K
ilimanjaro is the first land mark to greet
visitors traveling by air to Tanzania. As
the plane crosses the Equator, the flat,
white top of the mountain is seen shimmering in
the atmosphere. It’s majestic bulk evokes the
words of Ernest Hemmingway in his book.
“ the Snows of Kilimanjaro” “As far as you
can see, as wide as the whole World, high
and unbelievably white in the sun, lies the
flat peak of Kilimanjaro” So wrote Ernest
Hemingway The snows of Kilimanjaro.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the crown of Tanzania. Rising abruptly from the open plains, Capped by
snow and frequently fringed by clouds, it is
one of Africa’s classic images. At 5,895 m,
it is the highest mountain in African Continent and the highest summit in the world that
can be reached by walking, without hand over-hand climbing. It’s also the highest freestanding mountain in the world. The mountain can be climbed any time of the year
although it is often wet in the rain forest during the rainy season in April and May. The
best period is from August to November.

K
nown as the "Whiskey" route”, the Machame route is now the most popular route on the
mountain. Compared with Marangu, the days on Machame are longer and the walks are
steeper.
The Machame route is considered a difficult route, and is better suited for more adventurous folks
and those with some hiking or backpacking experience.
The route begins from the south, then heads east, traversing underneath Kilimanjaro's southern ice
field before summiting. The minimum number of days required for this route is six days, although
seven days is recommended. The Machame route is scenically beautiful and varied. However, due
to the heavy crowds, it loses some of its splendor.
Acclimatization:
Acclimatization is extremely important, both to let you enjoy your ascent but more importantly to
avoid any serious complications.
TOUR TITLE - OHTL - 02 - MACHAME ROUTE. - TOUR LENGTH - 6 NIGHTS - 7 DAYS.
Day – 0 – Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where we are met on arrival and transferred to Arusha
Hotel formerly new Arusha Hotel. The Hotel is situated at the center of Africa half way from Cairo
and Cape Town for overnight (Bed and breakfast.)
Day – 1 – Arusha – Machame Village (1500m) – Machame Hut (3000m.) 18 km’s.
After breakfast, the day starts at dawn with a 01h45 minutes drive from Arusha to Machame village (1500m) where
you’ll be introduced to your porters and guides. While they
sorts out food and gear to be carried up the mountain, you
will receive a lunch pack from the guide and can buy your
own spring water in the village. Weather permitting; it is
possible to drive all the way up to the Machame gate
(1800m), however, if conditions are unsuitable for 4WD access to the parks gate the walk from the village to the
Machame gate takes about an hour.
Much in the same way as the other routes, when arriving at
the gate you must report to the Parks Office to fill in your particulars in the register. After all formalities have been taken care of, you head into the forest and begin the (07h00) seven-hour ascent to the first camp on the mountain. There is a strong possibility of rain in the forest and this
can transform the footpath into a very we, muddy and slippery, so special caution must be taken
when ascending the unusually slippery section. A bit of a breath comes halfway though the forest
when you stop for lunch and a short rest.
We strive to satisfy your requirements.—5
You’ll finally reach Machame Hut (3000m) quite late in the afternoon and there is the possibility of
mist or low clouds over the camp. But before you know it, porters have erected tents and preparing
your dinner, which will be served in the mess tent. Hot water for washing is provided in a basin,
but bear in mind that the tents are incredibly small so this makes washing and storing your gear
almost impossible, let alone sleeping.
Day – 2 – Machame Hut (3000m) – Shira Hut (3840m.) 9 km’s.
Early breakfast and weather permitting, you could take in your fist view of the Western Breach of
the mountain. The walk from Machame Hut to Shira Hut takes (06hr00) six hours and the footpath
heads up a ridge into the moor land.
Although the path is in generally good condition, it requires the occasional scramble before reaching the lunch stop at about (3600m.) After this short lunch break you continue up the rocky ridge
to the next camp. You’ll be able to see the Shira Needle, Shira Cathedral and East Shira Hill and in
an easterly direction the views of Western Breach with its respective glaciers. The porters will erect
tents, collect water prepare dinner, boil drinking and washing water before serving dinner in the
mess tent. Temperature at this camp is below freezing point and possible frost in the morning.
Day – 3 – Shira Hut (3Tower840m) – Barranco Hut (3950m.) 15km’s.
After breakfast you continue your trek eastwards into a
semi desert and rocky environment where you reach an
altitude of (4600m) at Lava Tower after a (05h00) fivehour walk. As you ascend from the Shira Hut there are
good views of the Shira Plateau to the west, Oehler
Ridge to the northeast and the Western Breach to the
east.
Lunch is served in a designated area before ascending a
rock and scree path to Lava Tower. Later descend slowly
a steep rocky path that joins the route to Barranco Hut.
The trek from Lava to Barranco Hut takes about (02h00)
two hours and offers great photo opportunities of the
beautiful landscape. Barranco is located in a valley below
the Breach Wall and Great Barranco Wall, this is the perfect place to collect good drinking water
that is found running off streams supplied by the melting snow and ice. While you wait for the
spectacular sunset on the Breach Wall, the porters erect tents and provide drinking and washing
water before preparing your dinner.
Day – 4 – Barranco Hut (3950m.)– Barafu Hut (4600m.)About 13 km's - Hiking: 7 hrs.
On this route you learn from the lizard when the mountain face becomes almost unrealistically
