THE FERTILIZER TUBES ATTACHED TO THE NUTRIENT PATCH WILL IMMEDIATELY MELT
ON CONTACT WITH WATER. KEEP THE TUBES COMPLETELY DRY UNTIL READY FOR USE.
H
ere’s How The Garden Patch Works:
The planter is filled with potting mix and the Nutrient Patch is centered on top of
the mix with the fertilizer tubes facing down. The plants (or seeds) are planted through
numbered slits cut down each side of the Nutrient Patch. Water moves up from the well
and the roots grow inward towards the fertilizer strip. The Nutrient Patch cover maintains
the correct moisture and temperature and prevents rain from washing away the fertilizer.
There's no need to mix or add any more fertilizer for the lifetime of those plants - they'll
constantly be fed, watered and nurtured. To insure success always grow with the Nutrient
Patch cover in place.

Let’s Get Growing!
To Start. Slide the flat 4 1/2 inch “grate” pieces from the parts kits down into both open ends of the
“ ” shaped walls in the bottom of the planter.
Join the top and bottom sections of the planter together with the spouts on the same side and FIRMLY
snap the eight posts in place at the bottom of the assembled planter.
Pour some potting mix into the top of the planter and fill and pack the two rectangular holes in the bottom
where the grates are. This is where the water will wick upwards. Add more potting mix until the planter is
about 1/2 full then thoroughly wet the mix with water. Be sure the potting mix makes good contact with
the mix in the rectangular holes below. A little mix may fall through the round holes in the bottom but that’s
OK. Finish filling the planter with potting mix flush with the very top rim, wetting it down as you go.
Ready to Plant. Un-fold the green Nutrient Patch. The fertilizer tubes are attached to the bottom and
numbered cutout slits are printed down each side. Keep the fertilizer tubes attached to the cover
and COMPLETELY DRY before use. Even the slightest amount of water will melt them!
Look at the Planting Guide Diagrams and decide what plants you want to grow and how many to
use. Use scissors to cut out one numbered slit for each recommended plant or seed.
When you're ready to plant, completely soak the top of the potting mix with water and IMMEDIATELY
lay the Nutrient Patch cover - tube side down on top of the wet soil. The flaps should extend evenly
towards the side of the planter and the fertilizer tubes should run down the center. Firmly press down on
top of the cover to sink the tubes into the wet soil. Carefully lift each side flap and spray water on the
sides of the fertilizer tubes. This will start melting the tubes to activate and release the fertilizer in a stripe.
To plant your plants, gently lift the side flaps of the Nutrient Patch cover and plant your plants into
the soil under the slits you cut out earlier. Plant them as deep as you would in the ground and close to
the planter sides. Add a little water around each plant to remove any air spaces from the roots. Replace
the flaps with the slit around each plant stem. Secure the cover by pushing the 4 spikes through the
cover and into the soil. That’s it; fill the water well from the outside spout and you’re done. (Don’t let
the well go dry!) The Nutrient Patch should stay on top of the soil for the entire growth period to
ensure that your plants grow healthy and productive!

PLANTING GUIDE Helpful Gardening Tips What to grow:
Your Garden Patch Planter will grow almost any vegetable, flower, herb or berry.
Check The Planting Guide for suggestions. A good rule of thumb is to grow what’s available at your
local nursery or garden center. If it’s sold locally, then the timing is right for it to grow locally.
Plants grow quickly in the Garden Patch so starting with smaller seedlings is actually better than larger
plants. Three to six-inch tall plants, sold in two-inch square pots transplant better and are usually less
expensive. Most vegetable plants need full sunlight for most of the day.

What type of soil to use:
Use a light and spongy POTTING MIX. Some National brands are Scotts, Sta-Green, Miracle
Gro, Jungle Growth, Lamberts, Fafards and Peters. Choose the lightest one – Brands with added
fertilizer are OK but potting soil and Garden soils are too dense. You’ll need about 1.5 cubic feet or
38 dry quarts /42 liters.
How to Mix and Match Plants
Different types of plants can be grown in the same Garden Patch Planter as long as the plants grow to
similar heights at about the same rate. Don’t let a large tomato vine choke out smaller peppers and
onions. Plant a variety of peppers, squashes or salad greens. Start with seeds if you want; feel free to
experiment. Almost anything you plant will grow happily and healthy in the Garden Patch!
When to Fertilize and Water:
Good news, the Garden Patch automatically adds all the fertilizer for you; up to 120 days – which is
about all most vegetable plants will effectively produce. For roses, ornamental shrubbery and perennials,
we suggest you replace the Nutrient PatchTM every 3 months. While rain will help water your Garden
Patch, it’s still a good idea to check the water level and never let the well go dry.
How to Replant:
Use the same potting mix 3-4 times before replacing. Cut off any remaining plants at the soil line.
It’s not necessary to remove the roots to start again. Discard the Nutrient patch and scoop out any
remaining fertilizer. Thoroughly wet the top of the mix, lightly till it and add more potting mix to fill
the planter to the rim if needed. Lay down a new Nutrient Patch and plant again. It’s that easy!
How to Store for the Winter:
More good news: Leave your Garden Patch Planters where they are. There’s no need to move them out
of the weather. Simply remove the used nutrient patch, scoop out the spent fertilizer and let Mother
Nature rinse and compost your soil for next season. Happy Garden Patch Gardening!
