LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear Members,
This summer at your Museum, we peer back into
the history of ancient Rome, viewed through the
artifacts of leisure and luxury that are all that remain
of the villas of Oplontis near Pompeii. Buried
under 50-feet of ash after the ruinous eruption of
Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, the villas have recently
revealed the culture and lifestyles of some of
Rome’s wealthiest citizens, and their slaves. Only
three museums in the United States will host this
exhibit of ancient artifacts that have never left Italy before – and MOR,
your Museum, is one. Along with this stirring exhibition, MOR is creating
programming for families and curriculum for students to engage, enrich
and inspire young and old from across Montana and beyond. Of course,
summers are always filled with fun and excitement here at Museum of the
Rockies. From new events at the Living History Farm to new shows at the
Taylor Planetarium, you won’t want to miss a moment. I hope to see you
here soon.
Sincerely,
Shelley McKamey
Executive Director

Our search for the lost continent of Atlantis takes us on a journey
through the astronomical knowledge and understanding of the
ancient Greeks. How did the constellations get their names? What
different patterns did ancient cultures see in the sky? Was Atlantis
a real place? Did it really sink into the sea? We will uncover clues
to help us solve this age-old mystery. Narrated by Terry O’Quinn.

Leisure & Luxury in the Age of Nero
The Villas of Oplontis
This exhibition is organized and circulated by The University of Michigan Kelsey Museum of Archeology in
cooperation with the Ministero dei Beni e delle Attivitá Culturali e del Turismo and the Soprintendenza Speciale per
i Beni Archeologici di Pompei, Ercolano e Stabia.
Near Pompeii
Presented by:
Saturday, June 18 – Saturday, December 31, 2016
More than 2,000 years ago, many of Rome’s wealthiest citizens
lived and played on the shores of the Bay of Naples at Pompeii
and in luxury villas nearby at Oplontis. One of the most opulent
of these villas was rumored to be the summer home of Emperor
Nero’s second wife, Poppaea.
In 79 AD, falling ash and pyroclastic flows from Mount Vesuvius’
catastrophic eruption buried dining rooms that had once seated
more than a hundred people, private chambers adorned with
spectacular frescos, and marble columns resting on mosaic
floors. Preserved next door were wine and oil-filled amphorae,
a strong-box with coins, and people hiding in a barrel-vaulted
storage room, waiting for a rescue that never came.
Dr. Regina Gee, Associate Professor of Art History at Montana
State University and Adjunct Curator of Art History at MOR, is
an expert on frescos and one of three researchers working on
the archaeological excavation of Oplontis. Not long ago, she
and her research colleagues received permission from the
Superintenza to organize an exhibit of artifacts from the site to
travel to the United States.
Now Museum of the Rockies is one of only three museums
in the U.S. to host this stirring exhibit of antiquities that have
never left Italy before. Join us, and experience for yourself the
artifacts of leisure and luxury that are all that remain of Oplontis.

Montana is currently the top barley producing state in the USA
and we are proud of our product! Join us for a discussion of this
ancient brewing ingredient with Montana State University’s Barley

June 28: The Bitter in Your Beer: Hops and Brewing
featuring MAP Brewing Company
Hops have been an important ingredient in beer for centuries
and today they are perhaps more popular than ever before.
Whether adding a floral punch or preserving beer itself, hops
are a key ingredient for Montana beers. Until recently, hops were
not grown on a commercial scale in our state. Join Tom Britz of
Whitefish, MT to learn how Glacier Hops Ranch is bringing hops
production back to Big Sky Country!
July 26th: The Heat is ON: Malting in Montana
featuring Bridger Brewing Company
Celebrate wheat beers, their origins and their future. From
delicate Pilsners to hefty Stouts, beer and ale drinkers can all
appreciate a well malted grain bill in their glasses. This month,
we will look at the history and process of malting grains and how
today’s craft (and industrial) brewers use this ancient method of
bringing out the best in barleys and other grains. Dr. Tom Blake,
Professor Emeritus, Plant Breeding and Genetics, and former
Director of the MSU Barley Breeding Project for more than 30
years, will share how Western Feedstock Technologies Inc.
makes malt as Big Sky Malts and builds the Montana Malters
line of small malting systems.
August 30th: The Magic Ingredient: Yeast
featuring Madison River Brewing Company
For centuries brewers relied on a mystical process to turn a
mixture of grains and herbs into beer and ale. As science and
technology developed in the brewer’s profession, yeast was
found to be at the bottom of this process and the propagation
of specific yeast varieties became an international obsession.
From making bread to brewing the finest beers, yeast is at the
heart of the process.

season celebration of the Hops & History program. Featuring Montana’s brewery history
expert, Steve Lozar, this event includes beer tasting from local breweries and a keynote
lecture on the history of brewing in Montana. Food will be available for purchase from
local food trucks. Join us before the Hops & History Season Celebration at the Living
History Farm for the final harvest of the summer.

6pm | Hager Auditorium | Free to the public | Jennifer Hill
Childbirth at the Turn of the Century
Thursday, July 21
Learn what it was like to be pregnant and give birth in Montana at the turn of the
century. We’ll investigate the Tinsley family’s living and working spaces as we
explore the reproductive experiences of women in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The Realities of Reproduction
Thursday, August 18
Using the Tinsley family’s history as a guide, we will look at the ways pregnancy,
childbirth, and delivery complications affected residents of Montana and the West
some 100 years ago. In a time of high infant mortality, the Tinsley children all lived
to adulthood - a rare occurrence worthy of attention.
