The level and scientific potential made it one of the biggest and most dynamic academic institutions in the north-eastern part of Poland. In the year 2013 the students of natural and mathematical sciences will be able to start their education in a modern and well-equipped campus. This is the biggest investment in the history of the UwB. The UwB is comprised of ten faculties, with a satellite department in Siedlce and a foreign faculty in Vilnius. The University educates 18,000 students in almost 30 fields of study. It offers 90 different postgraduate course. The student movement is thriving: there are about 70 student research clubs at the University. UNIVERSITY OF BIALYSTOK ul. M. Skłodowskiej-Curie 14 15-097 Białystok Rector’s office: tel. 85 745 70 01, fax 85 744 77 49 [email protected] Head office: tel. 85 745 70 00, fax 85 745 70 73 [email protected] www.uwb.edu.pl In 2010 and 2011 the University of Bialystok was ranked third in the competition “The most innovative and creative institution of higher education in Poland”. In 2011 the UwB was awarded the certificate “University of Leaders” by the Foundation for the Development of Education and Higher Learning. The competition promotes institutions of higher learning which invest in the job market-oriented education and care about the practical education of students. Moreover, a lot of academic teachers and students may boast individual prizes and distinctions. In recognition of great merits in the field of science as well as social and political life, the University granted the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to ten eminent personalities including: Ryszard Kaczorowski, Jerzy Giedroyć, prof. Andrzej Stelmachowski, prof. Andrzej Wyczański, Metropolitan Sawa, prof. Marcel Morabito, Białystok Metopolitan prof. Edward Ozorowski, prof. Keiichi Yamanaka, prof. dr. hab. Brunon Hołyst and prof. dr. hab. Jerzy Wilkin. Mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology are essential for knowing the rational Truth - the Truth about Life and Universe. The idea of their interpenetration and creation of Synthesis is the imperative of the 21st century. It is suggested that the construction of the above-mentioned science departments and institutions buildings be subjected to this idea. The four streets of Oneness cross to create the square of symbolic Sciences Synthesis. Four glass entrance portals with diode surfaces and four glass annexes placed at 4.2 m over the ground floor flooring, propped up on thick round glass cylinders (rust – proof steel structure), create the “information” walls of the square. On each portal, annexe or signpost information about the events key to a given scientific field may be projected. In the centre of the concrete flooring, emphasized by a division, there is shallow water – a puddle with a huge glass sphere, always kept moving by a stream of water. The square space seems to flow between the cylinders and escape through the “closing” gates into the indefiniteness of knowledge about: ....the life of plants (trees on the building of Science), life of people (Sun Square) and energetics of mechanisms created by them (car park). The Mathematics, Physics and University Cultural Centre buildings are the beginning of the Sun Square whose a priori glass facade (transparent in the low belt and highly reflective in the upper one) and the model of Solar System remind us of the determined relationships and common Origin of Nature and Culture. The a priori, unified form of Oneness, Synthesis of Sciences Square and Sun Square streets is juxtaposed with the spontaneously arranged spaces of four yards whose forms are shaped by room purposes. Description by prof. Marek Budzyński, Campus Architect 1 dr hab. BEATA GODLEWSKA-ŻYŁKIEWICZ, prof. UwB Vice-Rector for Research and International Cooperation EXPANDING THE BOUNDARIES OF KNOWLEDGE We are pleased to present you with the publication whose aim is to show you the potential of the University of Bialystok academic staff, scientific research, international cooperation and cooperation with regional entrepreneurs and institutions. We hope that this university prospectus will give you an overview of the University academic programmes and services, and inspire you to join scientific research and activities for the benefit of our regional community. Over the fifteen years of its independent existence, the University of Bialystok has become a dynamically growing institution of higher education, the largest in Podlasie, both in respect of the number of research workers, fields of study and forms of education offered as well as the number of students and graduates. Our university incorporates the idea of European university – teaching through the prism of scientific experiments. Didactic potential The university is composed of 10 Faculties, including a foreign one in Vilnius. A wide variety of educational programmes is provided in 25 fields of study and over 60 specialisations, taught according to the three-cycle degree structure. The major fields of study offer unique and inter-faculty courses created to meet the social demand. The curricula are constantly developed and updated, with a special emphasis on their interdisciplinary character. There are several projects implemented under the Human Capital Operational Programme, including: Modern and effective education in cooperation with entrepreneurs, Education