Graduation Instructions

Dear Student:
Congratulations on achieving your goal at Joliet Junior College! The May graduation ceremony will be
held on Friday, May 12, 2017 in the Joliet Junior College Event Center at 6:00 p.m. Graduates must enter
the Event Center through the north doors no later than 4:45 p.m. where you will receive a name card, and
final instructions. There will be no graduation rehearsal. Please note there will be no reception following
the graduation ceremony.
In order to make the graduation ceremony a success please read the following:
 The Event Center doors will open at 4:30p.m. At that time, guests with tickets will be allowed to
seat themselves. Guests without tickets will be allowed any available seating in the Event Center
after the National Anthem.
 Guests are asked to arrive before 5:45pm. Guests arriving after 5:45pm will not be allowed to
enter the Event Center until after the graduates have been seated.
 Ladies are encouraged to leave purses at home or with one of their guests; no provision is made
for the security of purses. Additionally, you will not be allowed to carry a purse during the
procession.
 Graduates will be walking on AstroTurf and are asked to wear appropriate footwear.
 Graduates are not allowed to carry flowers during the processional and ceremony.
 Please note that balloons are not allowed in the Event Center.
 You will not receive your diploma or certificate at the graduation ceremony. If you have met all
the academic requirements and have no financial obligations with the college, you will be mailed
your diploma or certificate six to eight weeks after the semester is over.
Please read information regarding Important Graduation Instructions on the reverse side. This will
help to ensure an orderly and timely graduation ceremony.

IMPORTANT GRADUATION INSTRUCTIONS
Graduates must arrive at the Joliet Junior College Event Center no later
than 4:45 p.m. Friday May 12, 2017.
1. Graduates must check-in at the JJC graduation booth to pick up your name card. You will
be carrying this card throughout the processional and presenting it to the readers as you
approach the stage for your diploma cover. Without this card your name will not be
announced.
2. The name card is color coded. You will find your designated area by locating the sign
that matches the color of your name card. It is imperative that you remain in your
assigned space till the processional begins.
3. During the processional, your tassel is to hang over the right side of your cap. The cap is
to be worn with the short peak in the middle of your forehead and the top board parallel
to the ground.
4. Once in the Event Center and in your row remain standing until all graduates have
entered. Do not sit down until instructed to do so by the President of the college.
5. Please stand for the National Anthem. Men, please remove your cap.
6. Please stand when the Vice-President for Academic Affairs asks the graduates to rise by
degree or certificate for the conferral of degrees and certificates. Remain standing until
all graduates are standing.
7. The readers will ask all graduates to be seated, except the first row of graduates. If you
are not in the first row, please be seated. After the first row has received their diploma
cover the ushers will indicate when each row is to proceed to the stage to receive their
diploma covers.
8. After you have received your diploma cover and have had your picture taken, proceed to
the end of the stage. Once you have exited the stage you will have your picture taken
again and receive your gift from the JJC Alumni Association. Return to your row and
remain standing until instructed to sit by the ushers.
9. Remain seated until the conclusion of the ceremony at which time the President will
instruct you to stand. The President will ask you to move your tassel to the left side of
your cap and then to be seated.
10. For the recessional the stage party, faculty, administration and professional staff will
leave the field house first. Graduates will follow the ushers to the Event Center
Concourse and where they will be dismissed to join their families and guests. Please
remember no reception will follow the ceremony.
