MESSAGE FROM HONORABLE MINISTER OF
ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS OF INDIA
Shri. NITIN GADKARI
On behalf of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), I am pleased to dedicate the Indian Bridge
Management System (IBMS) at the 1st Biennial Conference on IBMS being held in New Delhi on 4-5 October,
2016. IBMS is the world's largest bridge database owned by a single owner with an inventory of over 120,000
bridges and culverts in the country.
IBMS, an integral part of our vision to create sustainable infrastructure, is aimed at creating a comprehensive
inventory of our bridge assets. This dedicated and intelligent system will ensure a seamless asset creation and
management with proper and timely distress diagnosis, repair and retrofitting.
Phase-1 of the project, which focuses on the National Highway network aims at Capacity Building making young
engineers technocrats to inspect and repair bridges under this project through a process of 'accreditation' by a
dedicated Center of Excellence.
The 1st Biennial Conference on IBMS is being held under the auspices of the Ministry. I fervently urge all State
Governments to depute their officers and take advantage of this unique gathering. I also take this opportunity to
appeal to the bridge fraternity to participate in this Conference and be a part of IBMS and Setu Bharatam.
I wish the organizers and the participants the very best.

IBMS 2016: SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Put your brand in the spotlight and benefit from the exposure and goodwill of being at
India's first conference on Bridge Management System
IBMS being implemented on the National highways is expected to yield a
database of bridge assets that require immediate repair/ rehab/ retrofitting or
replacement.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH) under Setu Bharatam
has earmarked over 30,000 crores for this purpose and the same was
officially announced during the launch of Setu Bharatam on 4th March 2016
by Shri. Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways in the
presence of Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi.
IBMS shall be providing data essential to kick start Ministry flag ship project
“Setu Bharatam” for which Ministry has already announced an outlay of over
`30,000 crores for rehab/ repair/ replacement of about 1500 old and distress
bridges on National highway network. All these bridges shall be identified by
IBMS based on the techno-socio- economic criterions by which the ranking
and priority of bridges is decided. Similar efforts are also likely to be
undertaken by various state governments as a response to the letter written
by Minister for Road, Transport & Highways to various Chief Ministers urging
them to set up IBMS in their respective states. This could cascade the
downstream project valuation to over ` 100,000 crores.
IBMS project also provides inputs to OD/OWC movement to decide which
route can be taken for such movement. Based on historical data available, such
corridors are identified for which requirements of corridor strengthening is
being evaluated. Major corridors will need strengthening to cater to increased
load movement. Such bridges will also undergo major rehab/ strengthening
works. All the downstream projects resulting out of IBMS will see a major
investment and capacity enhancement in many industry segments including
chemical manufacturers, cement manufacturers, bridge Appurtenance
industry, Bridge rehab specialist and Engineers. Most of these segments do
not have sufficient capacity to handle the project volumes as envisaged due
to IBMS.
IBMS 2016 invites leading manufacturers and service providers involved in
Bridge Engineering to be part of the event and benefit from the exposure and
goodwill of being at India's first conference on Bridge Management System.
