November 5, 2007 The “Bear” Essentials February 8, 2016 Dear Parents, as you can imagine there are many important elements to becoming a Good Reader. One of those is Fluency. A fluent reader: Pays close attention to accuracy Reads with appropriate expression Reads smoothly, watching out for punctuation Reads at a natural pace Makes sure they comprehend This week as your child reads to you please listen for fluency and guide them through repeated readings in order to strengthen this important building block. Sound/spellings for this week: We will review the long and short vowel spellings of a, i, and o with many words and activities The sound of /v/ spelled with a v as in vet, Vic, velvet, vest, vent, vine, valentine, vase, vote, visit, shave, save, stove, drove, live, alive, river, never, clever, Long u (not introduced until Thursday, 2/11) spelled with a u and a u_e as in unit, fuse, use, amuse, amusement, muse, mute, cube, cute, music, bugle, mule, unite, cucumber, universe,.. Spelling: No spelling test this week. We will focus on reading with fluency in our homework with sight word sentences on Monday and Tuesday and our stories that are coming home. Math: In math this week we will be learning more about doubles + 1. We will talk about how double facts can help us solve double plus one facts. (If you know 6+6=12 then 6+7=13 because it is one more.) Please help your child to make this connection! Social Studies: As presidents day approaches, we will be learning about some of our nation’s past presidents. Valentine cards: Please have your child just sign their cards and NOT put any names on the front of the envelopes. It is much easier for the children to deliver the cards to their friends without names. Monday Guest Author: Michelle Nelson Schmidt 1.
