A Quick Look at Different Magnet Materials
Modern magnet materials are available in many different alloys, each
designed to achieve a different objective. The ultimate objective is
usually to choose the most economical magnet that will do the job
reliably. Correct selection of the magnet material, size, and shape, can
give you just that. Tell us about your application, and we’ll help.

Comparison of Magnet Materials
Dimensions and Tolerances
Flexible Magnets: very low cost, easy to use, easy to cut
with scissors or paper cutters, can be laminated with an
adhesive on one side making it very easy to attach to your
product. Normally magnetized with multiple poles on only
one surface to give higher holding strength. High energy
flexible magnets are similar in strength to the Ceramic 1
types, but are far easier to machine to specific shapes and
sizes.
All dimensions in this catalog are in inches. (To convert
from inches to millimeters, multiply the inch dimensions by
25.4.) The dimensions stated in the catalog are nominal
dimensions. Actual dimensions vary a little from the
nominal. The band within which the dimensions may vary
is the “tolerance band”. In general, you can expect a
standard tolerance of + 0.010" on the thickness if machined,
or + 0.020" if not machined. (The tolerance on the
thickness of Flexible materials is + 0.005".) On other
dimensions, the tolerances are the greater of + 0.020" or
+ 2% of the dimension.
Ceramic Magnets: low cost, yet relatively high strength, the
most widely used magnets today. Ceramic 5 and 8 are
significantly stronger than the Ceramic 1 types. A wide
variety of standard shapes and sizes are available. Hard to
machine, Ceramic magnets are highly resistant to demagnetization.
Alnico Magnets: The most temperature stable magnet
material, can be used up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit!
Alnico 5 should normally be used in long (in relation to the
other dimensions) lengths, to avoid self demagnetization.
Alnico 8 can be used short lengths. Very hard to machine,
Alnicos are relatively costly materials, containing large
amounts of cobalt. Alnicos require careful handling to avoid
demagnetization.
Neodymium Rare Earth Magnets: The most powerful class
of magnet materials available today. A Neodymium magnet
the size of a grape has the same strength as a Ceramic
magnet the size of a tennis ball - 9 times it’s volume!
Though costly, these magnets can be used very effectively to
miniaturize large components. Because of their high
strength, smaller magnets can be used to get the same energy. Extremely resistant to demagnetization, Neodymium
magnets have to be protected against rust - by encapsulating,
painting, varnishing, or, plating - and should not be used at
temperatures above about 300 degrees Fahrenheit without
careful design.
Samarium Cobalt Rare Earth Magnets: The most costly
magnet material, Samarium Cobalts can maintain their high
magnetic properties up to almost 600 degrees Fahrenheit,
and do not have any rusting problems. This material is
extremely brittle, hard to machine, and should be handled
with care to avoid chipping and cracking.
Please remember, we have a full machine shop and are able
to custom machine any magnet material to virtually any
shape, size, and tolerance.
The “Magnetization Direction”
M
Except for the low energy Flexibles and the Ceramic 1 types,
all magnet materials in this catalog are “oriented”. This
means that they can only be magnetized through one specific
direction. The orientation direction is shown by the
symbol M . The magnetic poles and therefore the strongest
surfaces are on either end of the arrows.
Assembling Your Magnets
Adhesives of various types are recommended to assemble
magnets to your product. All adhesives require that for best
results the surfaces to be bonded should be clean and dry. It
is best to experiment with adhesives for your product before
deciding on one.
Safety First
Large Ceramic magnets and all Rare Earth magnets can be
extremely powerful, and great care should be taken to avoid
injury to personnel who handle the magnets. All hard
magnet materials are brittle, so avoid dropping them or
allowing them to snap towards each other. And remember
that magnetic fields can destroy data on floppy discs and
should be kept away from sensitive electronic equipment.

