can still begin preparing by considering these questions: The social activities that I participate in at home or familiar places with family and friends are? The things that are most important to me are? The things that I like are? The community activities that I participate in are? If you have any questions about the NDIS, please feel free to call our Hunter team on 1300 422 454. 6 AbleCable April 2014 The things I would most like to change are? The things in my life that are really working for me are? The things I would really like to try are? Supported Accommodation Innovation Fund (SAIF) Key-ring Model Ability Options’ SAIF Key-ring Model for the Hunter and Central Coast offers a new way of living in an architecturally designed brand new twobedroom villa or duplex in a supported environment. The SAIF project is a joint initiative between Ability Options and Compass Housing and is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services. This program brings together 20 people across six suburbs in the Hunter and Central Coast who will be part of our Key-ring Model of support. The Ability Options Key-ring Model is a supported living network made up of ten homes and membership of the Ability Options Key-ring Model is made up of ten people living with disability (Key-ring members) and one Key-ring volunteer. The volunteer is a person who helps out the Key-ring members. Ability Options believes that community and informal support are very important. The Key-ring network encourages members to be good neighbours, to support each other and to share their skills. Having many networks mean that there are lots of other members, the Key-ring volunteer and skilled support workers live just around the corner, so you are less likely to feel lonely or isolated. Construction on the first units commenced late last year and are nearing completion with our first clients preparing to move into their new homes next month. The properties are located in Elermore Vale, Wallsend, Edgeworth, Canton Beach, Gorokan and Wyoming and will be completed by July 2014. A meet and greet morning tea was held on Tuesday 18 March for Hunter participants to meet each other and discuss topics relating to their preparation for moving into supported accommodation. All participants are very excited about moving out on their own and shared some insights into what they are looking forward to—with ‘getting away from mum and dad’ the most popular comment. AbleCable April 2014 7 Feiz is now ready to enter the workforce thanks to his Employment Consultant Throughout 2013, Feiz was suffering from bipolar disorder that saw him hospitalised on a number of occasions. After working through his condition with his Employment Consultant, Nigel, Feiz is back to feeling great and looking forward to his prospects for employment. Feiz comments ‘Nigel was instrumental in understanding the needs that I required and even in some instances before I knew what it was that I required. He ensured that my family obligations and living arrangements were also taken into account through this process’. After identifying that Feiz was struggling with his condition, Nigel recommended that Feiz seek to obtain the Disability Support Pension (DSP) to remove any undue pressures associated with job search and focus on returning to a full bill of health. Nigel assisted Feiz every step of the way including attending his job capacity assessment and advocated for him to ensure that Feiz was well represented and facilitated his DSP application process. He continues ‘I am so grateful for the assistance Nigel provided me, he saw me as a complete person and provided a workable solution that would provide a guaranteed safety net that didn’t involve any external pressure’. Feiz is now looking to gain employment and continues to be supported by Nigel. Outback Steakhouse awards Michelle Employee of the Month Michelle was recently awarded employee of the month at Outback Steakhouse. Michelle is a caring, independent, intelligent but fiercely private person. Prior to obtaining her position with Outback Steakhouse she had been out of work and had lost a lot of confidence not only in herself but also her abilities. Now with this new lease on life, she is thriving in the work environment and is slowly regaining her confidence. When asked how she felt about receiving this amazing award, she commented “I wasn’t expecting it but it feels fantastic” she continues on “I still have a lot to learn and there is still room for more growth but right now I am very excited”. It is success stories like this that makes the decision easy about employing people with disability. Outback Steakhouse has been working with Ability Options for over 3 years, during this time there has been a number of employees who have commenced 8 AbleCable April 2014 their hospitality careers with Outback Steakhouse of which a number of them still remain with this employment partner. With the ever changing landscapes of business, Ability Options makes it easy because they grow and adjust to suit the business they are working with”. Michelle with restaurant Manager, Mike Leura Garage partnership Leura Garage is a café-restaurant that is located in the Blue Mountains. Located just off the main tourist drag, Leura Garage is a funky and unique cafe that caters to locals and tourists alike. Decorated to look like a refurbished service garage, it’s very family friendly and offers an innovative and modern cuisine. Leura Garage approached Ability Options in February to bring on board one employee but after meeting with Job Support Consultant, Heidi Van Gender, who educated them on the services and support that is provided by Ability