To achieve and maintain the high standards set forth by this organization, all members should familiarize themselves with the regulations and procedures of the Band program presented in this handbook. It is hoped that some of the questions always prevalent with a Band will be answered in this handbook. If a question not covered in this handbook should arise, the Band Director should be consulted for further assistance. Philosophy Learning is a process, a transfer of information. We gain knowledge through concentrated study of information. In an age where transfer of information is increasingly important, it is crucial that an individual’s scope of knowledge be as thorough as possible. For personal education to be all encompassing, it is necessary to incorporate learning in all areas of intelligence. Music is one of the seven main human intelligences. It is the only aspect of learning that fully utilizes both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously. For that reason, musical knowledge and aesthetic appreciation is vital for the overall enhancement of holistic education. The philosophy of Comprehensive Musicianship involves an integrated process of all facets of music. The philosophy of this Band program adheres to the Comprehensive Musicianship approach in which students study music as composers, performers, listeners, and scholars within a positive learning environment. Objective The primary goal of this Band program encompasses a comprehensive approach to studying music through performance, analysis, and composition using the latest techniques and technology in music education and the music industry. Band students will acquire musical knowledge through the study of the essential elements of music. Band Class Students may or may not be allowed to participate in any co-curricular Band class activities in regards to the philosophy of the Monarch High School Band program, the requirements for membership, and the discretion of the Band Director. 3 Marching Band The Marching Knights is a combined force of the Concert Band and Color Guard. All members of the Marching Knights must be enrolled into the Marching Band or Eurhythmics class fall semester of the school year. Students must be able to participate in all aspects of the Marching Band including marching rehearsals, football games, parades, FBA Music Performance Assessment, competitions, and other outside performances at the Band Director’s discretion. Students will not have the option of choosing one element of Marching Band over another as they are all required for the course and part of the student’s grade. The Marching Knights will rehearse according to the following schedule: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday – 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM Tuesday, Friday, or Game Days – 1:00 PM – 2:40 PM Tuesday Nights – 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM * Extra rehearsals may be called on Saturdays for inclement weather make up or before a competition. Summer Band Camp Summer Band Camp is an intensive marching camp involving basic marching instruction and playing fundamentals as well as opportunities for Band and Color Guard students and parents alike to get to know one another. Part of the year’s show will be taught during band camp and will be crucial to the future success of the rest of the marching season. Attendance is mandatory of all members of the Marching Knights. (Those members who miss all or some of this camp will be put on alternate status at the discretion of the Band Director.) The Summer Band Camp schedule for the Marching Knights is as follows: Freshman Orientation Monday, July 30th from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM Week 1 Band Camp (All Grades) Tuesday, July 31st – Friday, August 3rd 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM Week 2 Band Camp (All Grades) Monday, August 6th – Wednesday, August 8th from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM & Thursday, August 9th – Friday August 10th from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM Two Night Rehearsals Tuesday, August 14th & Thursday, August 16th from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM 4 Color Guard/ Winter Guard The Color Guard is open to the student body by audition with flag, rifle, sabre, and dance. The Color Guard is an integral part of the Marching Knights and performs with the band throughout the year. The Color Guard must attend Band Camp as stated above. * Extra rehearsals may be called separately for the Color Guard at the discretion of the Instructor or Band Director. Winter Guard is an extension of Color Guard and students must go through another audition. Winter Guard is an indoor Guard that rehearses after school and competes on weekends. Extra fees are required to participate in the ensemble and are helped with fundraisers. More information will be available after marching band season. Concert Band The Concert Band is open to students with prior instruction in wind and percussion instruments or an audition scheduled with the Band Director. All members are expected and required to concurrently participate in Marching Band. Students are placed at the Band Director’s discretion where it will best benefit the ensemble. This class strives to incorporate all aspects of musicianship including listening, music theory, composition, improvisation, and performance. A student must sign up for Band for the spring semester during the school year. A student is required to participate in all after school rehearsals, performances, FBA Music Performance Assessment, and other activities at the Band Director’s discretion. Private study with an instructor is highly encouraged to all Band students. Jazz Band The Jazz Band is open to members of the Concert Band or other students outside the Band program at the Band Director’s discretion by audition. It is set up for a big band ensemble. The Band, more than any other school organization, can and should be influential in creating goodwill between a school and its community. Student conduct should be at its best at ALL TIMES!! Remember that the effective study and aesthetic enjoyment of performing music requires discipline and maturity!!! If there are any questions regarding these rules, please contact the Band Director for further clarification. Disciplinary Actions Consequences for infractions of expected classroom behavior (to be discussed during the first day of classes), will be in accordance with the policies of Monarch High School and the Student Conduct and Discipline Code Book and at the discretion of the Band Director. First Infraction – verbal warning 2. Second Infraction – verbal reprimand and detention with Band Director or School Detention. (This will include a lowering of Class Participation.) 3. Due to the fact that band is a performance based, co-curricular class, rehearsals and performances are an integral part of the curriculum, and part of the grading process. Sincere effort has been made to have the Band Calendar be given out far in advance for students and parents to plan doctor’s appointments, vacations, part-time jobs, etc. around this schedule. Excused Absences Except in cases of extreme emergency, illness, or death in the family, Band members will not be excused from any rehearsals or performances missed. In these cases, a note signed by parent or doctor is asked in advance if possible or upon return from the absence. If a student is ill the day of a rehearsal or performance please send an e-mail and follow up with a written note so the Band Director can make changes and substitutes. The written note must be in the Band Director’s hands within two days of the absence or it will be counted as unexcused and the time cannot be made up. Appointments or personal problems will be reviewed by the Band Director on an individual basis and approved. Appointments should be made on the days where there are no rehearsals or performances. Requests for missing a rehearsal must be submitted to the Band Director two weeks prior to the intended absence. Unexcused Absences Unexcused absences include any reason not listed above.
