Travel with the FIgge to Spain
September 14-24, 2014
Join Figge members on a 10 day trip across Spain this fall! We will begin in Barcelona
and travel on to Madrid, Seville and Granada to see the great masterpieces of Spanish
art from Velazquez to Picasso, explore the rich history of its cathedrals, palaces and
mosques, and savor the food, wine and landscape of this beautiful country. The tour
includes transportation, hotels and guided visits to major landmarks, with free time
for exploring, shopping, dining and simply soaking in the ambience.
Figge Executive Director Tim Schiffer and Trustee Wynne Schafer will be your hosts
for the trip.
Trip Itinerary
La Sagrada Familia Cathedral
Mezquita
Alcazar Real
Barcelona • We begin our stay in this
vibrant city with a guided tour of La
Sagrada Familia Cathedral, Gaudi’s
masterpiece. We will also tour the Picasso
Museum, which houses many of the artist’s
early works, and will visit Gaudi’s Casa Mila
apartment building and his Casa Battlo, a
private house turned museum. Optional
evening walk to Gaudi’s fantastic Park Guell,
with spectacular views of the city. Two
nights at the Avenida Palace Hotel.
Madrid • Traveling to the capital city of
Madrid by train, we will tour the Reina
Sofia Museum, home to Picasso’s Guernica,
painted in response to the bombing of a
village in the Spanish Civil War. A guided
tour will take us to the Prado Museum to
see masterpieces by Goya, Velasquez and
many others, and to the baroque Royal
Palace, home of Phillip V. Two nights at the
Husa Princesa Hotel.
Cordoba • En route from Madrid, we will
stop in this ancient city for lunch and a
guided tour of the Mezquita, a mosquecathedral dating from the 8th to the
16th century.
Seville • A half-day tour of the city will take
us to the Alcazar Real, where Queen Isabella
gave Columbus her permission to set off for
the new world, the 16th century Cathedral
and the 12th century Giralda Tower. The old
town offers narrow streets lined with flowers
and fruit trees, and the contemporary
“Metropol Parasol” by sculptor Jurgen Mayer
canopies the old town plaza. Two nights at
the Melia Sevilla Hotel.
Ronda • En route to Granada, we will stop
for lunch in the beautiful fortified city of
Ronda, situated at the edge of a deep gorge
with dramatic views of the surrounding
countryside.
Granada • We will tour the Alhambra
and Generalife, a UNESCO world heritage
site that was the palace and fort of the
last Moorish rulers of Spain before they
were conquered in 1492. We will see the
cathedral where Ferdinand and Isabella are
buried, and will have time to explore the
old city before a farewell tapas dinner. Two
nights at the Melia Hotel.
Malaga • Our final night will be spent in the
seaside town of Malaga, our departure point
for Chicago on September 24.