and practice - key to the future as well as Designing and implementing legal English curriculum with application of innovative educational materials. The University also offers a range of the so-called specially tailored progammes of study. All the fields of study have been accredited by the State Accreditation Committee, and the field of chemistry has received the European accreditation, that is the Eurobachelor label and Euromaster label, approved by the European Chemistry Network Association (ECTNA). Moreover, the Faculty of Economics and Management has implemented the System of Quality Management for managing students’ education processes, scientific research as well as expertise and research activities in economic studies, certified by the Polish Centre for Accrediation. The university offers more than 90 postgraduate courses increasing students’ skills and abilities as well as granting new competences. It also has the right to confer the postdoctoral degree of doctor habilitatus in law, economics, biology and history. The doctoral programmes are run at five university faculties. The scientific staff at the University of Bialystok conduct scientific research at international level, both in natural and exact sciences as UNIvERSiT y of BIAlYSTOK young | dynamic | with perspectives 2 Development of infrastructure well as in humanities and social sciences, not only expanding the boundaries of knowledge by making discoveries, but also by providing expertise and experience to the whole region of Podlasie. The works connected with the unique nature and cultural diversity of the region should be especially emphasized. The academic staff include scholars known for their scientific achievements in Poland and abroad as well as professionals related to the world of business. The University of Bialystok cooperates with institutions of higher educations in the majority of European countries. Joint research and undertakings are done under over forty contracts with foreign partners. Numerous international secondment and exchange programmes for academic staff facilitate modern approaches to the education of young people. The international cooperation is also held under over a hundred bilateral agreements the University of Bialystok has signed with the European institutions of higher education within the framework of the LLP-Erasmus programme. An essential element of international cooperation is a joint organisation of conferences and symposia by the University of Bialystok and other research centres as well as a member of educational consortia responsible for implementing different scientific programmes. Some of them are regular events gathering scholars also from outside Europe and promoting our university abroad. The 30-year conference focusing on the application of geometric methods in physics called Workshop on Geometric Methods and International School of Physics and Condensed-Phase Chemistry are worth mentioning here. The University’s success was also its participation in the 6th and 7th European Union Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities. Beneficiary of European funds The membership in the European Union opened new possibilities of financing Polish scientific activities, also by making use of the European Union structural funds. Currently, the University of Bialystok is implementing 18 projects within the framework of Operational Programmes, including 11 projects under the Human Capital Operational Programme and other EU grants. Participation in these programmes allows for expanding the University as well as establishing and modernising its teaching and research facilities. The University Library is currently the most advanced scientific library in the region. Fully computerized, it offers free access to over 500,000 printed volumes and internet resources, enabling online access to library catalogs as well as computer-based information and bibliography systems abroad. The reading rooms meeting the 21st century standards and special individual study rooms serve the students and academic staff from the whole region. The library is also a culture-making institution organizing open exhibitions, lectures and meetings with prominent guests. It also seeks to popularize science by offering, for instance, a series of lectures on Podlasie in scientific research delivered by the University of Bialystok employees. The current strategy of University development is centred on enlarging the University premises. In 2011 the construction of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Faculty of Physics, Institute of Biology and Institute of Chemistry buildings started. The University campus will hold multimedia-equipped rooms, lecture halls, seminar rooms and specialist workshops and laboratories. The project funds will serve to purchase specialist research equipment, which will allow for modernising the scientific facilities of the University. The University Computing Centre will become a computation base for the whole University, a scientific research centre as well as a research development and implementation centre. The basic task of the Centre will be to collect and give access to computing resources in the form of high-capacity computers, specialist software and data storage devices to the university research staff. The University Cultural Centre will house student organisations, a café and a concert