WELCOME TO FIRST GRADE MATH! In this session you will be learning about what your child is doing in math and how their strategies will progress throughout the year. Building Numbers and Solving Story Problems (intro) Comparing and Combining Shapes (Geometry) How Many of Each? How Many in All? (Story Problems) Fish Lengths and Fraction Rugs (Measuring) Number Games and Crayon Problems (Story Problems) Would You Rather Be an Eagle of a Whale (Data) How Many Tens? How Many Ones? (Place Value) Blocks and Buildings (3D Shapes) MATH UNITS WE WILL BE TEACHING THIS YEAR WHAT ARE WE DOING NEXT? Our next unit we will be teaching addition and subtraction story problems. Students will learn to: • Unpack story problems • Write an equation • Pick an appropriate strategy for them • Solve the problem • Write the solution To unpack a story problem we read the problem line by line and search for important numbers and words. This is the most important step of a problem that helps students figure out if they need to add or subtract. LET’S TRY IT! Aubrey went to the store with her mom. She bought 7 apples and 5 bananas. How many fruits did Aubrey buy in all? Ms. Cor has 12 markers. She gave 8 of them to Ms. Fell. How many markers does Ms. Cor have left? HOW DO WE UNPACK A STORY PROBLEM? Counting all Counting on STRATEGIES FOR ADDITION Decomposing to make a 10 Decomposing to make a double STRATEGIES FOR ADDITION Drawing all Counting Back STRATEGIES FOR SUBTRACTION Decomposing to make a 10 Decomposing to make a double STRATEGIES FOR SUBTRACTION Using known equations Counting up STRATEGIES FOR SUBTRACTION WHAT STRATEGY SHOULD MY CHILD BE USING? We are encouraging students to use counting on or counting back strategies. When they have mastered these strategies and are double checking their work to make sure they didn’t make mistakes consistently they will be ready to move to decomposing. FUTURE MATH UNITS WILL INCLUDE: Comparing and Combining Shapes (Geometry) We learned the attributes of each shape and the names of shapes. How Many of Each? How Many in All? (Story Problems) How to solve different types of story problems. Fish Lengths and Fraction Rugs (Measuring) Measuring with different units of measurements and figuring out fractions (fourth and half). FUTURE MATH UNITS WILL INCLUDE: Number Games and Crayon Problems (Story Problems) Addition and subtraction story problems. Making combinations to a specific number. Would You Rather Be an Eagle of a Whale (Data) Graphing data on a bar graph. Comparing data. How Many Tens? How Many Ones? (Place Value) Grouping tens to learn place value. How many tens and how many ones are in a number. Blocks and Buildings (3D Shapes) Identifying and describing 3d shapes. QUESTIONS?
