Bringing life-saving vehicle technology to market Road safety has gradually increased as safety systems such as airbags, seatbelts and ABS brakes have become more and more advanced and effective, greatly improving car occupants’ chances of survival in the event of a crash. However, despite important improvements, each year more than 1.2 million people die and up to 50 million are injured on the roads. More has to be done to prevent the accident from occurring in the first place. This is where intelligent vehicle safety systems, so called eSafety systems, can make a huge contribution. eSafetyAware! seeks to accelerate the market introduction of such life-saving technologies by organising information campaigns and dedicated events aimed at creating awareness of eSafety benefits among policy-makers and end-users. eSafetyAware! is a non-profit association, which promotes public awareness of eSafety systems and their benefits. It is open to all with an interest in eSafety, and includes members from industry, public authorities, motoring clubs and other organisations. The campaign is focused on Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The technology, also known by a series of other names such as Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), etc, has proved highly effective in preventing skidding, and has been hailed the greatest road safety innovation since the seatbelt. ESC - 3 letters to save your life ESC actively supports the driver in critical situations: a child suddenly runs into the road, the door of a parked car suddenly opens, or a car suddenly changes lanes. ESC prevents the vehicle from skidding when rapid avoiding action is taken. 25 times per second ESC checks the driver’s steering intention against the actual vehicle direction. When these are not in sync, and the car is starting to slide out of control, ESC intervenes by braking the relevant wheel. ESC works together with computerised anti-lock braking systems to correct oversteer (when the back of the car slides out) or understeer (when car loses grip from the front). In this way ESC helps bring the car back under control, heading the direction the driver intended. Imagine if all cars had ESC… At least 40% of fatal road accidents are the result of skidding.Studies show that ESC could reduce skidding accidents by up to 80% and by this save thousands of lives and avoid millions of injuries each year.