hall. The Prof. Andrzej Myrcha University Museum of Nature will gain space to exhibit its collected items, whereas the university campus will have educational trails with, for instance, a lapidarium with erratic boulders from the Pleistocene glaciations in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, enriched with glacial plant relics as well as a special trail showing different stages of life on Earth in the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras. The University authorities are committed to sustaining high standards of performance and the continuing professional development of its academic staff. The guarantee of our growth is an enormous involvement and professionalism of the academic staff and energy of our students. Joint activity is the only policy for the University to maintain its stability and increase prestige. 3 biol-chem.uwb.edu.pl FACULTY OF BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY First degree courses BIOLOGY specialisation: Experimental and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Environmental Management, Microbiology; CHEMISTRY; NATURAL ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION Second degree courses BIOLOGY specialisation: General and Molecular Biology, Environmental Biology; CHEMISTRY; NATURAL ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION Doctoral programmes in Biology Postgraduate courses Contemporary Methods of Chemical Analysis; Management of Chemical Laboratory; Chemistry; Inter-Faculty Postgraduate Studies: Nature – Education Stage IV Pogodna 65, 15-399 Białystok, tel. +48 85 745 71 40, fax +48 85 747 01 14 [email protected] The Faculty consists of two units: the Institute of Biology directed by prof. dr hab. Partial synthesis and structural analysis of natural products and their biologically active analogues Chemistry of natural products and synthesis of their biologically active analogues based on modern methods of organic synthesis is a major field of research, having not only scientific merit but also potential practical applications. Especially promising are the results of studies on the synthesis of OSW-1 saponin and its analogues which show cytotoxic activity against selected malicious cancer cells, even at nanomolar concentration. The research on synthesis of vitamin A analogues based on olefin metathesis reactions may also have practical applications. The cross metathesis reactions of natural polyenes with various olefinic partners in the presence of ruthenium metathesis catalysts are studied. The metathesis reactions are also used in the synthesis of other natural products, e.g. steroidal sapogenins and for constructing molecular machines (rotors). Natural products (e.g. β-tocopherol and chromane derivatives) are also used as ligands in the synthesis of new complexes that may serve as metathesis catalysts. The other area of studies are electrochemical reactions (e.g. the electrochemical glycosylation of cholesterol and other sterols). Contact: prof. dr hab. Analytical problems of determining some trace metals and compounds relevant to clinical analysis as well as biological and environmental samples The research carried out aims to find new selective analytical procedures for isolating, concentrating and determining biologically active compounds in environmental samples and pharmaceutical preparations. The research is focused on the study of psychotropic, hipolipemic, anti-fungal drugs, α-blockers and hydrogen pump inhibitors. To isolate the studied compounds extraction (LLE, SPE, CPE) and chromatographic (HPLC, TLC) techniques are used. The methods for marking selected pharmaceutical products using their physical, chemical and analytical properties are based on instrumental techniques, such as molecular spectroscopy and voltamperommetry. The scope of work also includes the assessment of drug durability in simulated environmental conditions and the identification of photodecomposition products by chemometric and chromatographic methods (HPLC, HPLC-MS, and GC-MS). Also, the research whose purpose is to determine trace amounts of substances polluting the environment is conducted. The studies concern such substances as natural waters, sewage, street and road dust. Mainly heavy metal content is determined, with a special focus on the platinum group. The studies are carried out with the use of flow injection analysis technique and various detection techniques, including spectrophotometry, chemiluminescence, electroluminescence and atomic absorption spectroscopy. Valorization and protection of unique ecosystems in the north-eastern Poland Regulation of metabolism in cells and living organisms at physiological, biophysical and biochemical level For more than 30 years the Institute of Biology has been doing a detailed survey of the unique natural heritage values and resources of the north-eastern Poland. Interesting and scientifically important findings have been obtained as a result of research into the genetic structure of plant and animal relic or endangered species, and in the survey of biogeochemical processes shaping the ecosystems of rivers and lakes. The obtained results are fundamental for the balanced management of natural resources and for taking the protection and recultivation measures. The Institute of Biology conducts research whose aim is to determine the mechanisms of adaptation and protection of photosynthetic