Golf Rules made Simple and Humorous
Last Month's Question and Answer
Last month I gave you a trivia question instead of a rules question. Believe it or not, no one took the bait to
answer the question. I thought for sure with all of the holiday merriment, that someone would take the
time to actually count the dimples. Here was the question.....
How many dimples are on a golf ball and are they all the same size? Why don't we play with smooth golf
balls?
Answer
Rather than actually count every single dimple on a golf ball, I took the advice of Bob Thurman, who tests
and designs golf balls for Wilson Sports. He says a golf ball usually has anywhere from 330 to 500 dimples depending on which company designs the ball. The dimples help the ball travel farther and higher.
Dimples first appeared on golf balls more than 100 years ago when golfers discovered that balls which had
been scratched or roughed up traveled farther than smooth balls. "Dimples are what gives a golf ball lift.
They create two layers of air going around the ball. The top layer is going faster than the bottom layer which
creates turbulence. This reduces the drag and allows the ball to travel farther than a smooth ball".
Different companies have designed golf balls with different numbers of dimples to allow the ball to travel
farther. This is quite a science and involves weeks of testing and retesting. Companies can even design golf
balls to suit the swing of individual golfers. So a ball used by Tiger Woods might have a completely different
dimple pattern than one used by David Duvall. The ideal ball will usually have between 380 and 432 dimples.
So how many dimples are on your chosen brand of golf balls and is it the right ball for you?
January's Rule Question
A player, unable to find her ball, puts another ball in play (without stating that it is provisional). She then
discovers that her original ball is actually in the hole. What is the ruling?
Submit your answers to [email protected] or go to the ewgadayton.com webpage and enter your
question under the Resources Tab and Select "The Golf Guru". Points will be awarded for all correct answers submitted during the 2012 season (starting in October 2011). There will be a prize for
the most correct answers at the end of the season. Now get out those rule books. The correct
answers should reference the applicable USGA rule.
It is certainly more fun to address real-life situations. (The funnier the better!) If you have a
real-life example, submit it to [email protected] for the next issue of the newsletter.
IT'S TIME TO PLAY "RULE-ETTE"
Do you know where I am if I gave you the following clue:
"The only golf course on the island of Tonga has 15 holes,
and there's no penalty if a monkey steals your golf ball!"
If your team is confident and answered "Greece," you would
have earned 10 points; however, if you were incorrect, the
other team would have the chance to steal your points. If
your team was unsure, you could have elected to receive
additional clues such as "This country was also a famous
John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John movie, or what you
may get on your knees when cleaning out the garage." If
you then answered "Greece," you would have earned only
5 points. This was only one of the 25 questions asked and answered during our first EWGA education
event which was held on Sunday, 29 January 2012, at Park Hills Crossing, Fairborn, OH.
The room was buzzing as the "contestants" entered the gaming arena and were met by Kathy Garrison and
Cheryl Davis. We spent about 30 minutes getting reacquainted with members we haven't seen over the
past couple of months and enjoyed some wraps, chips, cookies, and beverages.
To begin with, we started off with our first door prize drawing--a
$25 Gift Certificate from Carver's (donated by Tudor Financial).
Next, two teams were formed based on your door prize tickets-Even numbers against the Odd numbers. The rules were
explained and the categories described as clearly everyone was
unsure what "OB-GYN" had to do with golf. And the categories
were: OB-GYN (Out-of-Bounds--Guess Your Number--all
answers would be a number); HANDY CAP (Questions pertaining to Handicap); "TEE" WORDS (All
responses would include either "tee" or "tea" in the responses); RULE-ETTE (this could be either a rules
or etiquette question); and TRIVIA (this could be anything pertaining to the game of golf).
We alternated between the two teams--one player from the "Even Team" would come up and give the
wheel a spin to see what their question would be. The Even Team would then have the choice of either
playing or passing depending on the difficulty of the question with "1s" being the easiest and "5s" being
the hardest. Once a question was asked, the Even Team had a few seconds to come up with an answer
some discussions. If the Even Team answered correctly, they were awarded the respective points; if not,
the Odd Team had the chance to steal the points. Then it was the Odd Team's turn and they would also
spin the wheel and try to answer a question correctly. If not answered correctly, the Even Team would have a chance to steal the
points. Needless to say, our EWGA members are very competitive. You had to be very careful how you answered the questions
because as you know, I just can't have anything that simple and did
throw in some trick questions as well as True or False answers and
multiple choice questions. After all, you do have to keep everyone
on their toes! And just to whet your appetite for future educational
events, I have included some of my favorite questions and answers
for each category.

