Creating a Metal Cold Cast Using Smooth Cast 325 Clear Resin SCULPTURE SUPPLY CANADA 345 Munster Avenue Toronto, Ontario M8Z 3C6 There are different techniques used to achieve a metallic finish with urethane resin. "Metal Cold-Casting" is a term used to describe the process of mixing metal powder with a resin and applying the mixture into a mold. The finished casting gives the appearance and weight of solid metal. The metal cold-cast process is faster and much less expensive when compared with foundry casting of molten metal. Different metal powders such as Bronze, Brass, Copper and Nickel Silver can be used depending on the desired effect. Materials Needed: Bronze Powder - Recommended metal powder mesh size for mixing with resin is -325. Casting Resin - Smooth-Cast 325 works best as it readily accepts metal powders and/or color pigments because of it’s semi clear amber color. Liquid Pigment - Adding So-Strong black tint to the resin/bronze powder mixture will give the final casting added definition and dimension. The mixing ratio can be as low as 1A : 1B : 1 Metal Powder. Using more metal powder gives the finished casting greater weight thereby simulating the weight of real metal castings. Step-by-step instructions: 1. Dispense equal amounts of part A, part B and metal powder by volume into separate measuring containers. 2. Add color pigment to part B and mix thoroughly (Approx. 2% parts by weight). 3. Combine part A and part B in a clean mixing container - Mix well for 30 seconds. 4. Sift in Bronze Powder to the resin and mix all components for 30 seconds. 5. Apply first coat - Pour mixture into mold cavity and brush mixture over entire mold cavity. The objective is to coat mold surface thoroughly until mixture begins to cure. 6. Backfill - Mix Smooth Cast 325 resin and black pigment, this will be used to fill the cavity. Entire casting should be thoroughly cured before demolding, wait 30 minutes and demold. For best results, first wipe down the entire surface of the model with a towel soaked in mineral spirits. This will soften the plastic slightly and make it easier to bring out the metal shine. Buff the finished casting with steel wool and the process is complete. Bronze Brass Copper Nickel Silver www.sculpturesupply.com • 1-866-285-5509