apparatus as well as the reactions preventing the stress effects in plants and animals. The role of biological membranes in bioenergetic processes, transport of iones, oxydative stress and apoptosis is analysed, and the mechanism affecting the cells in antioxidants of plant origin, regulation of cell metabolism by plant and animal hormones and other modulators of enzyme activity are studied. An important research issue is tracing the evolution of ecophysiological processes, in particular those related to the energy management in small animals experiencing different physiological states The research leads to the attempts at using various metabolism regulators to fight pathogenes, and aim at providing an insight into the processes which allow living forms to adapt to living in different environmental conditions. FACULTY OF PHYSICS young | dynamic | with perspectives 16 Scientific research Gravitational waves, relativistic celestial mechanics and active galactic nuclei The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics conducts research related to the astronomy of gravitational waves. The studies involve searching for these waves in the data being collected by the currently operating large-scale detectors: Virgo, LIGO and GEO600. Relativistic celestial mechanics analyses the motion and gravitational radiation of neutron stars or black holes systems, which interact gravitationally according to Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Astrophysics of galaxies with active nuclei encompasses theoretical modelling of electromagnetic spectrum of galactic nuclei and estimating masses of giant black holes in the centres of galaxies. The Department also deals with the didactics of astronomy, using the well-equipped Astronomical Observatory, the only facility of its kind in this part of Poland. Contact: dr hab. Jaranowski, A. Królak, Analysis of Gravitational-Wave Data, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 2009. Properties of electrons in condensed matter Electrons have charge, spin and momentum. Distributions of these quantities in crystals, amorphous bodies and fluids are examined, also with the use of large scale facilities such as synchrotrons and accelerators. The Department of Solid State Physics uses the X-ray radiation, synchrotron radiation and neutron diffraction methods to measure the distribution of charge and spin density, whereas the Compton spectrometry provides information on the electron momentum density distribution. The Mössbauer spectrometer is used to analyse the interactions between electrons and atomic nucleus. In the Bialystok laboratory a monochromatic polarized gamma radiation is applied from the only source of this type in the world. The Department cooperates with local companies implementing advanced technologies. Contact: dr hab. Krzysztof Szymański, prof. UwB, [email protected] Publications: K. Szymański, D. Satuła, L. Magnetic nanostructures The Department of Physics of Magnetic Materials examines the properties of magnetic nanostructures. Nanostructures are created by special methods, such as molecular-beam epitaxy, in the form of ultra-thin single and multiple layers where particular ferromagnetic nanometer-thick layers are separated from each other by films of non-ferromagnetic material. The magnetic properties of this type of systems may be additionally modified by introducing, for instance, structured substrates, such as about 100-nm thick planar gold “islands” on the layer of molybdenum, or by treating a sample locally with an ion beam of adequate energy and dose. The magnetic properties are analysed by the use of such techniques as: mili- and micro- magneto-optical magnetometry, STM/ AMF/MFM scanning microscopy and femtosecond magneto-optics. The research is conducted in broad cooperation in Poland (Polish National Scientific Network ARTMAG) and abroad. In the years 2004-2009 prof. dr hab. Andrzej Maziewski coordinated the implementation of the European project NANOMAG-LAB, financed within the Sixth Framework Programme and the bilateral PolishGerman project. Currently, the SPINLAB and FANTOMAS projects are being implemented. Contact: prof. dr hab. Andrzej Maziewski, [email protected] Publications: A. Stupakiewicz, A. Maziewski, K. Matlak, N. Spiridis, M. FACULT Y OF LAW young | dynamic | with perspectives 32 Scientific research European Union financial law Tax and self-government fees reform The object of study are normative regulations with respect to the common currency and uniform financial market as well as the EU income, expenses and budget, including the regulations and directives on budget, taxes, banking and financial institutions which determine the directions in the harmonisation of the EU law in member states. The research into the European Union regulations also concerns their application (reception, implementation and interpretation) in the system of Polish law. The aim of the research is to identify the problems connected with making and applying legal regulations concerning the taxes and fees which are income of self-government units. In this context the acts of making and applying law are analysed, and the mechanism of administering self-government taxes by state tax authorities is also evaluated. The consequence of identifying the problems will be offering proposals for systematic and individual change. Contact: prof. dr hab. Cezary