Constructive and Destructive forces lab
LT 6d. I can explain the relationship between erosion and deposition.
Habit – I can follow directions and treat lab supplies responsibly
Instructions
1. Assign the following group roles:
• Set up ____________________________– Reads directions, makes sure each
scenario is set up correctly. (Hands will get dirty)
• Water person - __________________________ applies water correctly to each
scenario
• Runner/recorder ___________________________– Gathers supplies/answers
questions
2. Choose which scenario you will start with.
A. Wave motion
A. Wave Motion
Supplies –
1 Tub
B. Mountain weathering
1 white tray
C. River Erosion
4 cups full of sand
2 cups full of water
1. Place all four cups of sand on one side of the tub so that the sand reaches all the
way to the top of the tub.
2. Pour two cups of water in the tub beside the sand (but not directly on the sand.)
3. Sketch a side view of the tub below:
4. Simulate wave motion by using the tray to gently push waves towards the sand.
5. Answer the questions below
• What geological feature starts to form when waves begin?
•
What happens to the sand cliffs as the waves continue over time?
•
Where does deposition occur in this environment?
•
Why does deposition occur here?
•
After the cliff is eroded what geological feature is left behind?
•
Sketch the final result below.

B. Mountain Building and weathering.
Supplies – 1 paint tray
3 cups of sand
1 spray bottle full of water
1 ruler
Instructions – Read all instructions and questions before beginning.
1. Pour all three cups of sand near the back of the tray.
2. Simulate a convergent boundary by pushing opposite
edges of the sand together until the sand forms a
mountain-like shape.
Initial sketch of mountain
3. Measure the height of your mountain. ________ cm
4. Sketch your mountain below
5. Simulate weathering by rain by repeatedly spraying the
top and sides of the mountain.
6. After 1 minute sketch your mountain again.

minute of spraying
* How many instances of Mass Wasting occurred while you
were spraying?
7. Continue spraying for 3-4
minutes.
8. Measure the final
height_________ cm

9. Sketch the final result hereà
10. Answer the questions.
• Describe the destructive forces in this model and how
they affected your mountain.

C. River erosion.
Supplies- 1 paint tray
4 cups full of sand
3 cups of water in a tub
1 measuring cup
1. Fill a tub half way with water.
2. Place all four cups of sand on the raised portion of the paint tray
3. Spread the sand out evenly over the raised portion.
4. Pour one cup full of water into the lower portion. This will represent the sea where the
river empties.
5. Trace an “S” shaped river bed about 1 cm deep from the highest point to the sea.
6. Gently pour a small stream of water at the top of the river bed for two seconds.
7. Sketch the path of the river here.
8. After you have poured all the water through the river bed make a new sketch. Label any
areas where deposition has occurred.
9. Answer the questions.
• What happened to the riverbed as the river passed through it?
•
Where did deposition occur in this model? Why did it occur here?

Final writing – In each situation erosion and deposition occurred in different places. Describe the
effects of erosion in each model and describe where deposition occurred in each model. Finally
explain why deposition occurred in these places and how this relates to the real world. – Due
Monday.
