Greenwood Players — Education Programme
THE LIFE OF GALILEO — by Bertolt Brecht, in a new version by David Hare
The Greenwood Players is a new and exciting semi-professional theatre company
specialising in site-inspired theatre. Our first project “Under the Greenwood Tree” took
Shakespeare’s scenes under the ancient oaks of Belvoir Forest — which were saplings
at the time of Shakespeare — a living and thematic link. Our new production, “The Life
of Galileo”, will take place in Armagh Observatory, the oldest scientific institution in
Northern Ireland and the longest continuously functioning astronomical observatory in
the UK and Ireland.
The Irish premiere of “The Life of Galileo” by Bertolt Brecht, in a new production by
David Hare, will be performed in various locations in the Observatory.
Founded in 1789 by Archbishop Richard Robinson, the Observatory is a modern
research institute with a rich heritage that continues and builds on the astronomical work
of early scientists such as Galileo Galilei. The complex resonances surrounding
Brecht’s play will be amplified by its performance in such an historic institution, which
provides an important backdrop for the audience whilst illuminating the complexity of
Galileo’s own encounter with Church and State.
We want to bring this play to your classroom!
WHO: Our Education Programme is led by Patrick Sanders, who has worked with a
number of Northern Ireland’s leading theatre companies in education and outreach.
We will be offering schools workshops targeting Key Stage 4 which will include the
following:
-‐
-‐
-‐
-‐
scene performed by two cast members
study of Brechtian/non-naturalistic theatre
theatre in unusual venues
participatory exercises for the students exploring all of the above.
WHERE: All workshops will be in-school. We will also be having a schools matinee
performance on Friday 22nd February at 1.00 pm in the Observatory. Spaces are limited
and tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis and will be available from 14th
January.
WHEN: The available dates for the In-School Workshops are from Monday 21st January
until Friday 1st February 2013.
HOW MUCH: The workshops will be free of charge to schools. The cost of tickets for
the schools matinee on Friday 22nd February will be at the concessionary rate of £8.
Tickets will be available from 14th January. Accessing the workshops is not
dependent on attending the performances.
The play promises to be an intense, atmospheric experience. We anticipate a high level
of interest in the education programme and places are limited so book early!
