Polio Eradication
General Secretary and CEO of
Rotary International John Hewko
met with Bill Gates, co-chair of
the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, 7 September in Seattle,
Washington, USA, to discuss
moving forward together to eradicate polio and continuing to energize Rotarians to see the eradication effort through to the finish.
Polio cases worldwide decreased
almost 50 percent during the first
six months of 2011, compared
with the same period in 2010.
Rotarians are raising funds for
polio eradication as part of Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge
to match $355 million in grants
from the Gates Foundation. The
resulting $555 million will support immunization campaigns in
developing countries where polio
continues to infect and paralyze
children, robbing them of their
futures and compounding the
hardships faced by their families.
An Inspector Calls
Once again Roe has booked the
Hawkswell Theatre for our annual fund raiser.
On this occasion J.B.Priestley’s
three- act drama will be performed and. It is considered one
of the classics of the last century
And is guaranteed to provide a
most enjoyable occasion.
The play was first performed in
1945 in the Soviet Union and in
the U.K in 1946.
The action takes place on a single
night in 1912. A prosperous middle class family who live in a
comfortable home in an Industrial
city in the north midlands are the
principal characters. A dinner
party at their home is interrupted
when Police Inspector Poole
calls. He is investigating the sui-
cide of a young girl.
Come to the Hawkswell on20th
March to find out what follows!!!
Tickets will cost €15 or €16 and
will be distributed to members in
good time. As usual these tickets
will NOT reserve seats; patrons
will need to book their seats at
the Hawkswell booking office
Benefits of belonging to RIBI
Among the many benefits belonging to RIBI is a reduction
in subscription costs.
-----------------Cost to individual Rotarian without RIBI
Current RIBI subscription
(including RI dues for RIBI
members, magazine (Rotary Today) and insurance) £46.00
Promotional campaign £2.75
Total for 2011/12 £48.75
Page 2
Current RI subscription for
2011/12 $53.00
Magazine (mandatory if no local
one) $24.00
Total for 2011/12 $77.00
(At rate of $1.60:£1, £48.13)
It is clear that, in almost the entire
world, the amount paid by clubs
and districts are significantly
higher than in RIBI. It is also true
that many parts of the world are
moving to the use of multidistrict training sessions, PETS
and conferences as well as multidistrict meetings, which in some
ways reflect what RIBI has been
doing for nearly one hundred
years.
(*RI survey in 2006)
To the club Rotarian there would
be an inevitable rise in subscriptions as mentioned above. The
amount of any increase would
depend on how much of what is
currently paid by RIBI is continued by the district

Do you understand what a Billion is
A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
One is never too old to learn something stupid!!!
As we seniors know, sometimes we have trouble with our computers. I had a problem recently; so I called Eric,
the 11-year-old next door, whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked him to come over. Eric clicked
a couple of buttons and solved the problem..
As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong?
He replied, 'It was an ID TEN T’ error.
I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired,'An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix
it again.'
Eric grinned .... 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?
'No,' I replied..
'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.'
So I wrote down:

Seven Habits of highly effective Rotarians
Compiled by: Dr. Jagdish V. Bhatt
Congratulations
Rotary Club of Bombay Airport
1.Attendance
4. DISCIPLINE
Effective Rotarians always try to
attend their club meetings or
make up at other clubs as much
as possible. They are aware
that regular attendance is an important part of their
membership commitment and do
not miss a chance to attend.
2. FELLOWSHIP
Effective Rotarians understand the
value of self-discipline and
know that productive accomplishments are hard to achieve
without it.
5. TIME, MONEY & ENERGY
Effective Rotarians know they have a
purpose in Rotary and
fully realize they must earmark a certain amount of time,
money and energy to maintain this
commitment.
Effective Rotarians enjoy meeting other
members and often
feel this fellowship is as important to
Rotary as the actual
business part of a meeting
3. VOCATION
Effective Rotarians respect every vocation and understand
how the classification system is the basis
of Rotary.
6. EMPATHY
Effective Rotarians put themselves in
the position of the other
person, especially if that person is in
difficulty.
7. IMAGE OF ROTARY
Effective Rotarians may sometimes
feel that all is not right with Rotary.
But they still maintain a positive attitude and portray a good image of
Rotary both inside and outside the
organisation.
All of our members join in extending sincere congratulations to
our member Breda Roche on her
recent wedding to Rod McGahon.
We wish them many happy years
of wedded bliss.
Breda is the first of our members
to be wed while a member.
Another FIRST for Sligo
Lunchtime speaker
24th October 2011.
Brian spoke of his experiences of Polio and post
polio syndrome which he contracted at a young
age. He has however to a great degree overcome
his disability and enjoys a good quality of life.
He said Sligo Rotary had been a great support to
him. They had presented him with a specially
adapted car which made a huge difference to him.
He still drives a car and has facilities for storage
of his wheelchair in a roof-top box. Brians’s
address was greeted with aclamation
Sean who was instrumental in assisting Brian at
the outset thanked him and described how our
club had acquired Brian’s first car.

From the editor’s lap-top
President Hugh and Anne, Michael Horan and Mary, Ray

RIBI who also spoke on particular Rotary themes.
Dublin made presentations celebrating their century of service.
The Sligo contingent were
joined by Trevor and Helen
Rankin of Newtownabbey club

meals together.
There were many highlights,
and excellent presentations. It is
difficult to single out any one ,
they were all interesting, inspiring and very topical.
Other speakers were Fergus
Finlay, Jan O’Sullivan TD,
Rushton Hurley CEO Next
Vista for Learning. Dr. Vincent
Cunnane CEO Shannon Development, Lord Boateng a barrister spoke at length on Africa.
Perhaps the most interesting was
Gavin Bate, a professional
mountaineer who has climbed to
the summit of Everest six times.
The R.I.President’s representative Ron Beaubien spoke on ethics in business and the relevance
of Rotary’s 4 way test.
He described in graphic terms
the difficulties encountered and
illustrated his talk with some
very fine and graphic slides.
