Dear Parents,
We have had an upbeat start to the term. Children have returned to their routine with ease,
swimming lessons are more than half way through for children in PP – Yr 2, we are making strong
progress with our whole school behaviour expectations and we are well on our way to achieving what is set
out in our improvement plans.
ANZAC Celebrations –Congratulations to Mr St Quintin and his S3 class for leading the whole school through
the ANZAC ceremony on Friday. The students spoke with confidence, respect and emotion in honour of the
fallen ANZACS and ensured that all children were aware of the significance of this event. I appreciated their
organisation and preparation for the event. Thank you S3.
Congratulations Choir – The Challis Choir represented the school with pride at two important events last
week. The ANZAC Memorial Ceremony was held in Armadale on Wednesday and our Choir had the responsible
role of singing the very moving New Zealand National Anthem followed by the Australian Anthem. I may well
be biased however I think our Choir did a spectacular job in respecting the words in both Anthems with
emotion and pride.
The Choir supported S3 at our own ANZAC assembly on Friday and again sang several moving songs in honour
of the fallen men and women who fought for our country 100 years ago. Thank you to Mrs O’Neill and Mrs
Rochfort for preparing the Choir so well and for introducing the New Zealand Anthem to our ANZAC ceremony.
Ms Wilde played the Last Post on the trumpet which was the first time that the children had heard that
instrument played live at an assembly instead of on a recording. They were mesmerised and respectful. Thank
you to Ms Wilde for having the courage to stand in front of a big audience and put her musical skills on display
at such an important ceremony.
A special thank you to Mrs Sumner who introduced selected Year 6 students to wreath making in preparation
for the ANZAC assembly. Mrs Sumner started this idea last year with Year 6 students and intends to make it a
tradition prior to ANZAC assembly each year. This year the wreaths were spectacular and I would like to thank
the students involved in making them.
Staffing Changes for Term 2 – It has been necessary to make some staffing changes to classes due to the
personal circumstances of some of our teachers. Please see below to see if your child’s class is involved:
S12 – Mrs Golightly is on leave for the rest of the term. Mr Allen will be teaching fulltime in S12 for Term 2
S2 – Mrs Billion will relieve in S2 on Thursdays and Fridays while Mr Fletcher continues his long service leave
for the remainder of the term.
S8- Mrs Billion will relieve for Ms Lattin on Wednesdays so that Ms Lattin can continue her role as Team
Leader of Year 3’s.
Pre K 5 and 6 – Ms Ratcliffe has been appointed to the new Pre Kindy classes on Mon, Tues and Wed.
School Uniforms – We are expecting the new school uniforms to arrive in week 9 and distributed in week 10
of this term. In the meantime please continue to send your child to school in our current school uniform. You
may notice that the Year 6 students are wearing their Leaver’s shirts which were provided free of charge to
every Year 6 student on Friday. The students were appreciative of their new shirts and I have seen most
students wearing them today.
Parent Concerns – Parents are reminded that if they have any concerns about their child whether it is
academic progress, behavioural concerns or emotional needs, the first step is to raise the issue with the
classroom teacher. If, after speaking with the teacher, you are not satisfied with the outcome, you are
welcome to make an appointment with either Mr Morgan or Mrs O’Donovan. If you continue to remain
concerned, please bring the issue to my attention. By following this process, you can be confident that the
issue will be resolved. If you have a concern about a whole of school process or policy, you are welcome to
speak directly to one of the Deputy Principals or
with the Principal.

Hand washing
Washing hands is the easiest way to protect ourselves from contagious diseases, like colds, influenza and
gastroenteritis. Hands should be washed before and after eating or preparing food, after going to the toilet and
after nose blowing.
When teaching your child to wash their hands;
Use clean water and soap, making sure they cover their hands and wrists.
Use a brush to clean under nails if they’re dirty too
Dry their hands with something clean (like a paper towel)
Alcohol based sanitisers are useful when soap and water is not available. Use a half a teaspoon of the product
and encourage your child to rub their hands together until they’re dry. If you can see dirt on their hands, it is
better to use soap and water.

ANZAC Service
nd
On Wednesday 22 April the Challis Community Choir (Years 3-6) and two School
Councillors Jack and Payton attend the ANZAC Choral Service at Memorial Park in
Armadale. Along with 8 other school choirs we sung, reflected and remember the
fallen soldiers of Australia and New Zealand that fought and died at Gallipoli 100
years ago. It was a very moving service and Challis Community Choir was
outstanding with their item, New Zealand Anthem in Maori and English. Jack and
Payton represented our school with pride by placing our wreath at monument. It was
a truly special morning and one that Challis Community Choir was very proud to be
part off.
School Fete

October on our lovely school grounds.
This fete is set to be a fantastic event which will showcase the amazing Challis

enjoying the day.
In the lead up to the Fete we will be asking for donations of specific items to

school with a donation of a toy to give to their teacher. Some ideas of things you could bring in are
action figures, soft toys, cars, balls etc. Please donate toys that are in good condition so they can be
resold. THANK YOU!!
ANZAC DAY WREATH MAKING - THANKYOU
A huge thankyou to all the fantastic Challis children and parents who responded to our
request for flowers last week. We had a great response and ended up with a wonderful
selection of flowers to use in the ANZAC wreaths.
Thirteen Year 6 children were chosen to make the wreaths and they did a terrific job. The
finished results looked amazing. The children were keen, cooperative, listened well and
worked with energy and enthusiasm (even at clean up time). Well done and thankyou to Abbey, Georgia, Rubi,
Keerthick, Kallom, Calab, Krisha, Mahrous, Steven, Michelle, Chloe, Carys, and Sienna. You should all feel very
proud of yourselves.
