Wichita falls ISD 5th Grade Math Lesson Planner Unit 3: Multiplication and Division Lesson 1: Multiplication Time Frame: 7 days Objectives Skills: The student will be able to… • Use Multiplication to solve problems involving whole numbers (no more than three digits times two digits without technology) • Use strategies, including rounding and compatible numbers to estimate solutions multiplication and division problems. TEKS Readiness: 5.3B, 5.3C, 5.10C Supporting: 5.4, 5.10B Process Skills: 5.14A, 5.14B, 5.14C, 5.15A, 5.15B, 5.16B Process Skills TEKS must be incorporated into instruction as appropriate throughout the school year. ELPS: 1C, 4I, 5G Performance Indicators: By the end of the unit the student will be able to… • use multiplication to solve problems involving whole numbers (with no more than three digits by two digits) and find area using the area formula. We recommend that this be taught after testing for the current school year. • Don’t forget if students have trouble lining up digits to have them turn the notebook paper sideways to help keep the rows of multiplication straight. • Area is included with Unit 3 lesson 3, but it would be help to include it with multiplication and division. TEKS gap alert: Use strategies and algorithms, including the standard algorithm, to multiply up to a four-digit number by a one-digit number and to multiply a two-digit number by a two-digit number. Strategies may include mental math, partial products, and the commutative, associative, and distributive property 2 Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts • • • Students may have difficulty visualizing rectangular arrays as models for multiplication. Students may understand the process of multiplication and division, but not know when to use multiplication or division for problem solving. Teacher needs to emphasize procedure for multiplication and division. Parent Resources • • • www.thinkcentral.com Use dominoes to practice multiplication. Have your child take two dominoes, read each domino as a 2-digit number, and multiply to find the product. Continue to practice multiplication facts.
