The first three chapters of Ephesians present positional truth

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
You and Your Son Will Live!
4/19/15
4:48
Text: John 4:43-54
Main Idea: John wants us to believe in Jesus in all of his glorious
____________, as the all-powerful Son of God and the Savior of the world,
and not just “____ God.”
1. WELCOME MIRACLE WORKER, NOT MESSIAH (4:43-45)
4:43-44 After a ____________ harvest in a non-Jewish unclean
Samaritan land, Jesus returned to his Jewish homeland only
to be _____________ by most of his own people (John
1:11, 2:18, 2:20, 2:23-25)
 How do we view those “____” and “_____” who
have grown up in our midst, chosen to follow Christ,
have demonstrated faithfulness, and want to serve
Him?
 Are we in Lancaster County to ___________ with
Jesus that we are no longer blown away by Him?
4:45
The Galileans welcomed him as a miracle worker only, not
as the _________ of God like the Samaritans did (2:23-25).
2. DON’T BE JUST A SIGN SEEKER! (4:46-48)
4:46 Since the people in Cana previously only saw Jesus as a
miracle worker and not the Messiah (Wedding in Cana – Jn.
2:1-12), Jesus sees a ____ of the same thing in this man, but
will he end up that way?

“Official” means “Official of the _____” – This man
worked for Herod Antipas who killed John the
Baptist. He is not the same man as the Gentile
Centurion in Matthew 8:5-13 and Luke 7:2-10 where
Jesus healed his servant.

The gospel of our Lord knows no bounds. Jesus can
save a Jewish religious leader (Nicodemus), an
unclean Samaritan woman, and a worker for the
______________! He can save anyone!
4:47 Having either heard or seen Jesus work miracles, this man in
his desperation traveled 16 miles to repeatedly ____ Jesus to
heal his son.
 Unlike the centurion who demonstrated to Jesus
humility and faith, at this point and in his
desperation, he gives little thought to who Jesus is
and his power by thinking he must be physically
___________ to heal is sick son.
“You” is _________, so Jesus is responding to both the
official and the _________. Many people are “sensational &
sign seekers” only and miss who Jesus really is and want
only what they can get from him. Signs are meant to ______
to Him as divine, the Messiah, and as Savior! (Jn. 6:26, Acts
2:22, Mt. 12:38-39)
 This is the only time in this gospel that “wonders” is
used, focusing on “wonder seekers” who dishonor
Jesus. We must be cautious of over ___________
signs and wonders and miss Jesus (Mt. 7:21-23).
 It’s a test (Mark 7:27). “Unbelievers don’t love
God, they ____ God.” Give me only a miracle and
not the __________ of sin and salvation that leads
to saving faith (Luke 16:19-31). Will this man pass
the test?
3. MAKE SURE YOU ARE ALSO A SAVIOR SEEKER! (4:49-54)
4:49-50 In his urgent plea and request, the official was more
interested in his son’s well-being than signs and wonders
(like the others) and Jesus graciously and mercifully grants
his request, and at this moment with the Spirit’s help, the
official saw something _____ than a mere miracle worker
(John 2:11, 3:3, 4:29).
 Instead of continuing to beg Jesus to come, the
official ___________________, believed, and left
without seeing the miracle firsthand!
4:51-53 The precise timing lead to _________ faith for the
official, but not only him, his entire household. _________
has reached that house today!
4:54
Jesus did other signs (2:23), but this was the second sign
he did in Cana, ___________ that he was the gracious,
glorious and powerful Messiah from heaven above (Jn.
1:14).
