The history in baseball at Greenville College has been filled with success on the field as well as off the field. Many lessons have been learned through baseball that have impacted students’ lives for eternity. For that reason alone we are thankful for Dr. Doug Faulkner the significant role our baseball program has played in students’ lives. As we remember the history, we also look forward to the future and great things ahead for the tool of baseball to be used in the development of young men. Our head coach, Lynn Carlson, gives us many reasons to be optimistic about the 65th season of Panther Baseball and beyond. We hope you will enjoy watching and supporting Panther Baseball as it strives to fulfill the Mission of Greenville College on and off the field. After losing 7 players to graduation including 5 starters, the Panthers have no choice but to turn the page. Fortunately, the recruiting class for the fall of 2009 mixed with the development of some younger players should combine with the returning core to produce a capable team for 2010. The biggest losses for the Panthers will be starters Mike Scott, Zach Miller, Brian Stoff offensively as well as Andy Rincker on the mound. Along 4 2010 GREENVILLE COLLEGE BASEBALL | www.gcpanthers.com with that could be the loss of Bryan Hobbie, who was a 2nd team all-conference outfielder last season. There is an outside chance, because of remaining eligibility, he may return to the Panthers for one more season. Other graduated seniors who were big contributors were Heath Erwin on the mound and Carter Burford behind the plate. All of them leave big shoes to fill. In addition to the senior departures, the Panthers also lose starting shortstop, Ross Cook, and third baseman, Mike O’Hara who are both concentrating on their academics. That leaves no less than 5 positions on the field that will be assumed by new starters this spring. The Panthers return a core of good players that should help solidify the team on both offense and defense. Returning at 2nd base will be Honorable Mention All-Conference player, junior Kyle Hobar (.320 avg, 9 sb). Also returning will be senior backstop Brian Deadmond, (.328 avg.), who led the conference in throwing out base-stealers last spring. The biggest boost for the Panthers this spring on offense will come from 5th year senior, Stefan Neece, who is coming off Tommy John Surgery and a medical redshirt season. Stefan is a 3-time All-Conference player for the Panthers and an experienced 1st baseman. He currently ranks in the top 10 career statistics in Home Runs, Doubles, Hits, RBI’s, Total Bases, Batting Average, and Walks for the Panthers. Joining the trio of returning starters will be several Panthers who made significant contributions last season in more limited roles. Returning junior Justin Hubbard hit .345 in 20 starts at 3rd base and designated hitter. Also a junior, Daniel Covert hit .306 while playing the outfield and designated hitter. Other returning hitters who will be counted on for offense this spring will be junior Wes Letizia, and sophomore Ryan Siddle. The returning pitchers for the Panthers include several starters and others who will contribute out of the bullpen. Matt Leefers is a 4-year starter for the Panthers and has dominated opponents at times. We look for more consistency from Matt this season. Eric Heiden played a big role on the staff last spring with several quality spotstarts against some of the best opponents on the schedule. Daniel Covert showed some continued growth during his sophomore campaign finishing 2nd in the team in wins and 3rd in strikeouts. Both Eric and Daniel will have a chance to start some games this spring. Out of the bullpen, two returners will help to keep the Panthers in games and nail down victories. Justin Hubbard and Wes Letizia continue their development and both have the pitches to dominate in relief. The class of new players for the Panthers should have several legitimate contributors in the group. Beginning on the mound, the Panthers have a group of 7 new pitchers that should be able to replace the pitchers that graduated last spring and add quality arms to our pitching staff. Junior David Massengill is a transfer student from Lakeland College. He is from Neoga, Illinois and should contribute both in the outfield and on the mound as well. Also joining the team this spring is sophomore Derrick Hudnut, who spent last spring getting himself eligible for this year after transferring in from Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville. Several freshman will compete for Scott Voyles, and Kye Winter will all likely see some innings in the spring. At third base, Kenny Trager will compete with returners Justin Hubbard and Ryan Siddle for playing time. innings on the mound as well. Kye Winter has the potential to start ballgames as well as Derek Reckmann. Also competing for innings will be Cole Lawson, Kyle Boldt, and Scott Voyles. Each of them has the potential to be valuable members of the pitching staff. With 5 position players graduating, many of the new players will vie for starting and contributing roles this spring. On the infield, 5 new middle infielders bring depth, versatility, and athleticism to the team. Ben Brown, Travis Hawkins will push returning 2nd baseman Kyle Hobar. At shortstop where a position is available, Juan Mondragon, in the outfield by some new faces. New players competing for positions will include junior transfer David Massengill, sophomore transfer Andrew Pihl, and freshmen Cole Lawson, Scott Voyles, and Juan Mondragon. The Panthers have high hopes for the Spring of 2010. The team will strive to live out the Panther Baseball Covenants on and off the field and trust the Lord for the rest. We hope you will join the Panthers in their quest to compete with character. We appreciate your support. Go Panthers!!!! Behind the plate Adam Wallace will work under senior Brian Deadmond to improve and develop into the quality college catcher he is capable of becoming. Returning to the outfield will be junior Daniel Covert, who played some right field last season. He will be joined www.gcpanthers.com www.gcpanthers.com | 2010 2010 GREENVILLE GREENVILLE COLLEGE COLLEGE BASEBALL BASEBALL 5 panther baseball HEAD COACH Lynn COACHING STAFF Carlson (618) 664-6623 [email protected] Coach Carlson is a 1993 graduate of Greenville College.
