A small lecture classroom featuring a graphic wall displaying
names of indigenous tribes.
CLASSROOM | |
A large collaborative and modular classroom featuring a graphic wall displaying a timeline of
colonization in the Amazon Rainforest.
The colors chosen for our logo and design were inspired by four important
elements of the Amazon Rainforest. Orange represents the color of the
dwellings that the indigenous peoples live in, called “malocas”. Red
represents the color of the face paint that the indegenous peoples adorn
during ritual ceremonies. Green represents the vast flora within the
rainforest and blue represents our primary source of inspiration,
the rivers and water cycle.

Concept Statement
At the heart of the Amazon Rainforest lies its most valuable
resource: its rivers. The Amazon River, among others, provides over
20% of the fresh water to the oceans (Fonatana et al., 2000). This fresh
water provides sustenance for the local flora, fauna and the indigenous
peoples of the Amazon. However, its most valuable resource is also its
most vulnerable.
The rivers, an essential part of the water cycle and ecosystem
providing life for the Amazon Rainforest, are being disrupted by the
construction of dams including the Belo Monte Dam (Marzec, 2014). The
rivers are the pulse of the rainforest. Without that pulse, all life in the
Amazon Rainforest remains in jeopardy.
Thus, this research has inspired the theme in which our team has
based our design concept: the water cycle. Our design will ebb and flow as
the waters, smoothly integrating sustainable design concepts such as using
rapidly renewable materials, locally sourcing materials and inspiration from
LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) practices.
Just as the water cycle provides sustenance for the living beings in
the Amazon Rainforest, from the plants to the indigenous peoples, H2GO
orientation and education facility will provide sustenance for the minds of
those readying themselves for service-learning and adventure in the Amazon
Rainforest.

The manufacturer chosen for this project was Steelcase because of
their emphasis on LEED certification in the design of their products.
Steelcase’s designs consider the entire life cycle of their products–
materials extraction, production, transport, use and reuse throughout
the life of the product and at the end of the life cycle.
Steelcase also offers programs to extend their product’s life cycle
making them the ideal choice for furniture selection within our design.

In order to foster future partnerships with other educational facilities,
our team has chosen a site adjacent to the University of Miami in between the
main campus and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.
This location is ideal because it will promote the efforts of the facility to young
and impressionable college students and will foster future partnerships with the
University of Miami itself. This could result in offering class credit to students
who embark on the service learning experiences in the Amazon Rainforest. The
facility could also utilize the university’s resources to foster their own growth and
exposure. The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science is one of the
leading oceanographic and atmospheric study institutions across the nation (About
the Rosenstiel School 2016). It could serve as a place for hands on demonstrations.
Save the Amazon will be more than just a program for the community; they will build
the education of new generations about the worldwide importance and global impact
of the Amazon Rainforest.
Our team has also chosen this site due to its location in relation to the
surrounding parks. The Everglades National Park and the Biscayne National Park
are less than a 45-minute drive from the site we have selected. Both of these national
parks could serve as prime locations for hands on demonstrations. The Everglades
National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States (Everglades
National Park, 2016) while Biscayne National Park offers a combination of swamps,
islands, and a coral reef with over 10,000 years of human history (Biscayne National
Park, 2016). These factors are what make the site our team has chosen ideal for the
future success of H2GO education and orientation facility.
