Today I Am 2008 ANNUA L REPORT ATL ANTA RONALD M c DONALD HOUSE CHARITIES I was opened in 1979. If our walls could talk, they’d tell of the more than 35,000 families who’ve stayed at the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses. For 30 years, our facilities have offered more than just shelter to those with sick and injured children. They’ve provided a structure – an opportunity – for normalcy when everything else was chaos. Our walls became their refuge; our House became their home. We began with one House and eight bedrooms and today offer two Houses with 61 bedrooms, including ten transplant suites. Today the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses are an integral part of the world-renowned pediatric care available in our city. People come from all over the state and region to access this expert care, and when they do, we can offer them a place to call home. We welcome you to our home and invite you to learn more about our mission through the eyes of those who’ve benefited the most. Spanning our 30 years here in Atlanta, these stories are our inspiration and the reason we will work to provide another 30 years of comfort and hope for even more families. pg. I was 12 and terminally ill. I was 12 when I had to sidetrack my strategy for fitting in at school and replace it with my strategy for staying alive. Acute lymphocytic leukemia is what doctors called it; others just labeled it “childhood leukemia.” Whatever you call it, it had attacked my body and left me weak and in need of a bone marrow transplant. I was scared. My family was scared. Everything happened quickly, though I don’t remember much of it. pg. 2 What I do remember is the warmth that I felt at the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House. It was such a kind place. And cheerful! You might not think of a place like that as being happy, but it is. I also remember being so grateful that we could stay somewhere together and not have to drive into the city for all my treatments. It took a lot of stress off all of us. We could rest. We could try to be normal. We could talk to other families who were going through the same thing. pg. Today I am a survivor. Today I am 25 and a student in fashion design. I’m looking at the future and thinking about my internship, graduation, maybe a business degree. I’m wondering if a move to New York is in order. I am more independent today, more successful in my life. When I think about then and now, it’s hard to know where to start. I was in a wheelchair then. It was hard to reclaim my independence after all that time, but once I did, I embraced it. My life is about school, studying and work now – maybe a movie if I can fit it in! Life without the House would’ve been drastically different for all of us. It would’ve been a lot rougher. Having my family with me meant everything. And having the kind of support that the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House gives, well, it’s made me a better person. Today I am more warmhearted toward people. I’m more empathetic because that’s what I learned from some of the kindest people in the world. pat i e n t : David Farmer at o u r ho u s e : September 1997 - January, 1999 h i s h o m e : Kennesaw, Georgia pg. pg. “It was such a kind place. And cheerful! You might not think of a place like that as being happy, but it is. We really bonded with the House managers who all gave us such support the whole time.” DAVID¾ FARMER Stayed at the House while being treated for childhood leukemia Staff and volunteers at the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses work diligently to ensure it is an environment that fosters optimism for families, buoying them through their hardest moments. Beautiful landscaping, natural light and views to the outside world contribute to the healing process. A hug at the door, a listening ear and someone to rejoice with when good news finally arrives can help a lot, too. pg. 6 pg. I was caught in a whirlwind. Twice. I was the new mother of a beautiful baby girl who was dying because her liver wasn’t functioning. When Lily was 54 days old, she underwent a liver transplant in Atlanta and we became very grateful for the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House. Then it happened again. Four years after Lily, I was the new mother of a beautiful baby boy who appeared perfect in every way. In fact, doctors first thought he was free of the genetic defect that had threatened Lily. But he wasn’t. It was the same awful whirlwind again. When he was 10 days old, Sawyer became the youngest-ever successful pg. 8 liver transplant patient in the world, and once again, we let the House envelope us and become our “home away from home.” I don’t know what our family would have done without the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House. It was the hugest help and blessing for our family. It was our refuge. If there was not an Atlanta Ronald McDonald House, thousands of families would be without a place to stay where they could be with their sick children. When your child is that sick, the last place you want to be is away. The House afforded us the opportunity for at least one parent to always be by their sides. pg. Today I am thankful and full of hope. Today, I am the mother of two very happy, fun-loving and compassionate kids. I am blessed, proud, amazed and so very thankful. Lily is almost 14. She takes ballroom dancing. She loves to draw and read; she writes beautifully and sings like an angel. She wants to be a cardiologist one day. His room is a matrix of construction that we’ve dubbed “LEGO City,” and his dream is to be an engineer one day. They laugh and tumble and love to jump on the trampoline and play with their friends. Lily is the consummate big sister to her little brother whose health is still vulnerable. Both have warm, tender hearts and they really worry about other children who are sick or sad. Sawyer is the fastest runner I’ve met! This nine-year-old can beat you in a 50- These days we all have perspective and yard dash when he’s not drawing one of not one of us takes one single day for his inventions like the “flying surfboard.” granted. We’ve learned that life is meant to be cherished. patie n ts : Lily & Sawyer Spadgenske at our ho us e : January 1996 - July 2 0 0 8 hi s h o me : Helena, Alabama pg. 0 pg. For the nearly 2,000 families we’ve served in the last year, that’s a savings of close to $2 million.