Literary Devices Song Assignment
Assignment: You will analyse the lyrics of a song as poetry. You will look for the use of the
poetic and literary devices that you have learned in class.
Step 1: Choose a song. Be sure that it is a song that is appropriate for school (no vulgar or
offensive language, or over-emphasis on violence or sexual themes). To earn maximum points,
you will have to be able to identify at least five (5) poetic devices in your song.
Step 2: Song Lyrics: Format and provide a copy of the lyrics for your chosen song.
Use the following format:
“Song Title”
Name or Performer and/or Writer of Song
Song Lyrics – with proper spacing; and contain no extra characters or images
Step 3: Lyrics Analysis: On a separate page, cut and paste the lines from the song and identify at
least five (5) different literary devices.
You are to label and underline, circle, and/highlight the words or lines that give an example of a
poetic term.
Step 4: Submit your labeled song lyrics before the day of your presentation in order to provide
your classmates with a handout. If you fail to submit this before your due date, you are
responsible of printing copies at your own expense.
Step 5: Presentation
Explain your analysis of the song, including all the information from your handout. You will
need to play your song as part of the presentation.
