Introducing the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones Set
Before introducing the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones Set,
make copies of this Really Good Stuff® Activity Guide and file the
pages for future use. Or, download another copy of it from our
Web site at www.reallygoodstuff.com.
Gather students, along with several Slide and Learn™ Homophones, and explain to students that they are going to use
the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones to review how to use and spell
homophones correctly. If necessary, remind students that
homophones are words that sound alike but have different
spellings and meanings. Select one Slide and Learn™ Homophones, and put it in the position so that the blank lines
are in the windows. Read the sentence on the Slide and Learn™ Homophones, then slide the vertical pieces so that the correct
words are in the windows. Show the correct sentence to
students, read it, turn the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones over,
and show students how the bars line up when you choose the
correct words. Then move the pieces so that incorrect words are
in the windows, show the incorrect sentence to students, and
turn the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones over so that students
can see that the bars do not line up when you choose incorrect
words. Then correct the sentence, show it to students again, and
read the sentence together. Explain to students that they are to
use the context of each sentence to determine which homophone
goes in which space on the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones.
Choose another Slide and Learn™ - Homophones; and ask for a
volunteer to come forward, read the sentence on the slider with
the blanks, and slide into the correct position. Then have him or
her turn the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones over to check his or
her work. Repeat this process with Two- and Three-Word Slide
and Learn™ - Homophones until students understand how to
use them.
Homophone Fill-In
Copy the Homophone Fill-In Reproducible, and give it to students
or place it in your literacy center for students to complete as
they work with the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones. Show
students how to look at the number on the back of each Slide
and Learn™ - Homophones to see the number that corresponds to
the sentence on the reproducible.

Place the Two- and Three-Word Slide and Learn™ - Homophones
that you want students to practice in the Zippered Storage Bag,
and place it in your literacy center along with copies of the
Homophone Sentences Reproducible. Students are to arrange
and check all of the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones that are in
the Bag, and then select one of the sentences on a Slide and
Learn™ - Homophones, and complete a reproducible as follows:
1. Copy the selected sentence from the Slide and Learn™ Homophones on the lines under My Slide and Learn™
sentence.
2. Write a homophone from the selected sentence next to the
Homophone #1, #2, and (if appropriate) #3.
3. Write an original sentence using each homophone on the
lines under My Sentence.
Students can complete one or more of the reproducibles to show
they understand the meaning of the two- or three-word
homophones provided in the Slide and Learn™ - Homophones Set.
Homophone Slide Off
Divide students into two teams and have them form two lines
parallel to each other. Write a name for each team on the board.
Hand a Slide and Learn™ - Homophones to the first student in
each line, and challenge them to arrange the Slides as quickly as
they can. The first student to arrange the Slide and Learn™ Homophones correctly gets a tally mark for his or her team.
These students go to the end of the line, and you hand another
Slide and Learn™ - Homophones to the first student in each team
line. The game continues until each student has had a turn, then
count the tally marks to declare a winning team.
Learning More Homophones
Copy the New Homophones Reproducible, and write Homophone
Brainstorm on your board. Give students a few minutes to create
a list of additional homophones they have come across in their
reading or writing lessons. Have them share their homophones
with the class, and record their two- or three-word homophones
on the board. Once you have a list of at least a dozen, give a
copy of the reproducible and a Slide and Learn™ - Homophones
to each student. Tell students to write one of the new two- or
three-word homophones at the top of the reproducible, illustrate
them, write a sentence containing the homophones (using the
Slide and Learn™ - Homophones as an example), and illustrate
their sentence. Once everyone has completed the reproducible,
urge students to share their sentences and illustrations with
the class.
To enhance the lesson, you can give students a copy of the
Homophone Sentences Reproducible, and instruct them to copy
their new sentence on the lines, complete the rest of the
reproducible, and hand it in.
