Term 1 ǀ Week 9
Please note: Wairoa College Swimming Sports
have been rescheduled, date to be confirmed.
Dear parents and caregivers
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou
It has been an incredibly busy week here with
some amazing things happening. Mr Hamblyn
attended our Service Academy’s passing out
parade at Waiouru. He said it made him very
proud of our tamariki and of the College. I would
like to acknowledge Brent Mokomokos hard work.
He has built our academy up and insisted on high
standards. Kia ora koe Brent! This military
tradition has a lot to offer our students in terms of
discipline, character building and personal mana.
My two brothers were both military men - one in
the NZRAF and one was in the Navy so I really
respect this tradition as I know it has a lot to offer
young people who want order and a purpose in
their lives. A big thank you to all these students for
the work that they have put in at Waiouru.
We have also had an assembly at which we
celebrated some outstanding sports prowess. A
special thanks to these young athletes for bringing
mana to our school. Toby Taylor gave the school
a wonderfully animated account of what these
young sportsmen and women had achieved.
The key emphasis was on success but I did
reiterate our message that there will be NO
THREATS, NO VIOLENCE and NO DRUGS at our
kura.
We have boys going to Waka Ama which is terrific.
We had a BOT meeting on the 20 March and there
is another tonight at 5.30pm (28 March). Our BOT
are terribly hard working people and our BOT
meetings are very thorough. On Wednesday and
Thursday (5th & 6th April) there are some sessions
on NCEA run by Rose Clarke.
We have our Japanese manuhiri here. It will be an
honour to join them for dinner on Thursday night
and again with the Mayor on Friday night. Thank
you Trevor Galvan for all your hard work in
promoting a terrific programme for our guests.
Nga mihi ki a koe Trevor.
This is a terrific place. I am enjoying Wairoa and
really totally like the students. They are honest
open rural kids. Brilliant! He rau aroha ki a
koutou! Thanks for being so friendly and I look
forward to working with you. I said to the staff that
we must all heed the words of Canon Wi Huata
song - TUTIRA MAI – stand together, be collegial,
be orderly. There is also the line. “Whaia te
maramatanga”. Pursue knowledge and wisdom.
Its good advice. It lifts people to new levels.
Noho ora mai

Service Academy Induction
Kia ora Whanau
20 students had been selected to attend the Central Region Services Academies, Induction course held at
Waiouru Military Camp, conducted by the Youth Life Skills of the New Zealand Defence Force over the
period 13-24 of March 2017.
The Aim was to introduce the students to the ethos and values of the Academy through a Military style
methodology that promotes and fosters teamwork, to set in place the foundation for continued training,
education and personal development throughout the remainder of the Academy year.
Hello my name is Marilyn Haliburton.
The experience at the Waiouru Military camp was enjoyable, challenging and hard working. The induction
course involved working as a team, discipline, maintaining health and hygiene, leadership tasks, leaderless
tasks, team building, group dynamics, drill, time management, and fitness programmes.
During the induction course I had countless opportunities to use, develop and improve my leadership
skills. As soon as our Academy got to Waiouru, it was intense. We instantly had to work as a team together
as an academy and with Trident High School within our platoon. We shared the barracks with Trident and
did all of our activities throughout the whole two weeks with Trident. This gave us the opportunity to bond
and make new friends, which we all did.
For my personal experience I really enjoyed going and have come back with more knowledge, experience,
leadership skills and a pathway for my career. I’ve bonded and made new friends from Trident High School
and also the Staff that looked after us during the induction course. I’ve become closer with everyone in my
academy and would recommend anyone to join especially if you’re looking to join the NZDF.
Here is a snap shoot of what the Students got out of the New Zealand Defence Force Induction course
2017
Kiwi Tipoki: While being on this course I gained a lot of relevant skills towards my future career. I was
introduced to the military core values Courage, Commitment, Comradeship and Integrity. I believe
producing these values were evident towards me being awarded top student. Goals were set and also
achieved this was the factor of my high morel performance. Overall this course affected me in a positive
manner and I support it 100% including my Services Academy Director.
Gabriel De La Haye: I had an amazing experience at Waiouru and it gave me a sense of purpose and gave
structure to my life for the first time ever. I learned to master my self-discipline and attitude and I am
excited to go back next year.
Te-Rina Wilson: As this was my second year at the Waiouru Induction course, this time as a year 13 doing
Level 3, I have gained a lot of leadership skills and more confidence in myself and towards others. I had the
opportunity to experience how the defence forces live, eat and train.
Hayley Reedy: I’ve gained better time management, team work and leadership skills from the Waiouru
Induction course. The staff were helpful and firm, pushed me to do my best especially for RFL, cross
country and team activities. I made new friends formed a greater bond with my Academy and had a good
experience of the force life. I would recommend it to upcoming year 12 students to give it a go.

New Home Liaison Officer
We welcome Joe Taipete to our staff. Joe is no stranger to many in
Wairoa as he has lived here for most of his life. He moved away to
Christchurch and has been an important part of the rebuild programme
there.
He is pleased to be back in Wairoa to support the tamariki and their
whanau in their learning.
His title is “Home Liaison Officer”. This involves making contact with
caregivers of students who are late to school, absent from school and
helping staff monitor the movement of students in and around the school.
He will be working with families to support them and the school in the
learning efforts of students. We know our community will welcome Joe
and support him with his efforts.
Teacher Only Day - Friday 7 April
Wairoa College is having a teacher only day. There will be no classes on the 7th April, no Day 0 but the
EIT and AUT Sport courses will precede as normal.
The college is pleased to have a visit by Jack Boyle the President of NZPPTA. The Acting Principal
Lisl Prendergast has invited him in as the College is conducting a SWOT review. This looks at
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats and is a tool to review all the processes and
procedures that the College has. The College will also be inviting community input later.
