BLACK SEA GRAIN MARKET REPORT powered by Russia’s Grain Export October 2012 – January 2013 In January, the Russian grain export continued to decline and dropped to 440 TMT (1128 TMT in December), of which 194 TMT of wheat (729 TMT in December), 53 TMT of barley (96 TMT), 138 TMT of corn (235 TMT). Russia’s cumulative 2012/13 (Jul/Jun) exports to the end of January (not incl. pulses) totalled 13.57 MMT (68.9% compared to the same period of 2011/12), of which wheat at 10.1 MMT (62.6% compared to the same period of 2011/12). Export of wheat, barley and maize by month in 2011/12 – 2012/13, 1000MT 3500 3000 2500 Wheat Barley Maize 2000 1500 1000 500 0 In January, the largest importers of Russian wheat were Turkey (45 TMT) and Kenya (44 TMT). Egypt, the main Russian wheat importer, didn’t make any purchases in January due to the execution of the recent contracts, signed with GASC (the Egyptian state buyer). Last time Russia won GASC tender October 31, when Egypt secured 120 TMT of wheat for 21-31 December shipment. The major driver of the decline in shipments is non-competitiveness of Russian grain on the world market. In January-February, domestic prices for milling wheat in the North Caucasus, which is the main export region, came close to $400/т (EXW), that $50-60/MT higher than prices for French wheat, FOB Rouen. Competitive prices for the Ukrainian corn are restricting Russian corn export. TheUkrainian corn is offered around $305-310/MT FOB. At the same time, South Russian processors were purchasing corn around $315-320/MT in January-February. Ruble rate also affected Russia’s shipments. Since mid-November 2012 to late January, the Russian ruble rose against the U.S. dollar approximately by 6% to 30 ruble/1 USD. February grain exports is seen at January level of some 400 TMT. For the first time, corn is expected to become the major exporting grain crop. In February, export can be marginally supported by the weakening of the ruble, which rate decreased to 30.6 ruble/1 USD by the end of the month, and by recent reduction of the domestic prices on the Russian market. 1 BLACK SEA GRAIN MARKET REPORT powered by Table.1 Wheat export, TMT Country of destination Total exports Non CIS Albania Greece Georgia Egypt Israel Jordan Iraq Iran Spain Italy Yemen Kenya Cyprus Latvia Lebanon Libya Lithuania Mauritania Morocco Mexico Mozambique unknown Nigeria Nicaragua UAE Oman Peru Sudan Tanzania Tunisia Turkey Uganda Ecuador South Africa The CIS Azerbaijan Armenia 2011/12 July June 21152,2 20457,7 281,7 271,9 339,9 7346,9 673,9 424,2 308,7 325,8 420,0 620,9 1089,9 717,2 19,9 107,3 312,7 580,4 18,4 88,4 160,8 0,0 113,5 7,4 34,0 74,9 228,6 62,4 152,9 251,8 196,8 387,8 3006,6 69,1 10,3 142,8 694,5 323,3 317,2 Jul.
