Saint of the Week www.olpmarshfield.com St. John Nepomucene Born at Nepomuk in Bohemia in 1330, John was the preacher of King Wenceslaus IV and confessor of his queen, Joanna of Bavaria. He died in 1383, thrown into the Vltava River on the orders of the king for refusing to reveal the queen’s confession (Wenceslaus suspected she was guilty of infidelity). He is depicted in a cassock and may bear the palm and five stars. He is invoked against the dangers of rivers and the sea, to obtain rain, and against slander. St. John is protector of seafarers, canons, the slandered, officials in charge of a diocesan curia, good fame, and bridges. John is from a Hebrew name meaning “Yahweh is gracious.” ** Taken from Saints– A Year in Faith and Art by Rosa Giorgi Please pray for the Church in our Diocese Heavenly Father, Bless your Church with an abundance of holy and zealous priests, deacons, brothers, and sisters. Give those you have called to the married state and those you have chosen to live as single persons in the world, the special graces that their lives require. Form us all in the likeness of your Son, so that in Him, with Him, and through Him, we may love you more deeply and serve you more faithfully, always and everywhere. With Mary we ask this through Christ our Lord. This week we pray especially for: Steven Weller of St. Florian Parish of Hatley, WI College IV St. John Vianney Seminary Prayer Intention of the Week: For families that are divided, that the Lord may draw them to his truth and to accept the March 19, 2017 demands of the Gospel Third Sunday of Lent 2 Welcome to Our Lady of Peace Parish · Marshfield From Fr. Rajan HAPPY FEAST TO ALL! Pope Francis has a coat of arms which incorporates a flower used to symbolize St. Joseph. He chose March 19th, the Feast of St. Joseph, as the date for his Papal inaugural Mass. In his homily he referred to Joseph as a "strong and courageous man, a working man, yet in his heart we see great tenderness, which is not the virtue of the weak, but rather a sign of strength of spirit and a capacity for concern, for compassion, for genuine openness to others, for love." Recently, a Decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments was issued mandating the insertion of the name of St. Joseph in the Prayer offered by every Catholic priest in the world when they offer Eucharistic Prayers II, III, and IV during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Pope Francis follows in the footsteps of his predecessors of blessed memory in commending of St. Joseph as a model to the faithful in this hour. Let us consider together what the biblical texts tell us about St, Joseph. Though there are not many words, they have profound meaning for all of us as we seek to live a life of holiness, no matter what our state in life or vocation. They are of particular importance for men, but certainly apply to all men and women. In the infancy narrative offered to us by the Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, we find a unique focus on Joseph, the Husband of Mary. After tracing the lineage of the Savior from the perspective of Joseph, (Matt. 1: 1-7) we are introduced to Joseph's response to God's invitation. This was Joseph's Annunciation. Too often we forget that an angel also appeared to Joseph, to prepare him for the significant role He would play in God's saving plan for the whole human race. He was invited to exercise his human freedom, to give his assent to the Lord's invitation - and he did. His manly response to God reminds all men that actions speak louder than words. In 2005, Joseph Ratzinger, spoke some inspiring words concerning the silence of his namesake "His is a silence permeated by contemplation of the mystery of God, in an attitude of total availability to his divine wishes. Let us allow ourselves to be "infected" by the silence of St Joseph! We have much need of it in a world which is often too noisy, which does not encourage reflection and listening to the voice of God." (Pope Benedict XVI, December 18, 2005) Several years ago, in prayer, I (Pope Benedict ) was prompted to write these words concerning the silence of Joseph: The Silence of Joseph echoes in a world of noise turning a cacophony of self love into a melody of self surrender. The silence of Joseph is a seed which bears the fruit of holiness and courage. The silence of Joseph drowns the din of sorrow and silences the wailing of the weak The silence of Joseph draws the world to a cave in Bethlehem where God is born as man and man is born again The silence of Joseph draws us to our knees in worship of the Word made flesh in whose presence all words of men lose their meaning The silence of Joseph directs a symphony of silence which stills the universe in adoration of the One in Whom the New creation has come. Let us join our silence to the Silence of Joseph. Happy feast to all. God Bless. TAKING HOLY COMMUNION HOME Many parishioners have the privilege of taking Holy Communion home to loved ones who are unable to come to Mass. Please remember two things, —anyone wanting to do this needs to be properly trained, and the pyx should never, ever be put in your pocket. Instead it should be carried in a pouch around your neck. Thanks to the kindness of one of our parishioners, we have a good supply of these pouches in the sacristy. Please come to the Sacristy and take one. This is the reverent and proper way to carry our Lord to our parishioners who desire Jesus so Father Eric Berns, Pastor 715-384-9414 Rectory 1414 W. 5th St. 715-384-9414 [email protected] Kara McManus, Business Manager [email protected] Parish Office 510 South Columbus Avenue 715-384-9414 Corinne Johnson, Religious Education Director [email protected] [email protected] Janet Orella, Bulletin Editor [email protected] Sister Virdean Meyer, RCIA/Adult Education/Liturgy [email protected] 715-384-3044 Communion to the Homebound Pauline Hebert & Debbie Hebert 715-305-5222 Prayer Chain Jane Anderson 715-207-0477 [email protected] Parish Office Hours Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:00 pm Admin. We are in need of volunteers for the last three weeks of Lent. RETREAT, REST, RENEW AT ST. ANTHONY'S! TUITION AFFORDABILITY An education at CCS has many facets: academic, social, athletic, and, of course, spiritual. We teach more than just the facts and skills that will help students succeed in the best of times, we share with them the faith and values that will help get them through the worst of times. If you’d like to send your child to our schools but are concerned about tuition costs, Columbus President David Eaton wants you to know that we are committed to helping all families send their children to CCS regardless of their ability to pay. Our tuition assistance program awarded over $160,000 this school year to our families. We also participate in the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (WPCP). Through the WPCP 54 students were able to attend CCS tuition free this year. The application period for the Parental Choice program runs until April 20th. We encourage you to contact Mr. Eaton at 715-3871177 with any questions on how to apply for the Choice program or for Columbus tuition assistance. Located on 40 acres in Central Wisconsin, the historical St. Anthony Spirituality Center is the ideal location for a private retreat of any duration, to attend a spiritually nourishing weekend program on a variety of topics, or to just come for a day away from the ordinary. Go online to www.sarcenter.com to see all upcoming retreats or call 715-443-2236 for more info. Advertiser of the Week Merkel Company INC. 1111 W. Veterans Pkwy.
