Baseball team wins Dixie Tournament
Ranked second in the South
and eighth in the nation, Wesleyan
had one game before they started
the Dixie Conference Tournament
and defeated Mary Washington
6-5.
In the second inning the Bish­
ops got on boaid with a single by
B aiiy Blake and then Jerem y
Stewart singled in two runs in the
third inning. The Bishops had a
big sixth inning as they scored
three runs to give freshman Ryan
Cramer his first win o f the sea­
son.
In the opening round o f the
DIAC Tournament, the Bishops
fell behind 9-2 to G reensboro
early in the game, but battled back
to within one run before falling
to the Pride 11-9.

The Bishops never could tie
the gaine as they stranded six run­
ners in the last three innings.
“We had several opportunities
to tie or take the lead but we just
couldn’t produce the one big hit
we needed,” noted coach Charlie
Long.
The B ishops had lost two
games to Methodist the week be­
fore, but were ready for the Monarchs this time as Sean Fleming
struck out seven in relief as he
picked up a huge win, 11-8.
A game that went back and
forth, the Bishops took the lead
for good in the sixth inning on
D av id C a p o b ia n c o ’s tw o-run
triple. Scott Robeson and Jeremy
Stewart each got three hits for the
game, as Wesleyan out-hit the
Monarchs 15-12.
“Sean was outstanding,” noted
Long, as he improved to 7-0 on
the season. The Bishops trailed
Christopher Newport 4-1, when
the bats awoke in the fifth inning
as David Capobianco and Scott
R o beson h o m ered to give
Wesleyan a 5-4 lead.
C apobianco added another
homer in the sixth as the Bishops
pushed across four more runs on
the way to a 9-7 win.
Jim Pitney pitched well to earn
his fifth win of the season.
In the next gam e against
Ferrum, Jon Rardin struck out 11
over eight innings of work to pick
up his sixth win o f the season as
the Bishops prevailed 9-2.

Lady Bishops win tournament
The Lady B ishops, ranked
third in the east and 20th in the
natin with a 24-13 record, had to
make up a pair o f games against
the Hornets of Shenandoah be­
fore they got down to business in
the Dixie Conference Tournament
and took a pair o f wins by a com ­
bined score o f 41-3.

well and Mayflower had a huge

nior shortstop from Salisbury,
Md., L ivezey led the Bishops with
a .427 batting average, w hich is
also fourth best in the D ix ie.
L ivezey w as second in the D ixie
with 17 doubles and fourth with a

• Catcher, M ayflour Sours. A
junior catcher from Richmond,
Va., Sours batted .354 and was
fourth in the D ixie with a .490 on
base percentage and 19 walks.

nior pitcher from Milford, Conn.,
C oull has posted a 2.51 ERA,'
which is sixth best in the D ixie!
She posted nine victories and
struck out 45 batters. C oull also
led the D ix ie with 21 walks at the
plate.

30-7. Mayflower Sours hit a grand
slam in the second game, while
driving in seven runs for the
game. Jill Livezey and Tabitha
W ilcox each had five R B I’s.
Kristy Coull and Candice Hall
each picked up a win.

DIAC Tournament saw the Bish­
ops defeat Fernim 6-1, as Candice
Hall improved to 11-2 on the sea­
son by going the distance, strik­
ing out five and holding the Pan­
thers to five hits.
Four players had multiple hits
as Wesleyan broke open a 1-1

Blake led the olTcnsc with three
hits each as the Bishops out-hit
the Panthers 15-5.
The Championship game pit­
ted Wesleyan against Methodist.
With each team having one loss
in the tournament, it was "winner
take all,” as the victor became
the Dixie Tournament Champion.
Buddy Hernandez went the
distance for the Bishops as he
struck out 16, leading the Bish­
ops to a 13-3 victory.
Jeremy Stewan led the Bish­
ops, going 3-5, with a homerun
and two R B I’s. The B ishops
notched 19 hits while Hernandez
held the Monarchs to six hits.
“The team responded well af­
ter losing the first game of the
toumey,” remarked Long. "The
seniors would not be denied.” Jer­
emy Stewart was named the Dixie

Player, as David Capobianco.
Barry Blake and Buddy H er­
nandez were also named to the
All-Toumament Team.
The Bishops opened the week
with a 3-2 win over the Braves of
Chowan as Andy Jones started
the scoring with a fourth inning
solo homerun.

hit that drove in Barry Blake to
give the Bishops the lead in the
eighth inning that proved to be
the difference in the game. Jason
Sigley, 6-1, threw eight innings,
striking out five, and Andrew
McFarland earned his first save.

The Bishops bounced back the
next day as they defeated Emory
4-1 with Jon Rardin getting his
seventh win of the season. Rardin
scattered seven hits and struck out
14. while going the distance.
With the Bishops up 2-1 in the
bottom o f the eighth. Barry Blake
Mailed a two-out rally by dou­
bling down the right field line.
Nick Buonocore then hit a double
to the lettcenterfield gap to sive
the Bishops a two-run cushion
Dan Salay then got an inrieid
single that scored Buonocorc (roin

runs they would need.
