MAXIMUM PRACTICAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE HELPING YOU CHOOSE Y O U R M A G N E T Comparison of Magnet Materials Dimensions and Tolerances Flexible Magnets: very low cost, easy to use, easy to cut with scissors or paper cutters, can be laminated with an adhesive on one side making it very easy to attach to your product. Normally magnetized with multiple poles on only one surface to give higher holding strength. High energy flexible magnets are similar in strength to the Ceramic 1 types, but are far easier to machine to specific shapes and sizes. All dimensions in this catalog are in inches. (To convert from inches to millimeters, multiply the inch dimensions by 25.4.) The dimensions stated in the catalog are nominal dimensions. Actual dimensions vary a little from the nominal. The band within which the dimensions may vary is the “tolerance band”. In general, you can expect a standard tolerance of + 0.010" on the thickness if machined, or + 0.020" if not machined. (The tolerance on the thickness of Flexible materials is + 0.005".) On other dimensions, the tolerances are the greater of + 0.020" or + 2% of the dimension. Ceramic Magnets: low cost, yet relatively high strength, the most widely used magnets today. Ceramic 5 and 8 are significantly stronger than the Ceramic 1 types. A wide variety of standard shapes and sizes are available. Hard to machine, Ceramic magnets are highly resistant to demagnetization. Alnico Magnets: The most temperature stable magnet material, can be used up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit! Alnico 5 should normally be used in long (in relation to the other dimensions) lengths, to avoid self demagnetization. Alnico 8 can be used short lengths. Very hard to machine, Alnicos are relatively costly materials, containing large amounts of cobalt. Alnicos require careful handling to avoid demagnetization. Neodymium Rare Earth Magnets: The most powerful class of magnet materials available today. A Neodymium magnet the size of a grape has the same strength as a Ceramic magnet the size of a tennis ball - 9 times it’s volume! Though costly, these magnets can be used very effectively to miniaturize large components. Because of their high strength, smaller magnets can be used to get the same energy. Extremely resistant to demagnetization, Neodymium magnets have to be protected against rust - by encapsulating, painting, varnishing, or, plating - and should not be used at temperatures above about 300 degrees Fahrenheit without careful design. Samarium Cobalt Rare Earth Magnets: The most costly magnet material, Samarium Cobalts can maintain their high magnetic properties up to almost 600 degrees Fahrenheit, and do not have any rusting problems. This material is extremely brittle, hard to machine, and should be handled with care to avoid chipping and cracking. Please remember, we have a full machine shop and are able to custom machine any magnet material to virtually any shape, size, and tolerance. The “Magnetization Direction” M Except for the low energy Flexibles and the Ceramic 1 types, all magnet materials in this catalog are “oriented”. This means that they can only be magnetized through one specific direction. The orientation direction is shown by the symbol M . The magnetic poles and therefore the strongest surfaces are on either end of the arrows. Assembling Your Magnets Adhesives of various types are recommended to assemble magnets to your product. All adhesives require that for best results the surfaces to be bonded should be clean and dry. It is best to experiment with adhesives for your product before deciding on one. Safety First Large Ceramic magnets and all Rare Earth magnets can be extremely powerful, and great care should be taken to avoid injury to personnel who handle the magnets. All hard magnet materials are brittle, so avoid dropping them or allowing them to snap towards each other. And remember that magnetic fields can destroy data on floppy discs and should be kept away from sensitive electronic equipment. FLEXIBLE F L E X M AN U FA S T R SA LE S & G CT U RI NC. IN Total Magnetic Solutions The Ultimate in Versatility! Low cost EZ-Grip Flexible Magnetic Strip makes your product instantly magnetic. From the largest inventory of Flexible Magnets anywhere. In convenient roll sizes. We supply rolls of about 12” diameter for ease of handling. For material which is 0.060” thick, this is a 100 foot long roll weighing in at about 5 pounds. For 1/8” thick material, 50 foot rolls are supplied. 1/4” thick material is normally supplied in 100 foot rolls, 24” in diameter. Longer roll sizes are available. With or without pressure sensitive adhesive backing. Rubber based adhesives (Type A) for general purpose indoor applications, and acrylic based adhesives (Type T) for general purpose outdoor applications, are standard. Type T adhesives perform better with plastics and other “hard to adhere” materials. Other non standard adhesives are available to meet your requirements. We recommend that adhesives be tested on your product prior to ordering production quantities. Cut to length. We can cut strip to any specified length. Tolerances on cut dimensions are the greater of + 0.030” or + 2% of the cut length. Scored to length. Instead of cutting all the way through, material can be scored to length. This allows greater ease in removing liner paper for adhesive backed strip, and storage of material in roll form. To break off, simply bend the material at the score line, and the part easily breaks to size. Special non standard sizes, and custom extruded shapes. Call our sales team to discuss special non standard sizes and shapes. To order strip with adhesive, simply add the letter “A” or “T” to the part number. For example, 0632A is 0.500” wide x 0.060” thick laminated with Type A general purpose indoor adhesive. Extremely powerful, all Rare Earth magnets should be handled carefully to avoid injury. Samarium Cobalts are very brittle, and will chip and shatter easily if allowed to drop or snap together. Use these magnets when space is a limiting factor, high magnetic strength is required, or where temperatures are expected to exceed about 300 degrees Fahrenheit. The first two digits of the Part Number represent the “grade” of the material. The higher the grade, the higher the energy available from the magnet. We have available Samarium grades up to 32 in block shapes, though these are used mainly for more technical applications and are therefore not shown here. Please call us for more information on these. Our rectangular Samarium Cobalt Rare Earth Magnets are not shown in this catalog. Many other standard sizes are available. Standard (or “conventional”) magnetization is straight through the orientation direction, and produces one North pole and one South pole. The Rare Earth magnets are extremely difficult to magnetize in non-standard ways. However, the Flexible and Ceramic types can be magnetized in many non-standard ways to give special results. M AN U FA SA LE S & G CT U RI NC. IN Total Magnetic Solutions MAGNET TERMINOLGY & Magnet “strength” (symbol B) is measured in Gauss (symbol G). The maximum magnetic flux density available from a magnet is given the special symbol Br. This is rarely possible, and very difficult, to achieve in practical applications. The flux density actually achieved in practice can be changed by creating a “magnetic circuit” which might involve one or more magnets and some steel components. You can measure the flux density emanating from a magnet using a Gaussmeter. For a complete list of our electromagnets, please see our “Magnets for Material Handling” catalog. Rectifiers are necessary if used with AC power sources, or they may be operated with 12 Volt batteries - see the wattage ratings for each magnet to determine the size of the battery required. The size and location of the mounting holes shown are standard, but they can be provided with special hole patterns if required. Leads are normally located on the sides of the magnets. Again, these can be located elsewhere for special applications. These electromagnets should only be used where the entire surface is in complete contact with the surface of the load. Load surface should be smooth and flat. Holding values have already been de-rated by 50% for safety. For critical applications, you may need to apply a further safety factor.