In stroke play, Mary is searching for
her ball under a tree. Mary accidentally
moves her ball with her foot and at the
same time loses her balance and breaks
a branch, improving the area of her
intended swing. How many penalty
strokes does Mary take?
In a handicap match, Jessica is entitled
to 2 handicap strokes at 2 Par 3 holes
because she is playing against Sandy.
Jessica scores a 2 on the first Par 3 and
then has her first hole-in- one on the
next Par 3. After bragging rights, what
would Jessica's net scores be for each
Par 3?
Person who provides education--say
someone like our President--Karen.
2 Strokes. Mary has breached 2 rules (182a is a one stroke penalty and 13-2 is a two
-stroke penalty) and the more severe of the
two penalties must be applied. Maybe
Mary should join the circus instead.

Jessica would receive a 0 on the first Par 3
and -1 for the hole-in-one and probably
would never get to play with Sandy again.

This is a multiple choice question. Tara
is putting on the green and her ball hits
the flag stick and drops into the hole.
What does Tara do next?
After Tara is done celebrating:
5
a) Celebrate making the putt
b) Give yourself a one stroke penalty
c) Take the putt again
The longest golf course in the world is
the par 77 International Golf Club
which measures a fearsome 8,325
yards. Which state is it located in:
Texas, Massachusetts, or Vermont?
(b) Give yourself a one-stroke penalty.
Massachusetts
(The most popular guess was Texas since it
is fairly large state--this was one of my
trick questions)

And to make it even more interesting, there was a bonus question worth 25 points in case of a tie or really
close game. "I am looking for the "common" number for this bonus question. How many dimples are on
a golf ball? And if you know the exact number, you are spending way too much time on the computer and
not enough time on the golf course. However, I will give you a range of between 300 and 500." And the
Common number is "336."
The final score was 115 points to 100 points. And the winners are: the Even Team!!!!!
The winners received a gift bag containing a golf ball, golf tees, an instant lottery ticket, and a lucky shiny
new penny to scratch off their tickets. Hey, Tara won something! And the rest of the winners are: Sandy
Hentges - $25.00 J Alexander's Gift Certificate; Karen Puthoff - $25.00 Carver's Gift Certificate; and Jessica
Chilton - Lottery Tickets.
And to round out the afternoon, thank you to Kathy
Garrison and Cheryl Davis for handling the registration
table and 50/50 tickets; thank you to Mary Rice for being
the official photographer, thank you to Angie Degenhart for
the use of her clubhouse; and a special thank you to Tudor
Financial for providing the gift certificates. I can't wait to
see the educational video to be shown at the March kickoff.

Congratulations, Mary Jo Wiley!!!!
At the Irongate Annual Award Breakfast, Jan. 16, 2012, Mary Jo Wiley
was one of three recipients of the Community Service Award for her
volunteer work with junior golf. Mary Jo Wiley is currently the vicepresident of The Greater Dayton Youth Golf Academy (GDYGA), a nonprofit organization founded in 1989. Its all-volunteer staff teaches girls
and boys from age 8 to 18 to play golf and to have the integrity,
courtesy, and mental discipline found in learning the game of golf.
The GDYGA welcomes children of all races, creeds and economic backgrounds. They learn
the rules of the game, the customs and courtesies on the course, respect for the individual, and
to always be supportive of another's best efforts.
Lessons are taught by knowledgeable, volunteer instructors with the help of Dayton area
PGA and USGTF professionals, and support from the City of Dayton facilities, allows for practice
and learning year round.
The Dayton Chapter of the EWGA recently joined with the Greater Dayton Youth Golf
Academy for its 3rd Annual Junior Girls Outing in 2011. Girls twelve and over were partnered
with EWGA Dayton members to enjoy 9 holes of golf followed by lunch.
Much work goes into providing these valuable experiences for our young people. Thank you,
Mary Jo, for your tireless efforts in this very worthwhile organization!!!
