Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants Members’ e-Handbook Cover Instruction Sheet Do I need to uninstall the previous version of the e-Handbook first? 1. Having multiple versions of the e-Handbook on your PC/Notebook at the same time will cause confusion and unnecessary errors. We strongly recommend that you uninstall the previous version by using the ‘Uninstall’ function embedded in it. This ‘Uninstall’ function can be started via the Windows ‘Start Menu’ – ‘Program Files’ – ‘e-Handbook System’ – ‘Uninstall’. Do I need to install the e-Handbook onto my computer to view the statements? 2. You have the option to view the statements by starting the e-Handbook directly from the CD-ROM. However, we do not recommend that you do this as the CD-ROM is not writeable (i.e., no update can be done to the CD-ROM). Besides, response time will be much slower if you run the e-Handbook from the CD-ROM. What are the advantages of having the e-Handbook installed onto my computer? 3. Besides faster response time, you will benefit from the e-Handbook’s Smart Update function which provides you with an easy and convenient means to keep your Handbook up-to-date through Internet. That being said, Internet access is not required if you just want to view the statements from your hard disk. The Installation wizards offer me the option to install Acrobat Reader V.6.0.2. What benefits will Acrobat Reader V.6.0.2 bring? 4. All statements in the e-Handbook are in portable document format (PDF). As such, Acrobat Reader (a free licensed reader from Adobe) is required for viewing the e-Handbook. For best performance, Acrobat Reader V.6.0.2 with the corresponding Chinese Font Pack is recommended. The option to install Acrobat Reader V.6.0.2 and the corresponding Chinese Font Pack is included in the installation wizards. If you have yet to install Acrobat Reader V.6.0.2, or you have only installed an earlier version of Acrobat Reader, we strongly recommend that you install Acrobat Reader V. 6.02 and the corresponding Chinese Font Pack during the installation process. If you have already installed a full version of Adobe Acrobat, please note that the Adobe Acrobat will take over the control of any other version of Acrobat Reader already installed on the same machine, regardless of its version. If this happens, Acrobat Reader V.6.0.2 that you may have already installed will be unable to function when you are running the e-Handbook. In addition, having multiple versions of Acrobat in the same PC/Notebook will slow down the system performance by a very big margin. Please also note that Acrobat Reader V6.0.2 only runs on machines with Windows 98 OSR2 or higher. For machines running on Windows 98 OSR1 or lower (e.g. Windows 95), Acrobat Reader V.5.0.5 or lower should be used. For the sake of convenience, Acrobat Reader V.5.0.5 is already embedded in the CD-ROM just in case you may need it. Getting Started 5. The installation wizards will start automatically once the CD-ROM is inserted into your CD-ROM drive. If the program does not start automatically, please follow the steps below to start the installation: a. Double click the ‘My Computer’ icon on your computer; b. Select the CD-ROM drive; c. Double click the program ‘AutoCD.EXE’; d. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process. If you decide to install the Acrobat Reader V.6.0.2, please do so before installing the e-Handbook system.
