The name of the island comes from the Ainu language, "Repun" means "island in the open sea". Population size in this island is estimated 25,000 people. This island is also known for rich alpine flowers. Rebun belongs to the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. Basic Students aspiring to become researchers or regional experts engaged in the sustainable use of archaeological resources and indigenous heritage. This filed school is involving the subjects such as prehistoric archaeology, indigenous archaeology, zooarchaeology, physical anthropology, cultural athropology, ancientDNA, stable istope analysis. Specialists in various fields gather for this Field School and you would learn the newest investigative technique, the notes of research analysis, etc. This event would give a chance to debate discovery of a new subject or selection of a research theme through exchange of the students participating from North America, Europe and Canada, East Asia and Japan. This is also expected to encourage students to develop a vision for the future. By the end of this course you will be able to 1. acquire the basic knowledge and skill on excavation in the multi-layered shell-middent archaeological site. 2. acquire the basic knowledge and skill on research interview for local community members. 3. understand the recent theory and method on field archaeology. 4. understand the significance of a community-based field work. Students will learn the specific stratigraphic situation at the multi-layered shellmidden archaeological site including rich faunal and material remains form Jomon culture to the historical Ainu culture. 1. Introduction on Field School contents. Ice breaking. 2. Excavation of Shell-midden of Historical Ainu Culture (AD 15-18C.) and Okhotsk Culture (AD 7-10C.) . 3. Excavation of Jomon settlement (BC3500-) 4. Environmental research around Hamanaka sites 5. Lecture on Zoo-archaeology research techniques 6. Lecture on Ancient DNA sample survey 7. Lecture on Public archaeology and Indigenous archaeology. 8. Excursion inside Rebun Island, including Indigenous heritage and local place name in Ainu language. Homework You will be asked to write a page (A4 sized paper) of daily essay. Grading System Your grade will be determined based on your positive participation (50%) and reports (25%).