* 430 352 10 ’99 ’04 ’08 *Based on average 2009 published rates at hotels within a six-mile radius of children’s hospitals in Atlanta. NUMBER OF BEDROOMS As of 2008 : 61 As the need grows, so do the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses. We opened our first House on Houston Mill Road in 1979, offering just eight bedrooms. In 1994, we added 11 bedrooms when our second House on Peachtree Dunwoody Road opened. In 2008, the original House was replaced with a sophisticated 50-room, LEED® certified, $15.7 million facility. To date, the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses have been able to help more than 35,000 families. FAMILY CONTRIBUTION $20/night The Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses provide a safe haven that allows parents to focus on their child’s recovery. While at the House, families are asked to make a $20 per night contribution, which amounts to about one third of the actual cost to house a family per night. No family is ever turned away for financial reasons, which makes donations and volunteerism critical to our mission. pg. I was so weak. The doctors told us that I needed a new heart. My family lives in Venezuela, so traveling to Atlanta was a very long trip. But after many doctors in many places told us this was the best place for me, we came. And we waited. But the problem got worse, so I was put at the top of the list. I was so weak, I could barely stand up and walk, but I refused a wheelchair. I preferred to walk holding onto my mother and father. pg. We were all scared and a long way from home, but the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House helped us so much. It was like a home, not a hotel where we would’ve been alone. There were also other families we could talk to and share with. Pi cture to be taken 10/1/09 Fi nal copy to come... On September 3, 2001 the hospital called. There was a heart for me. Everyone at the House was so happy for us. pg. Today I am healthy. Eight years later, I am healthy. I come back to Atlanta twice a year now for check ups, and every time, we stay at the House. It’s like our family. We feel very connected to the people here. They help us so much and are all so good to us. It would’ve been very different for us if we had not had the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House to come to. Today, I am 20 years old and studying to be a computer scientist. I program computers and would like to one day work for a big company or even create my own. I study a lot and work very hard. When I’m not busy with school, I like to hang out outside and just be a regular person. If I could talk to people who do not know about the House or who have never been through what my family and I have been through, I would tell them it is a wonderful place, that it’s a place they can come to any time. It’s a home for a family. pat i e n t : Diego Villasmil at o u r ho u s e : April 2001 - October, 2009 hi s ho m e : Zulia, Venezuela pg. 6 pg. “If there were not an Atlanta Ronald McDonald House, thousands of families would be without a place to stay with their sick children. While at the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses, families are asked to make a $2o per night contribution, which amounts to about one third of the actual cost to cover operating expenses. No family is ever turned away for financial reasons, which makes donations and volunteerism so critical to our mission. pg. 8 pg. Today, our child has a second chance. Meet Mason. Born in October 2008, Mason has spent much of his young life fighting to see his first birthday and literally stopped breathing nine times – six of those in one night, recounts his mom, Jessica Ring. Doctors call this tiny patient a miracle and marvel at his strength. Today, Mason is on the verge of walking like other babies his age and is keeping his mom and dad busy with normal oneyear-old antics. Doctors determined Mason needed a new heart, so the waiting began. The Rings, who live near Milledgeville, Georgia, return to Atlanta twice a month for checkups and treatment. Each time, they stay in their “home away from home” and remember the comfort the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House brought them during their darkest moments. “We checked into the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House, and I don’t know what we’d have done without it. This became our family. It was our home away from home,” Jessica said. The call came in the middle of the night in late February and Mason was rushed to surgery. pg. pat i e n t : Mason Ring at our h o u s e:February - June, 2009 his h o m e:Toomsboro, Georgia pg. Today I am 30 and serve nearly 2,000 families each year. I am the House built by many hands, occupied and cherished by thousands. I am brick and mortar, yes. But I am more. More than walls and halls and bedrooms and stairs, I am a warm dinner at the end of a trying day. I am a cuddle on a couch, a lullaby, a nighttime story. I am restful sleep with dreams of a morning that might just bring a rainbow. From the beginning, the need was great, and our community responded. From eight bedrooms in 1979 to 61 in 2009, the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses have grown exponentially. But so has the need. And because the need will continue to grow, so must we. When we opened our 50-room, LEED® certified facility on Gatewood Road, near Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta pg. at Egleston in June 2008, we celebrated its ability to serve transplant patients, its beauty, efficiency, and its $16.2 million testament to the generosity and compassion of a community. But in the end, we celebrated because it represents one crucial thing: We can help more. Today the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses stand ready to give more families more hope, and we look to you to help us tell tomorrow’s story. pg. Dear Friends and Donors, In 2008, the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Houses increased capacity by 300% in our continuing efforts to provide a safe haven for families of children receiving specialized medical treatment at Atlanta-area hospitals. Between our two local Houses – one located on Gatewood Road near Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and the other located on Peachtree Dunwoody Road near Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite there are now 61 bedrooms, including 10 two-bedroom suites which can accommodate families of children who have received heart, liver, kidney and bone and marrow transplants. Thanks to the dedication of our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers we were able to open our doors and hearts to nearly 1,250 families last year. Some stayed for one night, while others stayed for months at a time. And we are anticipating serving as many as 3,000 families annually in the coming years. We are very grateful to you for being among the community of generous individuals, corporations, organizations and foundations who demonstrated support of our mission of providing comfortable, temporary housing and emotional support to families whose children are receiving life-saving medical treatment. Thank you for being beacons of hope and for bringing comfort into the lives of so many deserving families. pg. 2 Linda M.
