Wichita falls ISD English I Lesson Planner Unit 6A: Synthesizing Genres Suggested Time Frame: 6 Days Objectives Skills: The student will be able to… Reading: Analyze non-linear plot development Determine the meaning of grade-level technical academic English words in multiple context areas derived from Latin words and affixes Writing: Write expository texts to communicate ideas and information to specific audiences for a specific purpose Revise drafts to improve style, word choice, and sentence variety Media: Analyze how words, images, graphics, and sound work together in various forms to impact meaning Lesson Information Activities Lesson 4A.1 (3 days): “A Sound of Thunder” Triplet Study Quick write activity: Write or project the following question on the board: “Would you visit the past if you could? If yes, where and when would you go and why? If no, what consequences of time travel would stop you from going back in time?” Vocabulary activity: Have students create a chart on a sheet of notebook paper with three columns labeled “Know Well,” “Think I Know,” and “Don’t Know.” Project the “A Sound of Thunder” vocabulary (word document) and have students place the words in the three columns. o Then select two volunteers and give each student a fly swatter. Have the students stand up at the board near the projected image while you read definitions for the words. The volunteers are to attempt to swat the correct word for the definition before their opponents. (Optional) Visit thinkcentral.com either as a class or individually using the keyword HML9-37 and visit the time line, author’s bookshelf, and notable quotes for Ray Bradbury. After, take the “Name Game” quiz as a class or individually. Reading activity: Provide students with a copy of the Analyze Sequence (worksheet) from the resource manager to help students keep track of the events in this non-linear story.