Total Magnetic Solutions
The Ultimate in Versatility! Low cost EZ-Grip Flexible Magnetic Strip
makes your product instantly magnetic. From the largest inventory of
Flexible Magnets anywhere.
In convenient roll sizes. We supply rolls of about 12” diameter for ease of
handling. For material which is 0.060” thick, this is a 100 foot long roll weighing
in at about 5 pounds. For 1/8” thick material, 50 foot rolls are supplied. 1/4”
thick material is normally supplied in 100 foot rolls, 24” in diameter. Longer roll
sizes are available.
With or without pressure sensitive adhesive backing. Rubber based adhesives
(Type A) for general purpose indoor applications, and acrylic based adhesives
(Type T) for general purpose outdoor applications, are standard. Type T adhesives
perform better with plastics and other “hard to adhere” materials. Other non
standard adhesives are available to meet your requirements. We recommend that
adhesives be tested on your product prior to ordering production quantities.
Cut to length. We can cut strip to any specified length. Tolerances on cut
dimensions are the greater of + 0.030” or + 2% of the cut length.
Scored to length. Instead of cutting all the way through, material can be scored
to length. This allows greater ease in removing liner paper for adhesive backed
strip, and storage of material in roll form. To break off, simply bend the material
at the score line, and the part easily breaks to size.
Special non standard sizes, and custom extruded shapes. Call our sales team
to discuss special non standard sizes and shapes.
To order strip with adhesive, simply add the letter “A” or “T” to the part number. For
example, 0632A is 0.500” wide x 0.060” thick laminated with Type A general purpose
indoor adhesive.

Care Tips: If applying to a vehicle, both the magnet and vehicle
surfaces should be clean, dry, and waxed prior to applying. Generous
waxing prevents marring of painted surfaces, especially in hot
climates. It is best to remove the magnetic sheet weekly from painted
surfaces for cleaning and to ensure that moisture is not collecting
between the surfaces. (These precautions are not necessary when
using Safemag sheeting.) We do not recommend applying magnetic
sheet to repainted vehicle surfaces.

EZ-Grip Flexible Magnetic Sheet
For signs, warehouse labelling, movable art, novelties, magnetic
business cards, magnetic frames and more.
Easily printable, grips tight to any steel surface.
In convenient roll sizes. 24” wide, 50 foot or 100 foot long rolls are
standard - smaller orders are gladly accommodated. Roll sizes up to 200
feet long are available on special request. A 100 foot roll of 0.030” thick
material weighs about 115 pounds.
With or without pressure sensitive adhesive backing. Standard are
rubber based adhesives for general purpose indoor applications, and
acrylic based adhesives for general purpose outdoor use. Adhesives should
be tested on your product to ensure that they are compatible prior to
ordering production quantities.
Cut to length. We can cut sheet to any specified length. Tolerances on
cut dimensions are the greater of + 0.030” or + 2% of the cut length.
Slit to width. We can slit standard 24” wide sheet to your specified
width. Slitting tolerances are the greater of + 0.060 or + 3% of the slit
dimension.
In eleven colors. Red, yellow, orange, blue, green, brown, black, silver,
gold, white vinyl laminates, and chrome mylar laminate. Call our sales
team to discuss availability of special colors.
With a protective backcoating. Safemag™ sheeting is backcoated to
provide a safe barrier between the magnetic surface and the surface to
which it is applied, an important new benefit to sign makers in applications such as vehicle signs. It also helps screeners when printed magnets
have to be stacked during the printing process.
Flexible magnetic sheet is sold by the square foot: for example, a 2 foot
wide by 5 foot long piece is 10 square feet. Our minimum order is 10
square feet.

High Energy Flexible Magnets
Easy to machine and cut
Will not shatter or break
As strong as or stronger than hard
Ceramic 1 Magnets
Stronger (and more costly) than the regular flexible
magnet material, this High Energy Flexible material is
about the same strength as the hard Ceramic 1 types
(some grades are actually stronger than the Ceramic 1
types), but much easier to cut, machine, punch to
shapes, and otherwise customize.
Special magnetizing patterns are available to give the
best performance for your application. Please describe
your application to our sales-people so we can help
you select the best type for the job.
Please note that the thicker the strip, the shorter the
lengths that we can supply them in, since the strips get
increasingly difficult to coil as the thickness increases.
For example, strips which are 1/4" thick can be
supplied in maximum lengths of about 6 feet.
Shown here are a small sampling of the strip sizes and
a few of the more popular standard shapes and sizes
that we carry. Please ask if you have other size
requirements.

Large Blocks Give Lots of Strength. Or we can cut
them to your exact specs.
Ceramic 8 Magnets are about the same
strength as the Ceramic 5 types under most
normal operating conditions.
They perform better under “dynamic load” conditions
(for example in motors, or at high temperatures). Use
these large blocks when you need to project magnetic
fields a long way, or need a lot of total magnetic field.
Also, we can use these blocks to cut magnets to
whatever size you need for your application.