steep. This creature has a very careful climbing technique. Do likewise. Always use opposing legs to
force your body upwards – push left, pull right – this creates an axis that can be drawn diagonally
through the body, allowing you to freely move your right foot and left hand upwards against the
wall.
The morning starts with a scramble up the vertical Barranco Wall to an altitude of about (4200m.)
The path crosses through the south-western slopes to reach the Karranga Valley after (03h00)
three hours, where lunch is served. The last water stop on the route is Karranga valley, as there is
no water at all at Barafu Hut, you should take care to have stocked earlier along the way. After
lunch continue in a south-easterly direction to the junction before turning north to reach Barafu Hut
for about four hours.
Barafu Hut is situated on an exposed and dangerous ridge. It is necessary to familiarize yourself
with the terrain before dark to avoid any tragedies. Special care should be taken to move around in
this area with extreme caution as many fatal accidents have been recorded at the camp over the
years. As every other day the porters erect the tents and prepare dinner, while this is happening
you can arrange your gear for the summit bid towards midnight. Ensure that you replace your
headlamp and camera batteries.
We strive to satisfy your requirements. - 6
Day – 5 – Barafu Hut (4600m) – Uhuru Peak
(5895m.) Hiking time: 08h00 to Uhuru Peak - 7/8
hours to descend to Mweka - Distance: About 7 km's ascent
- 23 km's decent. At around midnight you will head in a
north-westerly direction up the South East valley towards
Stella Point on the Crater rim.
The night is very cold with the footpath rocky and steep in
places. The (06h00) six-hour long walk to Stella Point is a
mental and physical challenge with a steep face just below
Stella posing the ultimate challenge. Depending on the
weather conditions, you could encounter snow and ice from below Stella Point all the way to Uhuru
Peak; this stretch takes about an hour and offers great views of Rebmann, Decken, Kersten and
Heim Glaciers.
From Uhuru Peak you can also see Furtwangle glacier to the north and the Eastern Ice Fields to the
northeast; above all you are rewarded with just the most beautiful African sunrise. The time you
spend on the summit is determined by weather and wind conditions, these could cause temperatures to plummet well below minus –30 degrees Celsius. The walk back to Barafu Hut from the
summit takes over three hours and there you are able to have lunch and a short rest, collect the
rest of your gear before heading down to Mweka (3100m) the final camp.
There’s an element of intense concentration involved in climbing, where one is forced to shut out all
external stimuli and proceed at an altered state of consciousness where all that exists is the relationship between self and the environment. The reciprocal relationship also best expresses the initial appetite for planned climbing. The degree of danger associated with mountain climbing also
causes the body to vibrate with enormous enthusiasm.
There are also personal ethics involved in climbing. Each individual sets his own standards and
doesn’t pass judgment on what makes for a fulfilling jaunt. Without deliberately spelling out specific
rules for mountaineering, the knowledge of experienced climbers is an inspiration for danger- hungry adventurers. The power of mountains is phenomenal. You loose consciousness of your own detached reality and melt into the earth to become part of the universe; such experiences really enrich your life.
Day – 6 – Barafu Hut (4600m) – Mweka Hut (3100m.) - About 15 km's - Hiking time: 3
hours
The route to Mweka Hut is straightforward and takes about
four hours. You will head down the rocky, scree path into
the moorland and eventually into the forest – depending on
past and current weather conditions the footpath in the forest can be muddy and slippery.
The camp is on the upper border of the forest where rain,
mist or low clouds can be expected. Tents are erected and
soon afterwards a good dinner is served. Drinking and
washing water is also prepared on demand and spring water, soft drinks and beer are also available from the ranger at the camp. You will stay for overnight
at Mweka Hut before departing for the Mweka Park gate the next morning. (Note that now the
guides and porters expect to receive their tips at the camp before descending to the parks gate.)
Day – 7 – Mweka Hut (3100m) – Mweka Village (1450m.)
Early morning hearty breakfast before the three-hour long descent to the parks gate, there are
strong chances of the path through the forest being wet, muddy and slippery. After constantly slipping and sliding you eventually arrive at the Parks gate where your particulars are entered in the
parks register.
The guides are issued with green certificates for climbers who reached Stella Point and gold certificates for those who managed to reach Uhuru Peak. After all formalities are over, continue you’re

decent to the Mweka village where transport awaits to transfer you to the Hotel in Arusha where
certificates are presented during dinner. The drive takes about 01h45 minutes.
End of your trek.

Mahale mountains, like its northerly
neighbor Gombe Stream is home to some of Africa’s last remaining wild Chimpanzees, a population
of roughly 800, habituated to human visitors by a Japanese research project founded in the 1960s.

nights nests - shadowy clumps high in a gallery of trees. Scraps of half eaten fruits and fresh dung

Then suddenly you are in their midst, preening each other’s glossy coats in concentrated huddles,
squabbling noisily, or bounding in the trees to swing effortlessly between the vines. And while
Chimpanzees are the star attractions, the slopes support a diverse forest fauna, including readily
observed troops of red colobus, red tailed monkey and a kaleidoscopic array of colorful forest birds.