Options, they decided to employ another two candidates. The three clients that have been placed currently work to set up and clean the restaurant and many other additional tasks that are assigned by managers. As these clients develop confidence, they will also be provided with opportunities to assist with food preparation and customer service, opening the door for further candidates to be placed with Leura Garage. This is an amazing outcome for the three employees that have been placed, they are flourishing in their new careers and for two of them it is the first time they have been in paid employment. They are developing social networks with the other employees and developing a great sense of achievement firstly by gaining employment and then by successfully travelling to their workplace, completing their workplace activities, in which they take great pride. Leura Garage completely understands the needs that some of our clients present with, and have been extremely flexible in the working days and hours to accommodate those needs. All staff are completely supportive providing assistance if and when required and making them feel part of the team as a valued staff member. Thank you to Leura Garage for providing this amazing opportunity for our clients to work in your establishment; it is a great place for us to work with you and within the community that you provide your services too. Harmony Day Harmony Day kicked off in 2014 on 21 March. Ability Options Employment attended events in both Campbelltown and Penrith. Harmony Day is a Government initiative of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it. At both locations there were a number of community activities held including NRL Ambassadors, entertainment dancers, sporting demonstrations and singers from a range of different cultures. Ability Options Employment spent their time networking with a number of people from the community, some who may not have even had disability but were aware of someone within their immediate network who may need the assistance of Ability Options. We were that busy that within the first half an hour we started to run low on all the promotional materials that we had with us. What a great way to spend the day and end on an even higher note with the four referrals that we received. We would like to say a big thank you to the event organisers who were fantastic on the day. AbleCable April 2014 9 TCM Project Ability Options has developed a project to facilitate the implementation of ‘The Care Manager (TCM)’ client management system. This system will enable Ability Options to more readily meet its obligations and objectives in delivering services to its clients, supporting them to participate and live independently in their local communities. On Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 March presenter Costa Georgiadis from the ABC network dropped in to film an upcoming episode of Gardening Australia featuring both our Nursery but more importantly all staff members. The episode features the process that is involved from seeding our plants through to the sale process. This project commenced in March and will evolve over the next eight months through the completion of five main phases: Our staff was extremely excited about having a celebrity in their backyard and over the two days, were offered the opportunity to interact with Costa and demonstrate the types of activities that are involved in their every day jobs. All staff had an absolute ball filming and cannot wait to see the upcoming episode. 1. Planning 2. Identificationofprogramneeds 3. Execution of training and testing 4. Setting up a control environment in production mode 5. Enhancementphaseidentifyingspecific enhancements for future implementation. A gap analysis has been completed and a detailed project plan has been developed. TCM will become the “One Source of Truth” for Ability Options and provide an important link between Ability Options and its clients, in terms of maintenance of client information, accurate record keeping, individualised budgets, goal oriented care plans and effective and appropriate rostering and service delivery. TCM will also provide a range of reports that will benefit the ongoing program management and resources for future planning and delivery of services across all its programs. 10 Gardening Australia AbleCable April 2014 The episode is due to air on Saturday 3 May 2014 from 6.30pm and will also be available for streaming from the Gardening Australia website after this date. ZEST Awards Ability Options received two nominations in the recent ZEST Awards. Firstly, Mary Richards was nominated in the Hall of Fame category for her tireless efforts of working within the disability industry for 25 years. The second nomination was received for our Wholesale Nursery as an Exceptional Social Enterprise in a Not-for-Profit. On Wednesday 26 February 2014, Ability Option staff members showed their support of both nominations by attending the awards ceremony. The evening was a nervous time for both Mary and Talbot representing the Nursery, both honoured to be there as finalists in their nominated category. The first one to be called up was Talbot from the Nursery who was unsuccessful on the night, having said that achieving a nomination and being a finalist is a wonderful award in itself. The last category of the night was to announce the winner of the Hall of Fame. Mary was accompanied by her daughter to the event and both were excited. The winners in the category were worthy and again Mary has been publicly recognised as being a finalist in this category for her 25 years of outstanding service to Ability Options and the industry as a whole.
