Yours, Enid M Crowe, Producer, The Greenwood Players. Greenwood Players — Education Programme THE LIFE OF GALILEO — by Bertolt Brecht, in a new version by David Hare The Greenwood Players is a new and exciting semi-professional theatre company specialising in site-inspired theatre. Our first project “Under the Greenwood Tree” took Shakespeare’s scenes under the ancient oaks of Belvoir Forest — which were saplings at the time of Shakespeare — a living and thematic link. Our new production, “The Life of Galileo”, will take place in Armagh Observatory, the oldest scientific institution in Northern Ireland and the longest continuously functioning astronomical observatory in the UK and Ireland. The Irish premiere of “The Life of Galileo” by Bertolt Brecht, in a new production by David Hare, will be performed in various locations in the Observatory. Founded in 1789 by Archbishop Richard Robinson, the Observatory is a modern research institute with a rich heritage that continues and builds on the astronomical work of early scientists such as Galileo Galilei. The complex resonances surrounding Brecht’s play will be amplified by its performance in such an historic institution, which provides an important backdrop for the audience whilst illuminating the complexity of Galileo’s own encounter with Church and State. We want to bring this play to your classroom!
