Happy New School Year!
One thing I love about being in education is
that things feel new every year, new faces,
new supplies, new books, new lives to inspire.
We are off to a great start.
At this time of year the teachers are spending time getting to know their students and
also assessing them to find out what they
know. Most grades are using a new program
called I-Ready to do a diagnostic assessment
on each child to find out where their
strengths lie and where there will need to be
further instruction. I-Ready is aligned with the
California State Standards and will be used
at every school in Roseville.
For the first time in a long time we also have
a new English Language Arts Curriculum
called Benchmark. Unlike previous programs
that were based on 5 day teaching cycle,
Benchmark uses a 3 week cycle which incorporates small group work with teaching and
targeted intervention every day. We are still
learning the program but are happy to have
a new reading curriculum.
One last "new" thing to mention is our music
program. With great support from the Roseville Foundation and the District, each school
has an elementary music teacher for grades
K - 5. Mrs. Dahl has already made her mark
on our kids, some of them are singing and
dancing during recess! It's a joyous sound!
A new school year is an exciting time and a
time of new beginnings. Here’s to a great
start to the school year, and to a powerful
new beginning for the students of Vencil
Brown! It’s a great day to be a Grizzly.

Constitution Day at Brown
School Site Council
We have a tradition of celebrating Constitution
Day at Brown by singing patriotic songs and hon‐
oring our parents who have military experience.
If you are interested in serving on a council that is
involved in the educational programs at Vencil
Brown School, then we have a position for you!
We are looking for three (3) parent candidates to
run for our School Site Council. All that is re‐
quired is a desire to be involved and a willingness
to meet once a month. Please submit your name
and a brief description of your interest in Site
Council to the office by Monday, 9/19/16. We look
forward to your active participation.
Please contact the office if you have any questions.
As defenders of our Constitution, we would like
to include any Brown parents with military expe‐
rience (active or veteran) who might be able to
come and join us wearing your uniform. It will be
held at 10 am on Thursday, Sept. 15th in front of
the Grizzly mural.
Please remind your Grizzly to wear RED, WHITE
and BLUE .
Canine Concerns
Dogs are everyone’s best friend! Unfortunately, School is not the place to
bring them during school hours, pick up
or on nights/weekends. This is to ensure the safety of all our students and
the cleanliness of our learning and play environment.
Thank you in advance for helping with this matter.
ATTENDANCE
Thank you for remembering to call in your
absences into the school office!
Attendance Fact: By ninth grade, regular and
high attendance is a better predictor of graduation
rates than eighth grade test scores
Attendance Tip: Develop back-up plans for
getting to school if something comes up. Call on a
family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
Celebrating Your Child's Birthday at School
Some of us have memories of sharing cupcakes with our classmates to celebrate childhood birthdays. It was
an exci$ng moment when we spied our mom walking through the classroom door with a box of treats. Times
have changed since then and schools have had to change in response. Our district has ins$tuted a wellness
policies for fear of food allergies as well as classroom disruption. All is not lost, there are still ways to recognize your child beyond cupcakes. Be sure to talk to the child’s teacher before you organize any birthday
recogni$on at school. Find out what day and what $me the teacher feels is best. You don't want the excitement of a birthday to interfere with classroom work.
Beyond Cupcakes:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Make a sign, crown, button or badge for the birthday child.
Come eat lunch with your child on their Birthday.
Ask the teacher if you could organize an art project that would be fun for the kids. Let the birthday boy or
girl choose the project.
Let your child choose a gi4 for his or her class. It could be a book for the library (write an inscrip$on inside), a word game for center $me, or a toy for the pretend play area. inscribing a birthday message inside the cover.
Pack goody bags with pencils, erasers, and other treats. The kids love fun school supplies, and it’s helpful
for teachers who o4en have to restock materials mid-year.
Send in something that all the kids can sign, like a white t-shirt, pillowcase or the cover of a notebook.
