carlow golf trail

carlow golf trail
south east Ireland
introduction by
christy o’connor jnr.
Co. Carlow is a place of delightful contrasting scenery, a backdrop that adds enormously
to the enjoyment of some wonderful and challenging golf courses. The panorama of this
fertile valley, crossed by the Barrow, Slaney and Burrin rivers, can be best appreciated
from the Killeshin Hills to the west and the Blackstairs Mountains to the east. That scenic
beauty, once likened to the meadows of Languedoc by the writer Francis F. Hayden, is now
enhanced by a tapestry of golf courses spread across the county.
A day or a week golfing in Co. Carlow will challenge the ambitious and prove enjoyable and
relaxing for golfers of all standards.
Just a decade on from those first drives at Mount Wolseley Hotel Spa & Country Club, the
realisation that Carlow has a golf course matching best international standards is a source
of enormous pride for everyone, and not just for those of us who dreamed the dream
in the early 1990s. On seeing the site at Mount Wolseley I immediately jumped at the
opportunity to create what is now a true championship standard golf course, this coupled
with all the wonderful amenities available and only one hour’s drive from Ireland’s capital,
makes this a complete holiday destination.

carlow golf club
deerpark course
Carlow Golf Club is an inland links laid out in a former wild deerpark over undulating terrain
with numerous elevated tees, several excellent dog-legs and small slick putting surfaces.
Extensive, mature woods are a strong feature in a pleasant countryside setting where the
unusually sandy soil has the bonus of allowing year round play. The present course was laid out
by Cecil Barcroft in 1922, redesigned by Tom Simpson in 1937 and remains faithful to his design
with only minor alterations to this day. The course is rated amongst the top 20 Championship
Courses in Ireland.
There are many long par 4s and the 16th, a very
demanding two shotter played through a tunnel-like
valley, has been chosen by Christy O'Connor Snr. as the
foremost 16th hole in Ireland. The par 3, 17th at Carlow
has been likened to threading a needle. The par 5, 18th
offers the chance of a closing birdie and a grandstand
finish as it tumbles downhill all the way back to the
clubhouse. A good ending to a memorable round.
oakpark course
Carlow Golf Club’s 9 Hole Par 35, Oakpark Course,
designed by renowned architect Jeff Howes, is a truly
terrific layout. Situated on rolling terrain, it provides
a superb challenge to golfers of all standards. Similar
to the championship Deerpark course, the emphasis
is on accurate iron play and a delicate short game to
extricate yourself from trouble when required! Located
adjacent to the existing Deerpark course, it is one of
the finest 9 holes of golf that a player can encounter
anywhere in the country.

Several magnificent mature trees line the course providing shelter on those rainy days and also
add that extra hurdle to overcome. The course also comprises of two large lakes, the first takes
in the 3rd, 8th and 10th holes and the other lake must be crossed to reach the 14th and 15th
holes. If this is not enough to deal with, plenty of sand traps have to be negotiated, providing a
very challenging experience. A putting green situated next to the clubhouse consists of 9 holes
where players can practice their putting skills before making their mark on the course. Dry
underfoot all year round.
This family run course is open 7 days per week and welcomes all players from the very young
to the more experienced.
bagenalstown pitch & putt
Bagenalstown Pitch and Putt Club is considered to be one of the best in the country in terms
of design and level of maintenance. It is an undulating course with a great variety of holes from
long to short, which will test the skills of even the best players. Holes 4 and 8 are particularly
attractive with their elevated tee boxes.
Holes 11 and 15 will bring the best out of the long hitters. The greens are generous and in top
condition due to the dedicated work of the members, so birdies can be in good supply.
The club is situated in a unique and pleasant setting with views of Mount Leinster and Leighlin
Hills. The club was formed in 1963, at a time when the sport was very popular and played
exclusively in Ireland. It can be likened to a short game of golf, with holes varying in length
from 25 metres to a maximum of 70. Enjoyed by all ages, pitch and putt is a source of both
recreation and healthy exercise.
