will be $7 each. More information to come on that.
I know it’s early but we have to start working on the 4th of July Raffle! We are in
desperate need of people to help with the raffle tickets and going out and finding
sponsors. If you would be willing to help us, please call me. Also, if you know

IMPORTANT!! On February 25th the 3rd District will be doing a Thundering
Third Membership Drive!! We are looking to set up tables at a couple of local
businesses to spread the word about the American Legion and possibly get more
members! Would you be willing to sit at a table for a few hours? Do you know
of any businesses that would let us set up a table? Let Joe or I know if you
would be willing to help out!!
Don’t forget about the Omelet Breakfast on the 12th!! Bring your honey to the
legion for some awesome food!!
All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt!

Greetings to all at Post 1776,
Welcome to all at Apple Valley Post 1776. What happened to winter? It’s
February already and the weather is not saying so. The shorter the winter
the better. February the 11th the SAL will be having meat raffles and horse
racing. Mark that date on your calendar and come on down to the Legion
and have some fun with us. All the money we earn goes to veterans and
their families. Also I would like to thank all the patrons and members for all
the toys that the SAL collected for kids. It was quite the success and we are
looking forward to next years project. For God and Country we stand tall!

Where does the money from Gambling go to is a very common question, so I
have worked up a Spread Sheet showing 11 of the most common expenditures?
This isn’t all, but I have the checkbook for any member to look at, and it will be
ready any time! This covers 1/2016 – 12/2016
VETERANS, SCHOOLS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CITY OF A.V. COMMUNITY,
SCOUTING, POST HOME, STATE GAMB., PAYROLL BASEBALL and
PULL TABS
That’s it in a nutshell; this gives you a small glimpse of what occurs with
Gambling Funds.
Shortly, I will be calling a meeting of past Commanders to go over a slate of
Officers for the upcoming year. Many vacancies this time around, if you have
recommendations or wish to be considered for a position let me know at

veterans News
Military.com is reporting that: “President Donald Trump announced he will nominate Heather Wilson, a
former congresswoman and Air Force Academy graduate, as the new Air Force secretary.
"Heather Wilson is going to make an outstanding secretary of the Air Force," Trump said in an
announcement.”
Also, “LAS VEGAS — A day after news broke here at SHOT Show that Sig Sauer had won a $580 million
contract to make the Army’s next service pistol, beating out three other competitors, the company has
released the first images of the winning gun.
The weapon replacing the M9 9mm handgun is Sig Sauer’s popular P320 model, a polymer striker-fired
pistol first released in 2014. According to an announcement released this morning, the Army’s Modular
Handgun System program provides for delivery of full-sized and compact P320s. Regardless of size, all
the handguns will be equipped with threaded barrels to receive silencers and will include standard and
extended-capacity magazines, according to the announcement.”

Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network (BTYR)
February 2017
The Apple Valley Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Network (BTYR) continues to serve both past
and presently serving Military, and their families. Some of our recent activities:
 The need is still there, so we continue to serve Veterans and / or their families. Last
month we helped with rent, car payments, gas cards, diapers, and burial expenses.
Some of our services are shared with other local BTYR networks. If you are in need
of assistance, know of a military family needing help, or if you can help provide
assistance, such as snow removal, ride to VA or an appointment, home repairs, or car repairs, etc.,
please contact us 952-923-5014.
 The monthly Military Appreciation Dinners are growing in attendance – 98 in January. The Legion
has provided excellent meals, which BTYR serves to Veterans at no charge. Most attenders
preregister, but we still have a number who do not – which causes a shortage of food. We ask
everyone to please RSVP [email protected] or leave a message on our phone 952-9235014.
 Our guest speaker in January was Kevin Price. He is the Army Reserve Recovery Care Coordinator,
helping injured service members with “paper work” to get through the System. Kevin works out of
Ft Snelling and can be reached at 612-979-6380.
 Our next dinner will be February 23. Doors open at 5:15 pm, dinner at 5:30 pm.
Upcoming Events:
1. February 2, 2017: General and Board meeting, 6:30 pm at AV American Legion Post 1776

What is the Preamble and What Does it Mean? (Part 9/11)
“TO PROMOTE PEACE AND GOOD WILL ON EARTH...”
Until all Nations in the world become good neighbors, Legionnaires must continue the effort to promote
peace and good will on earth. It is in pursuance of this founding ideal that The American Legion seeks
to strengthen the United Nations organization. Indirectly, The American Legion also contributes to this
ideal by firmly supporting a strong national defense to discourage breaking of the peace by aggressors.
Be Proud! We are the American Legion!