Non-Oriented, can be magnetized in
any direction.
Economical magnets available in many different sizes.
When magnetized with multiple poles on one side, can pull almost
as strongly as the Ceramic 5 types.
Because they are not “pre-oriented” they can be magnetized in any
direction, unlike most other magnet materials - across a diameter,
across any of the three dimensions of a bar magnet, or for that
matter in any other direction!

Remember, we have a huge variety of
Alnico magnets in stock. Only a few of
the most common sizes are shown here.
Alnico 5 rod magnets should have lengths
long in comparison to their diameters in
order to avoid self demagnetization - a
ratio of 5 to 1 is best. Any lengths can be
cut to your requirements. Part numbers
beginning with CG have already been
machined to tolerances of + .001. Part
numbers beginning with RR are “as cast”
and tolerances are wider - the greater of +
.015 or 2% of the dimension.
Sintered Alnico 8 is more resistant
to demagnetization than Alnico 5
material, and can therefore be used in the
thin disc shapes shown here without
self demagnetization. Like the Alnico 5
material, Alnico 8 has excellent temperature
stability and can be used to 1,000 degrees
Fahrenheit!

can be done by painting, oiling the surfaces, or
plating. If you foresee any problems, please ask us.
We are able to plate these materials and to apply a
variety of other corrosion resistant coatings.

Powerful, temperature
stable, and won’t rust.
Extremely powerful, all Rare Earth magnets
should be handled carefully to avoid injury.
Samarium Cobalts are very brittle, and will chip
and shatter easily if allowed to drop or snap
together. Use these magnets when space is a
limiting factor, high magnetic strength is
required, or where temperatures are expected
to exceed about 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
The first two digits of the Part
Number represent the “grade” of the material.
The higher the grade, the higher the energy
available from the magnet. We have available
Samarium grades up to 32 in block shapes,
though these are used mainly for more technical applications and are therefore not shown
here. Please call us for more information on
these.
Our rectangular Samarium Cobalt Rare Earth
Magnets are not shown in this catalog. Many
other standard sizes are available. Please call us
with your requirements!
Please remember, we have a full machine
shop and are able to custom machine any
magnet material to virtually any shape,
size, and tolerance.

Different Magnetizing Patterns Give Different Results
Except for the regular Flexible and Ceramic 1 materials, all magnet materials
are “pre-oriented” and can only be magnetized in a particular direction.
Standard (or “conventional”) magnetization is straight through the orientation direction,
and produces one North pole and one South pole. The Rare Earth magnets are extremely
difficult to magnetize in non-standard ways. However, the Flexible and Ceramic types
can be magnetized in many non-standard ways to give special results.

Magnet “strength” (symbol B) is measured in
Gauss (symbol G). The maximum magnetic flux
density available from a magnet is given the
special symbol Br. This is rarely possible, and
very difficult, to achieve in practical applications.
The flux density actually achieved in practice can
be changed by creating a “magnetic circuit”
which might involve one or more magnets
and some steel components. You can measure
the flux density emanating from a magnet
using a Gaussmeter.

KEY
CHARACTERISTICS
Resistance to demagnetization
(symbol H) is measured in Oersteds
(symbol Oe).
Maximum energy available from a
magnet (symbol BHmax) is measured
in Gauss Oersteds (in practice,
millions of Gauss Oersteds, therefore
the symbol MGOe, M for million)
The table summarizes some of the
key characteristics of our magnet
materials. There are actually many
other important characteristics, but
these are normally important in more
technical applications. Please consult
our engineering department for more
information.
** These maximum operating
temperatures apply under certain
conditions and are for reference
only.
If your application will approach
these temperatures, please consult
with our engineers.

Round Holding Magnets
Magnetic Cups hold up to
190 pounds!
Constructed of a steel cup with a ring magnet
assembled inside, these round magnetic cups
have a mounting hole provided for attachment.
The magnet inside the cup has an inside
diameter which is larger than the diameter of the hole
in the cup, so there’s room for a screw head.
Like all other pull ratings, these are tested on a 1/2"
thick, flat, machined steel plate. Use appropriate safety
factors. For any application that is critical, we
recommend a safety factor of two to three.