Kosikowski, [email protected] Publications: C. Public finance reform in Poland and Central and Eastern European countries The aim of the research is to identify the areas in the public finance system, which require changes on account of the improper functioning of specific institutions, and then to suggest potentially optimal solutions. The public finance reform is determined by the accession of some countries to the EU, steady enlargement of the eurozone and changes in the structures of societies due to their ageing, which has a considerable impact on the level of public finance. The works carried out are related to the state and self-government level finance in Poland and other Central and East European countries. The research also includes the budget discipline with respect to limiting the budget deficit and public debt as well as implementing the task budget. On the self-government level the studies refer to, inter alia, the issues of financial decentralization of self-government units. Contact: prof. dr hab. The University of Białystok was the first Polish higher education institution to start a faculty abroad and educate students in Polish. The initiative was launched in order to improve higher education attainment levels among the Polish minority in Lithuania, which were two times lower than the national average. According to the official statistics, the Polish community of 235,000 people living now in Lithuania is the largest national minority in the country (6.7 percent of the population). Currently there are more than 100 schools in Lithuania with Polish as the language of instruction, where over fourteen thousand pupils study. 75 percent of the school leavers continue their education in universities or colleges. There are 450 students at the Faculty of Economics and Informatics in Vilnius. In July 2010 the first forty graduates were awarded Bachelor’s degrees of the University of Białystok. The Faculty consists of two departments: the Department of Informatics headed by dr hab. Tadeusz Łozowski, prof. UwB, and the Department of Economics chaired by prof. dr hab. Czesław Noniewicz. There are nine research workers employed at the Faculty, including three senior academics. The Faculty used to be a co-publisher of Rocznik Stowarzyszenia Naukowców Polaków Litwy (The Annual of the Association of Polish Scientists in Lithuania). In 2010 the CED had a collection of 3,000 EU-related items. bg.uwb.edu.pl 41 Cultural and promotional activity Library for the disabled The promotional activity of the Library is aimed at integrating the local scientific and library environment as well as promoting the Library as a cultural institution. Jerzy Giedroyc University Library in Białystok is a friendly place to disabled visitors. It has special facilities which help the disabled users to benefit from the Library and their own resources. Two small audio-frequency induction loops help the hard-of-hearing persons to use the lending library and reading room, and the portable loop for the areas of up to 150 m2 and FM systems may be used when needed. The specialist equipment can also be found in the special collections reading room and the multimedia hall. Readers may also use the audio reader, which makes it possible to hear a text and record it on a CD disc, or the computer with touchscreen devices, which allow the blind and the visually impaired visitors to browse through files with computer graphics. Special software enables users to convert (adjust or change) the library resources into special versions for the disabled. The people who are familiar with the Braille alphabet may use the electronic typing machine, printer and two electronic audio book players. In the reading room with free access to the Library collections there is a stationary magnifier, the so-called reading converter – magnifying text 30 times on the monitor screen. Readers may also use the electronic magnifying glass. In the library hall exhibitions are arranged, prepared by the employees of the Reference Department. In 2006 a cycle of meetings called the Podlasie Librarians Forum was initiated. The meetings are an open discussion forum and a platform for the exchange of views by the employees of Białystok libraries. Since 2008 also monthly meetings are organised within the framework of the project entitled Podlasie in Scientific Research. This is an initiative which serves the popularization of scientific research results among the local community. An Hour with the French Fable project is implemented in cooperation with the students of French Philology, UwB. These are regular meetings for primary school children, which popularize French literature and art. The calendar of events organised by the Library also includes national scientific conferences. The first conference was held in 2007. It concerned the issues of organisational culture in the library. The next one, organised in 2009, was devoted to selected aspects of internal marketing in the library activities. Since the Library was moved to a new building, it has been a venue for meetings with renowned personalities from the world of politics and science. The Library has been visited by the ambassadors of Latvia and Israel, or by solicitors form the USA and Swiss embassies. It hosted prof. Władysław Bartoszewski and Ryszard Kaczorowski – the last President of the Republic of Poland in Exile. In 2006 a press conference