Located on a 25–acre campus in west St. Louis County, Whitfield’s demanding academic program coupled with the support of a dedicated, world-class faculty prepares graduates for both the college experience and life beyond. With an average class size of 12 and a school size of 470, Whitfield is able to develop and maintain a community of families which values mutual respect and personal responsibility. Students are encouraged to take part in activities including visual and performing arts, 22 athletic teams, 20 clubs and organizations and community service. STUDENT BODY: COLLEGE COUNSELING: Lower School (grades 6–8): 33% of total enrollment Upper School (grades 9–12): 67% of total enrollment 17% students of color and international students Admission officers are welcome to visit Whitfield beginning at 8:15 a.m.; the last visit begins at 2:15 p.m. Appointments should be arranged with College Counseling two weeks in advance. FACULTY: 65 full-time faculty, 31 with advanced degrees STUDENT/TEACHER RATIO: 8:1 Average class size: 12 SCHOOL CALENDAR: Whitfield’s academic calendar is divided into two semesters and courses are year-long. CLASS SCHEDULE: Whitfield uses a block scheduling system. Academic classes are 90 minutes long and full-credit classes meet three times a week for the whole year. Technology: With a nationally recogized laptop program, employing both Linux and Microsoft operating systems, Whitfield students learn how and when to use technology to take their learning to a new, more sophisticated level. COLLEGE ADMISSION PACKET: The College Counseling Office sends a packet to each admission office to which a student is applying. The packet includes the following pieces of information: a high school transcript, a secondary school report, a counselor’s recommendation and this Whitfield School Profile. Placement statistics, Class of 2008: 100% of the graduates admitted to four-year colleges and universities 85% of the Class of 2008 enrolled at private colleges and universities 88% of the Class of 2008 enrolled in out-of-state colleges 66% of the Class of 2008 enrolled in colleges outside the Midwest ADVANCED PLACEMENT CURRICULUM: APs are the most advanced courses available at Whitfield. Enrollment in Advanced Placement courses is by faculty recommendation. All students enrolled in AP courses take the appropriate AP exams. This school year, Whitfield is offering: Calculus AB; Chemistry; French Language; Spanish Language; and Spanish Literature. *Girls have the opportunity to try out for the boys’ teams. **Boys have the opportunity to try out for the girls’ team. Students may prepare independently for the English Language and Composition, Physics B, United States History and World History exams. ExtraCurricular Activities: AP classes are unweighted when calculating GPAs. Aeneid (electronic newspaper), Ambassador Program (new student orientation leaders and tour guides), Amnesty International, Athletics, Book Club, Cheerleading, Chess Club, Dance/Pom Squad, ECHO (environmental club), Green Scene (Pep Club), Historically Significant Film Society, Iliad (yearbook), International Thespian Society, Model UN, Odyssey (newspaper), Performing Arts, The Secret Voice (literary magazine), Social Justice Project, Student Council, Honor Council and Student Technology Club Sophomore, JUNIOR AND SENIOR SEMINARS: Sophomore and Junior Seminars are weekly courses in which students meet for college preparation work, including study and life skills, practice sessions for standardized tests, writing skills improvement, health and college search planning. Senior Seminar contains four components. Three segments, College Preparation, Spring Quest and Senior Exhibition, are required for graduation; the fourth component, Senior Independent Study, is an optional portion of the class. CURRICULUM AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS, CLASS OF 2009: Whitfield’s academic goals are set at the highest (honors) standard. Students have the opportunity to prepare for Advanced Placement exams (see previous page). Independent study in language, mathematics and science is offered for the exceptional student who completes Whitfield’s curriculum early. The current seniors are required to take four years each of English, social studies, mathematics, science and language; one year each of physical education, fine arts, Sophomore Seminar, Junior Seminar and Senior Seminar. Courses with bullets are required for graduation. The President of the School has the right to waive or alter any requirements. Sophomores are required to take biology and chemistry concurrently, the juniors, chemistry and physics. Grades, including those for AP classes, are unweighted. Whitfield's grading and curriculum reflect the rigor appropriate for the challenge of college preparatory work. The GPA reflects all course work taken at Whitfield for grades 9–12. Whitfield reports GPAs to colleges and universities at the end of the sixth, seventh and eighth high school semesters. A student’s GPA is based on a four-point system as follows: A 4.0 C 2.0 A- 3.67 C- 1.67 B+ 3.33 D+ 1.33 B 3.0 D 1.0 B- 2.67 D- 0.67 C+ 2.33 F 0.0 There are 73 seniors in the Class of 2009. The highest GPA is 4.0; the range of GPAs for the middle 50% of the class of 2009 is 3.24-3.75. Transcripts reflect semester grades. Seventh semester grades are mailed in January, as soon as they are available. Students arrange with the testing services to have scores sent directly to the colleges and universities. Whitfield does not report any test scores on the transcript.