Magnetic Hand Sweepers
A problem sweeping up nails, tacks, pins,
or other ferrous materials? Clean up with
magnetic sweepers.
Light duty maneuverability
Sturdy welded construction
Release feature
Quick payback
Easy does it with these light duty sweepers.
Easy to use with one hand, their large 6"
diameter x 1/4" wide wheels roll easily over
uneven surfaces. Great for tramp metal pickup
from roofs, construction sites, aisles, or any
area where maneuverability and light weight
are important considerations.
Light weight and compactness make this
little magnetic broom the perfect
companion for one of our larger
sweepers. With it, you'll be able to get at
all those hard to clean areas under
benches and bins, in narrow aisles, and
make a light job of tank cleaning. Fits
standard broom handle (not included).
The MS series incorporate a release feature:
just pull the “T” handle at the top to release
tramp metal picked up by the magnet. The SM
series feature an adjustable sweeping height.
For a more complete listing of magnetic
sweepers and other cleaning and separating
magnets, please see our “Magnets for

Small Round Electromagnets
With up to 600 pounds pull
Power packed electromagnets operate
on 12 Volts DC
Where permanent magnets don’t have
the pull you need, or when a load must
be picked up and released many times,
perhaps automatically, an electromagnet will do the trick.
For a complete list of our electromagnets,
please see our “Magnets for Material
Handling” catalog.
Rectifiers are necessary if used with AC
power sources, or they may be operated
with 12 Volt batteries - see the wattage
ratings for each magnet to determine the
size of the battery required.
The size and location of the mounting
holes shown are standard, but they can be
provided with special hole patterns if
required. Leads are normally located on the
sides of the magnets. Again, these can be
located elsewhere for special applications.
These electromagnets should only be used
where the entire surface is in complete
contact with the surface of the load. Load
surface should be smooth and flat. Holding
values have already been de-rated by 50%
for safety. For critical applications, you may
need to apply a further safety factor.

Max. Hold - The largest field magnitude measured since the last
reset is displayed.
Filter - When the field being measured is noisy, the filter
function will average readings to produce a more stable display.
Alarm - An audible alarm is sounded and the display indicator
flashes when the measured field is higher than the keypad
entered alarm point.
Zero Probe - Used to eliminate probe offsets and small external
fields.
Relative Reading - When activated, measurements are referenced
to the keypad entered reading.
Autoranging - Automatically selects the appropriate range.
Memory Hold - On power down, the 410 stores in non volatile
memory, the complete configuration of the instrument,
including the calibration number and probe offset, making it
unnecessary in most cases to go through a set up procedure on
power up.

+
Pocket magnetometers allow you to check magnets fast and
inexpensively. They are useful in inspection, engineering,
laboratory and tool room.
Check for residual magnetism, polarity (a positive deflection
indicates
a North pole), and relative strength. Use as a “go, no-go” test for
magnets and magnetic devices. Particularly useful when large
numbers of magnets must be tested.
Models available:
#100 - with a -100 to +100 scale.
#50 - with a -50 to +50 scale.
Size: 2-1/2” diameter x 1-1/4 high. Weighs 3 ozs.
Magneview Paper
This unique film allows you to see the magnetization pattern on
your magnets. Poles are seen as dark areas bounded by light lines.
Use to reveal inconsistent magnetization, check for magnetization
patters.
Magnetic Viewer
The B-1022 Magnetic Viewer provides a fast, clean way to view
magnetization patterns, more sensitively than the Magneview Paper.
You can view recorded signals for head alignment, track placement,
and pulse definition on magnetic tape not possible with the Magneview

For Inventors, a basic source book on costs, suppliers,
and types of permanent magnets.
For scientists, teachers and students, a definitive study. The
author - a teacher and practicing engineer- analyzes the worldwide uses of magnets industry by industry, practical applications
product by product, pointing out that there are over a billion
magnets in use - in telephones microphones, TV controls,
motors, solenoids, recording tape, switches, parts sorters,
thermostats, cardiac pumps, thermal measuring devices and
hundreds of other vital products of our age.
The text is straightforward, and easily understood by anyone
with a general technical background, but no specific background in magnets, metallurgy or electricity.
An invaluable reference work, the Permanent Magnet Design and
Application Handbook contains a complete glossary of terms, a full
bibliography, a table of magnetic properties of materials, an
International Index of Permanent Magnetic Materials and
Replacement Guide, and numerous charts and tables on other
aspects of permanent magnet technology.