of prime minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz was held. The Library hosts annual celebrations of the Library Week. Scientific, theatrical and musical events held are open in character and enjoy great popularity Access to the Library building and the door width are adjusted to the needs of wheelchair users and voice-operated elevators help blind and partially sighted visitors to leave at the right floor. The reading rooms are equipped with adequate tables. On each floor there are also special toilet facilities. On 10 September, 2010 the University Library was proud to host a special gala of the competition The Disabled-Friendly Place, in which the UwB Library was awarded a distinction. UNIvERSiT y of BIAlYSTOK young | dynamic | with perspectives 42 Projects for the region SCIENCE FOR SOCIETY The University is involved in a lot of projects whose aim is to support the regional development. This is mainly achieved by means of expert studies with practical guidelines and demands for action to improve the situation in the examined areas. The University research workers get engaged in the works for public benefit organisations, hold offices in government and self-government institutions, raise EU-funding for the projects intended to spur the development of the north-eastern Poland. The activity within the framework of consortiums and research networks has practical applications. Its effect are reports, ex-ante and expost assessments, evaluations, strategies and programme documentation. The University cooperates with entrepreneurs, does research in support of the country’s economy, organises student internships with companies, invites practitioners to deliver lectures at the University and organises thematic conferences. New trends, new methods In response to social demand, the University launches new fields of study, for instance the International Economic Relations at the Faculty of Economics and Management which, according to the report prepared in 2011 by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, was listed among the eleven most popular, the so called unique fields of study in Poland. The Faculty of Physics, jointly with the Białystok Oncology Centre, introduced a specialisation called Medical Physics. Currently, it trains medical staff to handle medical equipment. Within the framework of the project The twenty-first century teacher, the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology conducts training courses for students of pedagogy aimed to prepare them to work as teachers in new technological conditions. The didactic work is mainly done by distance learning. The Eastern Centre of Technology Transfer, founded at the University of Bialystok, along with the Marshal’s Office of the Podlaskie Voivodeship, is implementing the project Podlasie Innovation Strategy – building the implementation system (2009-2011). The created strategy involves the updating, monitoring, benchmarking, regional foresight, development of innovation cooperation network as well as the promotion of technology and innovation transfer. Within the framework of the research project entitled Entrepreneurship in Podlasie, the employees of the Law Faculty analysed legal, economic and social conditions of economic activity in Podlasie, in view of the fact that the region is in many respects incomparable to other areas of Poland. The grounds for the research may be the de lege ferenda proposals for regulations by law and office management. The Faculty also conducts several criminological research projects. These are the Monitoring, identifying and counteracting threats to citizen safety and security (project commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education), Legal and criminological aspects of implementing and applying modern technologies for the protection of internal security and safety as well as the Forfeiture of property and economic gains derived from criminal activity. The Faculty associations organise numerous open training sessions, including those on tax law or inter-sector partnership. 47 RESEARCH FACILITIES The University of Bialystok meets the standards set for science in the twenty-first century. It has well-organised information infrastructure (wireless internet, University’s own servers and easily accessible LAN sockets). Thanks to that, it is possible to have classes and consultation by distance learning. The UwB makes necessary investments in laboratories and research studios. Thanks to a European Union project (2009-2012), exceptionally costly and technologically advanced equipment has been purchased for the Centre of Synthesis and Analysis BioNanoTechno, which was created at the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry. The laboratory infrastructure consists of three studios: Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Nanotechnology and Material Chemistry as well as Modern Technologies of Polymer Synthesis and Analysis. Having highly professional staff working with the state-of-the-art equipment allows for comprehensive research on the materials at the macro-, micro- and nanoscale. Experimental units of the Faculty of Physics have over a dozen measurement sites to examine crystal structures as well as magnetic and electronic properties of condensed matter. Thanks to the funds from the implemented European Union projects, modern equipment has been collected for research on the magnetic nanomaterials in the following laboratories: STM/AFM/MFM Scanning Microscopy, Femtosecond Laser Techniques, Magneto-optic Magnetometry and Brillouin Scattering. In turn, the Mössbauer Spectrometry Laboratory uses the unique source of circularly polarized radiation. Modern instruments and unique measurement techniques make the Białystok research centre an attractive partner for international cooperation. Several research projects are implemented in foreign laboratories during measurement sessions using large-scale apparatuses, such as synchrotrons or neutron sources. A part of the Faculty of Physics is the Astronomical Observatory, a very well-equipped didactic and research centre for the observation of astronomical objects, the only facility of its kind in this part of Poland, applying unique solutions on the na- tional level. For visual observation and photographic registration two 100/1000 binoculars and a 150/2250 telescope are used as well as Made LX200/12 telescope with the CCD and TV cameras. The University location amidst three national parks puts special demands on scholars. Hence, in the year 2008 a modern field station in Gugny was established, with splendid laboratory facilities. Thanks to the station, it is possible to examine the unique fauna and flora of the Biebrza River valley and prepare scientific methods of protecting its precious natural values. The Humanities employees have smaller requirements concerning modern equipment and technologies. However, they also use unique instruments and software. The Criminology Laboratory at the Faculty of Law is equipped with the apparatus for examining the authenticity of documents, mainly money. Specialist software installed on the server of the Institute of Sociology enables construction and implementation of an online research questionnaire. The Faculty of Philology has two language laboratories. Under the project Teacher of the twenty-first century, implemented by the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology, new educational tools are used, including the skype, graphoscopes, multimedia projectors, DVD and VHS players, screens, laptop computers and interactive boards configured with the laptops. The UwB takes care of the scientific development of the disabled students and academic teachers. The University Library is one of the three best-equipped university libraries in Poland as regards the specialist equipment for the disabled users. UNIvERSiT y of BIAlYSTOK young | dynamic | with perspectives THE UNIVERSITY OF BIALYSTOK CAMPUS The construction of university campus, which has a chance to become the most recognizable structure in the region, started in February 2011. It will also be one of the most modern academic centres in Poland in terms of its scientific and didactic facilities. This is the biggest investment in the history of the UwB. The academic town will be created in Ciołkowskiego Street. It will cover the area of about 30 hectares, half of which will be a green park where students and scholars will find inspiration and rest. According to the plan, the first structures will be handed over at the end of 2013. Investment costs The planned investment costs are about 200 million PLN. The funds come from the European Union grants and state budget. Within the framework of the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment, the construction of the Faculty of Physics, the Institute of Chemistry and the University Cultural Centre will be implemented. The amount of money for the purchase of specialist equipment in the classrooms and laboratories is over 15 million PLN. Thanks to the funds from the Operational Programme Development of Eastern Poland, the Institute of Biology and the Institute of 48 Mathematics and Informatics with the University Computation Centre will be built. The amount of money planned to be spent on specialist equipment is nearly 13 million PLN. All the classrooms and laboratories in the campus will be equipped with the highest quality computer and laboratory equipment, essential for teaching purposes. About the project The campus designer is prof. Marek Budzyński, one of the most renowned Polish architects, the creator of the University Library in Warsaw. The architectural design is based on the philosophical concept which assumes the synthesis of sciences in pursuit of the truth. The names of campus alleys allude to this idea. Around the crossing streets of Oneness, converging at the Square of Sciences Synthesis, the buildings of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Faculty of Physics, Institute of Biology and Chemistry will be constructed. The Square will be surrounded by entrance portals to particular institutes and faculties, with engraved mottoes related to a given field. In the middle of the Square there will be a sphere-shaped fountain. The campus will also house the University Computational Centre, the Prof. Andrzej Myrcha University Museum of Nature, a greenhouse, an animal house and laboratories. In many lecture rooms the Sun Square will be seen through glass windows. The Faculty of Physics will be adjacent to the University Cultural Centre, where student organisations and parliament as well as a cafe and concert hall will be located. University of Bialystok University of Bialystok was created in 1997 by transforming the former 29-year-old Branch of Warsaw University.
